The black rhinoceros or hook-lipped rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) is
one of earth’s largest living land mammals, typically weighing up to
1500 kg. It is native to sub-Saharan Africa.
Under natural conditions, black rhinoceroses can live as long as 40
years. In the wild few of them are likely to live anywhere near as
long, as the huge mammals have been hunted intensively for many
years – precisely because of their most effective defense against
enemies, These are in great demand in the Far East, where they
are used in traditional medicine to cure a large number of ailments,
including fevers, headaches, and rheumatism.
EDITORIAL
Is not strange that debt continues to grow and the increasingly
indebted institutions continue to grow as well.
The phenomenon of the sick and ailing continuing to grow
is an offshoot of an extremely dangerous constellation,
namely monopoly.
The public sector as the epitome of monopoly seems
to be aware of how dangerous it is inasmuch as it is adopting
increasingly drastic measures to monitor competition.
At the same time we are contemporary witnesses of how
in Europe, as a result of the EU, a nexus of monopolies is
morphing into a gigantic cartel; the financially disastrous,
demoralizing concept of redistribution is being raised to a
new level, valuable tax competition is being eliminated and
to crown it all the monopoly arising from coordinated
states is being merged with the central banks’ monopoly
of money. The result is a frightening concentration of
power, with concomitant consequences: The monster
thinks that it can boost the economy by creating debt and
solve problems by printing money; it assails private ownership
ever more blatantly; it attacks (tax) oases (so as to
create deserts); it presumes to have the knowledge to
solve all problems; and it employs a formidable array of
weapons such as threats, pressure, coercion, defamation,
destruction of measures of value (money), criminalization
of citizens, and, if everything else fails, military force – of
that, too, it has a monopoly.
Monopoly is the enemy of the market; accordingly, the
latter must be denigrated with concepts such as “market
failure” and subjected to growing intervention and regulation
for high-sounding reasons chosen to disguise the
monster’s ugliness. But as such unsound practices spread,
so do people increasingly yearn for soundness and solidity
– an opportunity? Definitely!
Yours sincerely
Daniel Model
The model Group achieved consolidated sales of
CHF 660 million in the 2011 financial year. This
represents sales growth of 3.2 % compared to the
previous year; adjusted for currency translation effects,
sales increased by 8.3 %. In the year under
review the Group had a workforce of 3096, or an
increase of 94 employees (i.e. 3.1 %) on the previous
year. exactly half of the new employees were
taken on for the new profit center Copack Plus Niedergösgen.
Investments totaling CHF 81 million
were channeled into modernization projects.
04–05
MODEL GROuP 2011
Solid in a challenging market environment
In its national markets the Model Group
sold a total of 619 million m2 of corrugated
board packaging, which was unchanged yearon-year.
However, the results for the individual
countries differed considerably: Whereas in
Switzerland, Germany, France, and Croatia
sales volumes declined after a comparably
solid first six months, they continued to rise in
the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Slovenia,
and the remaining markets.
Market prices for container board fluctuated
substantially. Prices for corrugating medium
rose from EUR 440/t at the beginning of
the year to a historical high of EUR 510/t in
summer, only to collapse to EUR 415/t at the
end of the year. In 2011 the average price for
paper was about 4.5 % higher than in the previous
year. Together, the two Swiss paper
mills in Weinfelden and Niedergösgen produced
some 284,000 tonnes of recycled-paper-based
container board. This disappointing
overall result should be seen against the backdrop
of the second phase of reconstruction at
Aarepapier in the first half of the year and
market-driven corrective measures at both
sites in the second half of the year.
The production of 26,300 tonnes of folding
boxes reflected a decline in production at
three of the four cardboard packaging facilities;
only Cardboard Opava increased output
– not only of folding boxes, but also of laminated
cardboard packaging as well.
A lot of energy, time, and money were invested
in the newly established profit center
Copack Plus Niedergösgen. That said, the facility
was unable to cover its costs in the first
year. Of the total investments of CHF 81 million,
the largest single project by far was the
new wet end at Aarepapier. Folding box manufacturing
in Opava was expanded and modernized
with the commissioning of an additional
production hall, three new 8-color printing
presses, and a gluer. Both module facers/corcorrugators
of the corrugated board plant at
Model AG in Weinfelden were renewed.
