Timiron ® BF-1001 – value added bi-functional pearlescent pigments
Hawthorne, NY, EMD Chemicals Inc. the North American Specialty Chemicals affiliate
of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany will launch a new generation of bi-functional
pigments starring Timiron ® BF-1001, a silver-white pearlescent pigment. Bi-functional
pigments combine the exceptional properties of pearl luster pigments - brilliance, luster
and gloss with an additional functionality – the microbiological stabilization of cosmetic
formulations.
Microbes can easily contaminate cosmetic formulations due to the presence of water,
nutrients, pH values (6–8), and temperature. Consequently, preservatives are used in
cosmetic formulations to hinder contamination. Preservatives, however, are currently
under discussion in the scientific community because they may cause health and
allergy concerns. With the development of the new bi-functional Timiron ® BF-1001
pigment by EMD Chemicals Inc. an improved approach with clear advantages is now
possible: improvement of microbiological stability of cosmetic formulations, multipurpose
skin care activities, safe toxicological profile, easy formulation, and a patent
pending technology.
The silver-white pigment Timiron ® BF-1001 creates silky luster effects in both color
cosmetics and personal care products. The additional functionality is the
microbiological stabilization of cosmetic formulations. Extensive testing in a wide
range of cosmetic formulations with 2% Timiron ® BF-1001 (corresponding to 0.0013%
Ag + in finished cosmetic product) showed very encouraging results. Moreover,
Timiron ® BF-1001 influences the overproduction of microorganisms of the normal skin
microflora and is therefore particularly suitable for skin care products.
Timiron ® BF-1001 has a particle size range of 5–25 µm. It can be easily incorporated
into water and oil based systems, and is pH and thermally stable.
The bi-functionality of Timiron ® BF-1001 gives added value to cosmetic formulations as
it lends an attractive pearl luster, with an additional functionality of microbiological
stabilization in cosmetic and skin care formulations.
Timiron ® BF-1001 will have an impact on tomorrow’s cosmetic formulations.
