Sports Medicine
The Middlebury College Sports Medicine Department delivers traditional athletic training and sports
medicine services to the student-athletes at the College.
David Matthews is the Director of Sports Medicine, with support from athletic trainers Kelly Cray, Rachel
Eldredge, Emily Mathews and physical therapist Sue Murphy. The team physician is Dr. Mark Peluso, with
orthopedic consultant Dr. Ben Rosenberg.
Opened in January of 1999, the state-of-the-art facility covers 3,500 square feet. Contained in the building
are isokinetic multi-joint testing equipment, five electrical stimulation and ultrasound machines and numerous
pieces of rehabilitation equipment for both closed-chained and open-chained rehabilitation.
The services to be delivered can be broken down into three primary types: injury prevention (taping, bracing,
padding, orthotics construction), management of
athletic injuries and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
In addition, whenever possible, the department
strives to integrate education about athletic injuries
so that the student-athletes can be empowered to
lead healthier, injury-free lifestyles. They are committed
to using whatever technology is available and
affordable in the delivery of these services.
The underlying philosophy for the Middlebury
College Sports Medicine Department is that the
needs of the patient shall always be the first consideration
for all members of the department staff.
Furthermore, the athletic trainer(s) who will be
providing these services will maintain the highest
standards of quality consistent with the National
Athletic Trainers Association, Inc. Code of Professional
Practice and the credentialing statues of
this state.
2010 Middlebury College Preview
Middlebury will hope to maintain its offensive prowess in
2010, after leading the league a year ago in total offense (450.5
yards/game) and scoring offense (29.9 points/game). The
Panthers got off to a rough start last season, closing the year
with four straight victories to finish with a 5-3 mark overall. Ten
starters were lost to graduation, including the school’s fourth
all-time leading tackler Eric Kamback, who led the league a year
ago with 103 stops. Other key losses included Erik Rostad (444
yards total offense, 12 touchdowns), three-time All-NESCAC
specialist James Millard (3,333 career all-purpose yards), and
All-NESCAC offensive lineman Paul Bennett.
“This is the most competition we have at several positions
in a long time,” said head coach Bob Ritter, who is now in his
10th season at the helm. “I hope this will continue to raise our
level of competition and we can hit the ground running as the
season begins.”
NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year Donald McKillop
returns for his senior season to lead a passing offense that
ranked third in the nation a year ago. McKillop led the league
in attempts, completions, passing yards, touchdowns and pass
efficiency a year ago. His top two targets were lost to graduation,
with tight end David Reed and receiver Matt Rayner leading the
returners. Aside from McKillop’s yards on the ground, just 78
of the team’s 616 rushing yards return from a year ago, with a
host of young players vying for carries.
Defensively, the Panthers boasted the NESCAC’s third-best
passing defense (208.1 yards/game) in 2009. Middlebury was in
the middle of the pack in scoring defense and will have some
key holes to fill this season.
“We have a very large and experienced senior class who
knows how to win,” added Ritter. “I’m looking to build on our
solid finish last season and get off to a great start in 2010.”
Middlebury opens its eight-game NESCAC schedule
on September 25 at
home vs. Wesleyan.
The Panthers will
also host Amherst,
Bates and Tufts,
while visiting Colby,
Williams, Trinity and
Hamilton.
Senior Donald McKillop (T. Campbell).
Quarterbacks
McKillop returns as
the team’s starter for
the fourth straight
season owning 13 of
the school’s 14 alltime
passing records
entering his final year.
A year ago, the cocaptain
went 262-405
(.647) for 2,873 yards
with 22 touchdown
passes and a leagueleading
136.77 efficiency
rating. He
led the nation with
32.8 completions/
game last year, while
ranking second with
359 passing yards/
game.
B a c k i n g u p
McKillop will be senior
Jack Kramer,
who filled in admirably
for McKillop in
the final two games
of the ’08 season
with a pair of wins.
Running Backs
Several players
will look for carries
this season, after
Rostad carried the
majority of the load a
year ago. Junior Phillip
Cutler (9 rushes,
37 yards) and sopho- Senior David Reed (T. Campbell).
more Remi Ashkar (3 rushes, 13 yards) will compete for a starting
role. Senior Andrew Plumley (14 rushes, 32 yards), will also
challenge for the spot after missing several games a year ago.
Receivers/Tight Ends
Junior Matt Rayner (35 rec., 331 yards) started at times last
season and returns with the most experience in the group. He
averaged 9.5 yards/catch last season, scoring five touchdowns.