The objective of the Model Top Initiative is
to improve efficiency by introducing leaner,
standardized processes and material flows
and shorter throughput times and lower inventory
levels. In 2011 the first steps in implemen-

tation were completed at all Group production
plants. The folding box plant in Hanau served
as the pilot site for the further development of
our plants on the basis of lean principles. In the
second half of the year all production plants
implemented the first steps of the Initiative.
These measures are already starting to bear
fruit, and we shall rapidly press on with our
implementation activities in 2012.
outlook
The economic downturn in Europe and the
strong Swiss franc are likely to negatively impact
both sales and new orders in the current
year as well. The announced increases in the
prices of container board, triggered by the high
cost of recycled paper, starch, and energy, will
not go unnoticed in the packaging industry.
We shall meet these challenges with innovative
solutions, optimal use of packaging for
our clients, flexibility, and perfect customer
service.
As always, our main focus will be on improving
productivity. To this end in 2012 we
intend to make investments in the amount of
the previous year.
As you, our business partners, are aware,
solid progress is the culmination of many small
steps – we hope that in this year, too, our discipline
and hard work will once again earn us
your trust.
Thank you for your loyalty
MODEL TOP INITIATIVE
Interview Porsche Consulting
mr lechel, following the efforts to implement the basic themes of
the model Top Initiative, a value stream analysis prepared the
ground for the introduction of first important steps in the field of
flow management at various locations in the model Group.
what is the core message of the concept of flow management
or lean management as a process-oriented approach?
The concept of flow management incorporates the principles
of flow, rhythm, pull, and no mistakes. Like the concept
of lean management, it describes the essence of the
Toyota Production System. The object of flow management
is the elimination of all waste in the process. This
applies at both the operative and the administrative levels.
The clear goal is to maximize corporate profit with the highest
level of customer satisfaction and full integration of all
employees.
many model box readers have almost certainly been through
various management waves: Total quality management,
diversification, computer integrated manufacturing, and
simultaneous engineering, to mention just a few of them.
Is flow or lean management another new wave?
No, because flow or lean management may not be viewed
as a management tool, but as a cultural change with the
goal of creating a lean company.
You should not make the mistake of believing that you can
sometimes resort to lean management and sometimes
ignore it. If you decide to introduce lean management you
make the decision to pursue it consistently and continuously.
The Toyota Production System is viewed as the be-all and
end-all. even after more than 50 years lean management or
kaizen has lost none of its impact, and is still attracting
imitators. And not only in the car industry. That is true, isn’t it?
does this also hold for the packaging industry?
Of course this also holds for the packaging industry. The
origin is the Toyota Production System; accordingly, the
transformation first took place in the car industry. Today
there is no industry that has not grappled with lean management.
The four principles of flow, rhythm, pull, and no
mistakes have been successfully adapted to all process
environments. Construction companies, hospitals, banks
or insurance companies have all successfully taken the cultural
step to becoming lean companies, whereby the huge
potentials have been realized in the administrative processes
as much as in the operative processes.
over the decades Toyota developed a production system that
has indeed become a trailblazer in mass production, but
increasingly also influenced research and development as well
as small-batch production. It is rooted in an intrinsic virtue of
engineering: eliminate waste wherever possible. Can we in fact
speak of a theory of waste?
The important point is the emphasis on value creation in
fulfilling customers’ wishes. Whether it is a mass product,
a unique piece, or a service is irrelevant. The important
point is to focus on the processes and to attain transparency
in order to distinguish between value creation and
wastefulness. In this way it is possible to reduce and eliminate
waste.
based on the specification of customer needs, i.e. of customer
value, lean management requires the elimination of all waste in
a company’s value creation chain. The Japanese word for this is
muda. what is the best way to eliminate muda?
The way to eliminate muda is to learn to see. To recognize
muda and attribute it to the proper source. Lean management
offers various methods and instruments to achieve
this, e.g. the value stream analysis. The important point, as

model box
10–11
MODEL TOP INITIATIVE
we have already said, is to distinguish between
muda and value creation. Then it is possible
to reduce and eliminate muda.
In the eyes of financial analysts, companies that
apply the latest methods are significantly better
than traditional firms, which are more reluctant to
take up new things. would you call flow management
a new method? what do you see as the
goal?
