Nicobar Islands represent a unique distribution of biodiversity in a
contrasting interface of terrestrial and marine habitats. 19.65 per
cent area of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is under protected areas
comprising 9 National Parks and 96 Wildlife Sanctuaries. Protected
areas are critical for the conservation of residual tropical forest
biodiversity. These protected areas are considered to have some of
the highest wildlife values in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.
They also protect some of the most spectacular scenery in these
islands. The protected areas contributes to the protection of
biodiversity in this region and is integral to the conservation of
wildlife populations, plant communities and biodiversity. They offer
a wide range of top caliber wilderness recreation opportunities and
outstanding features such as the highest peaks of the Saddle Peak
and Mount Thullier.
Important Bird Area (IBA)
The following 19 sites have been identified as Important Birds Areas
in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Table 5).
