A smaller volume of the rotor recess improves fuel consumption and performance at<br />

W.O.T., but, at the same time, increases the amount of emission of NO and HC.<br />

PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN INCREASED BURNING SPEED<br />

(1) KNOCKING<br />

The rotor recess of high compression ratio or of squish flow intensified type will raise the<br />

working gas pressure in the trailing side of the combustion chamber at heavy-load. As the<br />

burning speed is increased, "knocking" is liable to occur. Therefore, the rotor recess must be<br />

selected so that the working gas pressure in the trailing side will not be raised more than<br />

necessary. Fig. 36 shows the research octane number with the varied compression ratios.<br />