The flow management is based on the Toyota
Production System as developed by Taiichi
Ohno in 1950. This is the reason why we
speak of a successful tradition and not of a
new method. Of course this topic is a challenge
for the Model Group, but the timing of
the change is perfect. The market challenges
associated with change have grown tougher
in recent years. Whether it is a question of, for
example, shorter throughput times combined
with a greater range of alternatives, or inventories
of semi-finished and finished products,
which tie up large amounts of capital, flow
management, i.e. cultural change to create a
leaner company, is the right, and the only, answer.
lean management aims to meet targets with a
minimum of resources and effort. How do you
regard such a statement in an age of ecological
responsibility, soaring commodity prices, and a
scarcity of resources?
To sustainably and efficiently produce ecological
and economical packaging, you need
lean processes along the entire value chain.
This begins with product development, i.e.
the realization of the customer’s wishes.
The study and optimization of this holistic
value chain is the core of lean management,
which thus automatically supports a company’s
ecological responsibility. LEAN=GREEN
For outsiders it is almost impossible to recognize
the successful guidelines introduced by concepts
such as flow management. They only attract
public attention when a company’s success is
attributed to them. what can model customers
expect from flow management within the model
Group?
We think that the customers of the Model
Group are well able to assess and recognize
where the implementation of flow management
will produce initial major successes.
Lean management is already part of the culture
of many Model customers. There can be
no doubt that the Hanau site already serves
as a beacon that has made an impression on
customers. In general, Model customers will
benefit from shorter throughput times, high
deadline reliability, costs, and quality.
In which way can the lean principles of flow
management enable logistics in the field of supply
chain management to achieve greater cost savings
and customer satisfaction?
Of course, the holistic introduction of flow
management also has a positive impact on the
supply chain. The supplier and the customer
are integrated more closely and more immediately
into the logistics processes. Better planning
processes improve transparency and planning
reliability. The supplier is able to work with
less inventory in his processes and the customer
benefits from high reliability of delivery.
many methods can be used to achieve improvements
in a company. For long-term success it
is crucial to pay attention to all determinants. The
flow management approach deals with all
aspects that contribute to a company’s success:
quality, costs, logistics, employee motivation,
safety, security, technology, and the environment.
It looks at the entire process chain – from
the supplier to the customer. How do you achieve
optimal integration of end customers and
suppliers?
The impending change should be communicated
to both sides at an early stage. In doing
so it must be made clear what the advantages
for the suppliers and for the customers are.
The company must treat its suppliers as system
suppliers and partners and make a point
of integrating them into the lean processes.
The potential of implementing flow management
lies in giving customers precisely what
they want. That is the great gain.

Two new corrugators/module facers and a process control
system for the corrugated board plant. The replacement of
the two corrugators, including steam system, and installation
of a process control system were the final steps in
renewing all the machinery at the plant. Thus, over the
past four years the entire plant has been upgraded to
state-of-the-art technology. The two new corrugators
come with a new heating system. Thanks to enhanced
convective heat transfer and peripheral heating of the rolls,
the corrugators use less energy. In addition, more rapid
cooling and heating enables the system to react far more
quickly to changes in production parameters, which ensures
more constant quality. In turn, this more constant
quality coupled with cutting edge track and tracing performance
measurement systems, which measure paper
moisture and temperature, make it possible for the process
control system itself to regulate certain parameters.
This future oriented investment in one of its core competencies
is evidence of the importance that Model attaches
to quality and in particular lower energy consumption and,
thus, the conservation of natural resources; at Model these
aspects are incorporated into investment planning. In
terms of productivity and quality, Model AG’s corrugated
board plant is a leader in its field in Europe.
For years Model has also been a partner for customers
with smaller and special orders. As there are practically
no standard processing machines in this field, Model
specialists have worked with competent partners to develop
a new machine that is flexible enough to cope with
a very wide range of finishing options for smaller and special
orders. The machine handles functions such as crosscutting,
slotting, scoring, grooving and creasing, and slitting
for several applications as a matter of course. Aside
from increasing optimization, the main advantage of the
machine, however, is the possibility of producing parti-
tions in all sorts of shapes and sizes, even customized to
meet the needs of individual customers.
expanding its production capacity. At the end of last year
Model Obaly installed a new offset printing press – a KBA
The new folder gluer with braille technology was installed
in summer 2011; the Asitrade laminator line will be
mounted in summer 2012. The laminator will enable the
production of five-layer laminated boxes, a growing segment
for heavy goods requiring the highest quality printed
packaging.