Junior Alex Englert (11 rec., 111 yards, TD) and sophomore
Zach Driscoll (8 rec., 78 yards, TD) both saw quality time at
wide-out a year ago and will compete for a starting role.
Senior tight end David Reed (40 rec., 450 yards, TD) returns
at tight end after an All-NESCAC season a year ago. He had two
100+ yard games a year ago and returns as the team’s leader in
receptions.
Offensive Line
Three members with quality game experience return from a
year ago to anchor the line. Seniors John Poulson (6-5, 265) and
Sam White (6-3, 280) return as the leaders, with quality support
from junior Ken LeStrange (6-4, 270). All three players started
at tackle at some point last season and will be expected to be in
starting roles in ’10.
Defensive Line
A good group of experienced players return to anchor
Middlebury’s defensive line. Senior Paul Carroll (26 tackles),
junior Chris Dola (21 tackles, 9.5 TFL, 4.5 sacks) and sophomore
Andrew Ackerman (8 tackles) all return with quality game
experience and will compete for time at defensive end.
Sophomore Keegan Ashley (20 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks)
and senior Carl Culicchia (26 tackles, 4.5 TFL) put up some big
numbers at defensive tackle last season and will return in start-
ing roles. Junior Patrick Downey (four tackles, 2 TFL) is also
expected to be in the mix after a solid sophomore season.
Linebackers
Seniors Andrew Durfee (46 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and Andrew
Poulin (57 tackles, 10 TFL, 2 sacks) are back as starting linebackers
to lead the group. Poulin is the team’s leading returning
tackler from ’09, while Durfee was fourth on the squad in stops
a year ago.
Juniors Matthew Cawley (3 tackles) and Zach Roeder (11
tackles) both saw action at linebacker last season and are expected
to compete for starting jobs.
Secondary
Senior co-captain Connor Green (48 tackles, 3 INT, 4
PBU’s) will lead the corners after a big season a year ago. His
three interceptions were second on the team, while he ended the
year third in tackles. Seniors Charlie Taft (19 tackles, 2 INT) and
Alex Kennedy (16 tackles, 2 INT – ’08) both have seen quality
time at corner and will battle for a starting job this season.
Junior Michael Bilodeau (45 tackles, INT) returns as the
team’s most experienced safety, finishing fifth on the squad a
The Life of a Hired Man, Steve Hauschka’s NFL Experience
- by Joe Early-
Since graduating from Middlebury in 2007, NFL placekicker Steve Hauschka travelled
thousands of miles to kick a football. It is not uncommon to find talented NFL kickers
going from team to team during their career. Now in his third season as a pro, Hauschka
suited up for Minnesota, Baltimore, Atlanta, and most recently, Detroit.
Vikings, Ravens, Falcons and Lions, oh my.
During his time at Middlebury, the All-NESCAC player wowed fans, players and
coaches on both teams with Howitzer-like kicks landing deep into the end zone. On a few
occasions, Hauschka kicked the ball through the uprights—80 yards away. Regarding his
long kick-offs, Hauschka noted, “I’ve tweaked my technique since playing at Middlebury,
but I’m still trying to do the same thing...kick the ball as high and as far as I can.”
Being on several teams over a short period of time didn’t faze Hauschka. “It’s a business
decision when teams sign or release players—and it happens all season long. No one in the
NFL should take it personally.” The life of an NFL kicker offers its own challenges. “Every
kick-off is measured for distance, direction and hang-time in games and in practice. Often
young kickers are given only a few chances to perform and they need to be perfect.”
Asked about the best part of being an NFL player, Hauschka didn’t mention the pay,
lifestyle or other perks of being a pro athlete. “It’s community service. Walking into a hospital
unit to meet sick or injured kids in my NFL jersey shows how a small act of kindness
goes a long way. It’s a powerful and moving experience.”
Just like all NFL players, Hauschka trains hard in the off-season in and out of the
weight room. “There are about 30-40 people in the world that can do what I do. Every year there are dozens more trying to
break into the NFL. I work on my strength, flexibility, endurance and fine-tune my technique on field goals and kick-offs. It’s
a job based on distance and accuracy.”
In Hauschka’s rookie year, he played for two NFL teams. In the pre-season he suited up for the Minnesota Vikings and
got plenty of work in the pre-season. “I was given a great opportunity, including making all the kicks in a game against the
[Baltimore] Ravens.” The Vikings ended up releasing Hauschka, but the Ravens felt a kick-off specialist would help their
defense and signed him for the 2008 season. “We were one game from the Super Bowl,” Hauschka reflected.
