BANGKOK-As the gay liberation<br />
movement continues its spread into<br />
developing nations, more than 30 Asian<br />
activists gathered in late August in<br />
Bangkok to share ideas and plot international<br />
strategy.<br />
The conference was hosted by the<br />
Fraternity for AIDS Cessation in Thailand<br />
---ml oJBanization known as much for its<br />
gay rights WOlk as AIDS activism.<br />
. Delegates attended from Guam,<br />
Japan and Malaysia, and gay groups in<br />
many other Asian nations, including<br />
Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan,<br />
sent letters regretting that they did not<br />
have any travel funds. Several absent<br />
organizations sent papers detailing the<br />
state of their lc:x:algay movements.<br />
As the conference opened, key Thai<br />
activistNatee Teerarojjanapongs told delegates,<br />
"Over the past decade, we have<br />
seen a dramatic shift in acceptance of gay<br />
identity and lifestyles in Bangkok, as the<br />
result of the development of a Significant<br />
gay business community, ii vigorous gay<br />
press and the role of good gay men presented<br />
in the media."<br />
Japanese delegates described a new<br />
spirit of gay liberation in their nation.<br />
Asian Wind editor Seiichi Madon said that<br />
"the single lifestyle" (dokushtn shug{J has<br />
become trendy in the past five years and<br />
has created a niche for gay men who<br />
want to eschew marriage and parenthood.<br />
"Let us speak up courageously<br />
without being afraid of disputes," added<br />
Teishiri Minami of the Japanese<br />
International Lesbian and Gay Association<br />