The Model Group acquired Model Pakiranja in 2001. The
company produces a wide range of corrugated board
packaging. To ensure its position as one of the leading
packaging manufacturers in Croatia, in 2011 the company
further upgraded its highly efficient processing plant by
investing in the most important equipment for its needs,
software and hardware, and a new lighting system in the
production area.
As part of its planned process upgrading, Model Emballages
bought two loaders for its combinations Martin 618
and 1228 machines. This equipment enables fully automated
feeding of the machines with corrugated boards.
The commissioning of a new machine to strap the pallets
has also improved the packaging part of the production
process. With this fully automated press it possible to perfectly
adapt the strapping to every kind of palletization so
that it conforms to the specific project description docu

ment of each and every customer and for each and every
product. Over and above this, the company also invested,
as it does every year, in replacing equipment, e.g. replacing
the binding machines of the combinations, which resulted
in a significant improvement in bale quality.
The major project was undoubtedly the expansion of
the storage shelving in the shipping department. The goal
of this project was optimal utilization of area and volume
of the hall in question, the improvement of the storage
quality of each pallet, and the guarantee of traceability and
of FIFO (first in first out) inventory management. After a
detailed investigation, Model Emballages chose storage
racks with a narrow aisle (1.75 m) equipped with highlifters
that have drivers, but are supported by a command
system. This storage system is flexible and comes with
24 different pallet formats that optimize the width and the
height of every pallet in the respective shelf. Model Emballages
has a total of slightly more than 3000 storage
shelves. To facilitate traceability, each pallet has a label
with a unique SSCI barcode. This is read by a scanner at
the warehouse entrance, which then allocates a storage
shelf number, making it possible to determine at all times
where the pallet is. The prerequisite in the shipping area:
WiFi technology.
Projects at Thurpapier
The investments carried out at the paper mill in Weinfelden
focused on energy-saving and quality-enhancing
measures. A substantial investment was made in the
waste water treatment plant and the power plant. The
boiler control was remodeled in such a way that it is possible
to comply with the statutory emission standards and
yet burn off 98 % of the biogas that collects in the anaerobic
stage of the waste treatment facility. Prior to the remodeling
the figure was 70 – 80 %. This was achieved
without any additional natural gas. The remodeling also
resulted in a substantial increase in boiler efficiency in the
base load range. Thus, about 7,500 tonnes of extra steam
are produced each year without any additional fuel costs.
To counteract the risk of a power failure, a second redundant
grid infeed was constructed for the entire Weinfelden
site. Further investments: Condensation utilization
to heat the incoming air for the drying hood: steam saving
of about 3,000 t/year. On stationary siphons in combination
with the renewal of the drying hood of paper machine
2: better drainage of the cylinder, steam saving of
about 5,500 t/year. To improve the paper quality in
respect of profile: two headboxes of paper machine 2
refurbished and adjusted to the new pressure ratios.
Furthermore, a moisture beam was installed to correct
the moisture profile.
Aarepapier AG, Niedergösgen
Rebuilding the stock approach flow of the wire section
and the disk filter has made the quality of the paper produced
more competitive. The latest former technology
makes it possible to also produce 90 g/m² corrugated material.
If running smoothly it is possible to produce container
board of up to 140 g/m² at a speed of almost 800 m/
min. Installing a disk filter, which offers three different
qualities of white water filtering, has considerably improved
the initial situation in the water supply system,
which is reflected in smoother production and lower
water consumption per tonne produced.

PRoFIle AARePAPIeR NIedeRGöSGeN
Recovered or used paper (including cardboard and corrugated
paperboard industry. Recycling in the paper and cardboard industry
has taken recycling management to a new level. The technical
possibilities of processing waste materials and the quality of the
paper produced have steadily improved, making it possible to
increase the recycled paper content in a range of different types
of paper and cardboard. Recovered paper is not waste, but a
valuable raw material.
Thanks to statistics for the amount of recovered paper employed
in paper and cardboard mills in Switzerland, the Association of
the Swiss Pulp, Paper and Cartonboard Industry (zPK) knows
exactly how many tonnes of recovered paper are used in the
production of recycled paper every year. (For details visit altpapier.ch
or zpk.ch)
A global market
In reality, there is no longer a separate Swiss or even European
market for paper: the market is a global market. Today
the flows of used paper are international. Most paper
mills are owned by multinational companies. The prices
are determined at the locations where demand for recovered
paper is greatest; currently this means above all China
and India. In Switzerland more than one million tonnes of
recovered paper are converted into paper, paperboard, and
cardboard every year. The largest market for these products
is Germany. China is the second largest paper producer
in the world after the USA. There is a huge demand
for paper in China, much of which has to be imported. In
line with its growing economy, China’s imports of used
paper are rising steadily. Whereas previously demand for
used paper came from independent, family-run companies,
many of which employed recycled paper to manufacture
niche products, today demand is driven by multinational
companies with an annual production in excess of
200,000 tonnes. For the recovered paper trade one consequence
has been a reduction in the variety and quality of
paper.