After a successful rookie campaign, Hauschka assumed both field goal and kickoff
duties in 2009. Midway through the season, the Ravens front office made
a roster decision. “I sat down with the general manager and the head coach,”
Hauschka said. “They told me I was being released. I’ve seen a number of players
come and go during the year. It’s part of the business sometimes.”
The placekicking revolving door spun Hauschka right back into the NFL after
his release. “I got a few phone calls and had a couple workouts with some teams.
Right at the end of the year the Atlanta Falcons signed me,” said Hauschka.
The Falcons kept Hauschka on their 2010 roster through the off-season before
releasing him after a pre-season
game in August. Three
days later, the Detroit Lions
called, signing Hauschka, as
veteran kicker Jason Hansen
was nursing a minor injury.
Asked how it is being the new
guy on the team Hauschka
said, “After a few days, I was
no longer a fresh face out
here, since they signed and
released a bunch of guys already.”
Hauschka, wearing his fourth
NFL jersey in the past three
seasons, made all four of his
field goal attempts and an extra
point in a 25-20 pre-season win over the Broncos in the “Mile High City.” All of his kick-offs reached the end zone. “Like
every kicker, I’m always looking for that extra 3-4 yards on my kicks. Little did I know that stepping off the plane in Denver
was the answer,” joked Hauschka.
Even though Hauschka was a perfect 4/4 on field goals and 6/6 on extra points over two games with the Lions, the
team released him on the final day of the pre-season. “It a business,” said Hauschka. “I’ve enjoyed the journey so far. I will
continue to prepare every day for my next opportunity. I can’t think of many things I’d rather be doing—I love kicking.”
That’s the life of a hired man.
Extra Credit by Rick Reilly (Sports Illustrated - 3/10/03)
-Reprinted with permission from Sports Illustrated on this, the 50th anniversary season of “Picking Up Butch.”-
The best college tradition is not dotting the i at Ohio State. It’s not stealing the goat
from Navy. Or waving the wheat at Kansas. It’s Picking Up Butch at Middlebury (Vt.)
College.
For 42 years Middlebury freshman athletes have been Picking Up Butch for football
and basketball games. It’s a sign-up sheet thing. Carry the ball bags. Gather all the towels.
Pick Up Butch.
Basketball players, men and women, do it during football season. Football players
do it during basketball season. Two hours before each home game, two freshmen grab
whatever car they can get and drive a mile off campus to the tiny house where 54-year-old
Butch Varno lives with his 73-year-old mother, Helen, who never got her driver’s license.
And they literally Pick Up Butch, 5’3” and 170 pounds, right off his bed.
They put him in his wheelchair and push him out of the house, or one guy hauls him
in a fireman’s carry. They pile him into the car, cram the wheelchair into the trunk, take him
to the game and roll him to his spot in the mezzanine for football games or at the end of the bench for basketball.
Butch always smiles and says the same thing from the bottom of his heart: “CP just sucks.” Cerebral palsy. While his
fondest dream has always been to play basketball, it’ll never happen. There is little that he can physically do for himself.
“At first, you’re a little nervous; you’re like, I don’t know,” says freshman wide receiver Ryan Armstrong. “But the older
guys say, ’We did it when we were freshmen. Now you go get him. It’s tradition.’ So me and my buddy got him the first week.
He’s pretty heavy. We bumped his head a couple of times getting him into the car. He’s like, ’Hey! Be careful!’ But he loves getting
out so much that afterward you feel good. It’s fun to put a smile like that on somebody’s face.”
And the kids don’t just Pick Up Butch. They also Keep Butch Company. Take Butch to the Bathroom. Feed Butch. “He
always likes a hot dog and a Coke,” says 6’8” Clark Read, 19, a power forward. “It’s kind of weird at first, sticking a hot dog in
his mouth. The trick is to throw out the last bite so he doesn’t get your fingers.”
Thanks to 42 years of freshmen, Butch hardly ever misses a Middlebury game. Not that he hasn’t been late.
“One day this year, the two guys were calling me on their cell,” says Armstrong, “and they’re going, ’We can’t find Butch!’
And I’m like, ’You lost Butch? How can you lose Butch?’ Turns out they just couldn’t find his house.”