Changing market for recovered paper
The recovered paper trade has also changed. Nowadays,

recyclable materials collection is often in the hands of multinational
companies. Increasingly, government and municipal
institutions are also entering the recyclable paper
and waste management business. Moreover, as a result of
new reading habits and new print media, the number of
newspapers read in today’s digital world is declining. The
newspaper industry, the largest user of recovered paper
originating in private households, is on the verge of colossal
changes. No one doubts that these will impact the market
for recyclable paper.
Annual contracts, monthly contracts, the spot market
and the value of recovered paper
Conditions in the market for recovered paper vary considerably.
The price of recovered paper rises and falls depending
on contract duration, in other words on whether the
contract is for one year, several years, one month, or for
odd lots in the spot market. This is determinant of the appreciable
and growing price differences now characteristic
of the market. Whereas recently all prices for recyclable
paper have trended steadily upward, not so long ago used
paper dealers were paying to get rid of their recyclable
paper. Today, it is not uncommon for the value of recovered
paper to more than cover the cost of collection. Reasons
for this development include rising oil prices, which
encourages energy-conserving recycling, the growing demand
for packaging materials in Asia’s booming economies,
most of which are made from recycled material, and
advertising in the print media, most of which today are almost
exclusively produced from recycled paper.
Ultimately, demand for recovered paper is a function
of demand in the emerging markets in the Far East. It is
tempting to speculate that current prices for recovered paper
are part of a long-term upward trend, as can be observed
in the case of many other commodities whose
prices are determined by demand in China and India.

In recent years we have made considerable progress
in the field of die-cutting technology, often motivated by
the growing needs and rising standards of our own customers.
The coordination and synchronization of packaging
material, die-cutting tools, and gumming and application
technology is an essential aspect in the successful
realization of an innovative packaging or display solution.
Lower paper weights (or grammage), higher recycling percentages,
a greater degree of automation in packing, and
more complex forms of packaging require correspondingly
greater technical expertise.
As an application technology, die-cutting and stamping
offers enormous potential for further improvements in
processes and packaging solutions in the future. It is our
object to further develop our professional expertise in this
field and to offer it to our customers on-site in the packing
process or through the delivery of products. By employing
new applications for die-cutting technology we aim to
meet requirements for hygienic food packaging, dust-free
packaging solutions, and packaging solutions tailored to
the packing process.
The toolmaking platform is another new component of
our ICC innovation management. This includes a proactive
approach to all aspects of die-cutting technology, application
technology, and their adjuncts, namely the tools themselves.
By promoting even closer cooperation between
development, toolmaking, and production, we hope to
generate and launch an ongoing stream of innovative solutions
for our customers.
Covered packaging
ELEGANT PACkAGING
Although you may not realize it, at some point you have almost
surely held covered packaging, or rigid set-up boxes, as they are
also known, in your hands. Covered packaging is usually produced
in the form of a rigid set-up box consisting of a cover and
base, and is a particularly elegant form of packaging.
Lid and base are made of robust paperboard, which
gives them durability, and subsequently covered in any of
a variety of papers in different styles. The paper cover or
wrap may be made of natural or printed fi ne papers, which
can be further distinguished by an additional fi nish such as
varnishing, litho lamination, or embossing.
In addition to high-quality product packaging, this type
of packaging is the perfect material for manufacturing upright
fi les for documents, slipcases, and protective sheaths
for valuable books. The last pair of shoes you bought was
probably boxed in covered packaging. Games, puzzles,
jewelery, cosmetics, confectionery, candles, business
cards, stationery, and clothing are just some of the products
that are packaged in rigid set-up boxes for protection.
As you can see, the uses of this type of packaging are
i n fi n i t e .