Nobody at Middlebury remembers quite how Picking Up Butch got started, but Butch does. It was 1961. He was 13, and
his grandmother, a housekeeper at the dorms, wheeled him to a football game. It started snowing halfway through, and afterward
she couldn’t push him all the way back home. A student named Roger Ralph asked them if they needed a ride. Ever since then,
Butch has been buried in the middle of Middlebury sports.
Sometimes he gives the basketball team a pregame speech, which is usually, “I love you guys.” He holds the game ball
during warmups and at halftime until the refs need it. He is held upright for the national anthem. Once in a while, just before
tip-off, they put him in the middle of the players’ huddle, where they all touch his head and holler, “One, two, three, together!”
When the action gets tense, the freshmen hold his hands to keep them from flailing. After the games some of the players come
back to the court and help him shuffle a few steps for exercise, until he collapses back in his chair, exhausted. Then it’s home
again, Butch chirping all the way.
And it’s not just the athletes at Middlebury who attend to him. Butch is a campus project. Students come by the house
and help him nearly every day. Over the years they taught him to read, and then last year they helped him get his GED. Somebody
got him a graduation cap and gown to wear at the party
they threw in his honor. During his thank-you speech,
Butch wept.
“These kids care what happens to me,” Butch
says. “They don’t have to, but they do. I don’t know
where I’d be without them. Probably in an institution.”
But that’s not the question. The question is,
Where would they be without Butch?
“It makes you think,” says Armstrong. “We’re
all young athletes. Going to a game or playing in a game,
we take it for granted. But then you go Pick Up Butch,
and I don’t know, it makes you feel blessed.”
Now comes the worst time of the year--the
months between the end of the basketball season, last
week, and the start of football in August. “It stinks,”
Butch says. He sits at home lonely day after day, watching
nothing but Boston Red Sox games on TV, waiting
for the calendar pages to turn to the days when he can
be one, two, three, together again with the students he
loves.
On that day the door will swing open, and
standing there, young and strong, will be two freshmen.
And, really, just seeing them is what Picking Up Butch is
all about.
Tom Cleaver
- A Memorable Year (2004-05) -
What a year it was for Middlebury College wide receiver
Tom Cleaver.
His season culminated when he was named a National
Scholar Athlete, earning an $18,000 post-graduate
scholarship offered by The National Football Foundation
and College Hall of Fame. The class of 15 people
included student-athletes from all NCAA divisions, I-A,
I-AA, II, and III. To be eligible for a National Football
Foundation and College Hall of Fame post-graduate
fellowship, the nominee must be a senior or graduate
student in his final year of eligibility, have a grade point
average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, have shown superior
academic application and performance, have outstanding
football ability as a first team player, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
“After thorough review of over 150 outstanding candidates representing schools
of all sizes and all playing levels, the committee’s deliberations resulted in the selection of
an exceptional 15 scholar-athletes,”
stated Robert E. Mulcahy III, chairman
of the Awards Committee and director of athletics at Rutgers University.
"Knowing the importance of these awards, the committee takes
the charge of selecting the best and brightest seriously, and I applaud them
for this effort."
Cleaver was recognized at The National Football Foundation and
College Hall of Fame’s 47th Annual Awards Dinner on December 7th,
2005 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
A true inspiration to his family, friends, teammates, coaches and
classmates, Cleaver exceeded the greatest of expectations, athletically and
academically, while he boldly continues to fight Chronic Mylogenous Leukemia.
Despite a long absence from school while receiving treatments and
visiting hospitals, Cleaver admirably maintained his impressive academic record.
While his triumphs in the classroom were impressive, his gains on the gridiron were remarkable. After his disease rendered
him temporarily blind on the field in 2001 and chemotherapy weakened his body, he launched himself into a rigorous training
regiment, which enabled his return to the field.
In his first game back, he caught five passes for a team-high 76
yards and two touchdowns. In 2003, he earned first-team All-Conference
honors, while repeating the feat in 2004. He led the NESCAC with 7.75
receptions/game as well as 117.9 yards receiving/contest in '04. He caught
62 passes for 943 yards with five touchdowns. He ended his career at
Middlebury with school records for most catches in a season (62 in ’04),
most yards receiving in a season (943 in ’04) and in a career (1,974).
Director of the Middlebury M.S. Walk, he also received the ECAC
Award of Valor, the conference’s highest award, which is presented to a
student-athlete whose courage, motivation and relentless determination
serves as an inspiration to all.
Cleaver graduated three years ago as a Dean’s List member, with
a political science major and economics minor. He is currently working