Model has the appropriate equipment to cover base
and lid in the paper of your choice. The result is elegant,
functional packaging for all types of products. The choice
of cover papers is virtually unlimited, from plain white or
black, through plain colors, to extravagant patterns. We
also have papers that reproduce the feel of suede, metal,
and different reptile leathers. To create a particularly elegant
impression customers have the choice of foils and
holographic paper styles, either smooth or embossed,
with a matt or high-gloss fi nish. With digital technology it
is easy to prepare the graphics and logos of your choice
and print them on the appropriate papers.
benefi ts of rigid set-up boxes
As a rule, covered packaging is not only “attractive and
elegant,” but is also stable and durable and offers excellent
protection for the products inside. The Model Group has
been producing rigid set-up boxes at its plant in Au for
many years. They are still as popular today as when they
fi rst appeared: They add a special note of elegance to
every product, and elegance, as we all know, is never out
out of fashion. A set-up box tells the consumer that the
packaging contains something special, and that something
special is a quality product. It is not uncommon for particularly
beautiful boxes to “outlive” the original content of the
packaging. On account of their elegant appearance or special
construction the recipients are happy to re-use these
boxes, often many times over. Thanks to fi nishing techniques,
including foil embossing, covered packaging is an
excellent marketing tool. Nothing says more about the

quality of a product than the quality of its packaging. Elegant
materials, elaborate processing, and ornamental and
decorative elements add a particular fl air to the appearance
of these presentation boxes.
An attractive presentation box stands out from the
crowd, a real eye-catcher thanks to its visual appeal and
sophistication. Whether sleek modern minimalist or fashionably
conspicuous, in its many guises this box is always
good for a surprise and always makes an impact. The addition
of hinges, fasteners, and elegant handles will give setup
boxes that something extra at the point of sale and
equip them to meet all requirements. Deep drawn or rigid
foam parts that are used to hold products (chocolates,
glassware, etc.) in place are often inserted directly during
the production process.
development, manufacture, processing
Depending on the model, there may be no tooling costs
involved in production. Thus, on closer inspection this type
of packaging may be more affordable than you think. This
may be an advantage with smaller orders. At Model Prime-
Pac AG we can rely on our proven manufacturing capabilities
and creative know-how to realize attractive, functional,
and innovative packaging ideas. Moreover, effi cient semiautomatic
and fully automatic production lines enable us to
manufacture rigid set-up boxes of the highest quality.
With their wealth of ideas and ability to exploit technical
possibilities to the limit, our experienced and talented
team is solely intent on developing the packaging that
meets the requirements and standards that customer has
set for the product to be packaged. A packaging solution of
eye-catching exclusivity and elegance.

COSMETICS PACkAGING
Louis Model
1847-1929
From 1900
The model Group can look back on a long tradition. In 1882
louis model founded a hand pulping factory in ermatingen,
Switzerland. In time this hand pulping factory came to specialize
in industrial packaging. The company expanded steadily and today
has a number of production sites in europe. The model
Group is now owned by the fourth generation of the founder’s
family; its head offi ce is in weinfelden, Switzerland. In 2000
model acquired Kramp & Comp., after the long-established offenbach
fi rm fi led for bankruptcy.
The company was founded by Louis Kramp as a lithographic
arts institute in 1832. By the end of the nineteenth
century the fi rm had made a name for itself worldwide as
a printer of labels for the cosmetics industry. Initially located
in the Ludwigstrasse in Offenbach, the company
later moved to Waldhof, then Klein-Auheim and, fi nally, to
Otto-Hahn-Strasse 41 in Hanau-Steinheim, where a new
factory was inaugurated in October 2011.
The facility not only houses one of the most modern
printing works for folding boxes in Europe, but has also
realized a novel energy recovery concept and comprehensive
process know-how. Model Kramp’s new printing plant
meets the highest standards in respect of climate protection
and the work environment. The plant produces folding
boxes for the premium segment of the cosmetic industry:
a company in step with the times.
Knowledge, ability and commitment
When Louis Kramp set up business in Offenbach in 1832,
it was not his intention to found a large company. He was

1956 1957
1948 1969 1970 1971 1980 1990 2011
an artist, not a manufacturer; hence, it is not surprising that
his partner and some of the employees that he took on in
his “Lithographic Art Institute” over the years were also
painters and lithographers. When you consider that it took
between six and nine months to prepare the lithographic
stones for printing, it is clear that in terms of time the printing
itself was a minor activity. A good print was the crowning
event of a prolonged artistic activity. This also explains
Louis Kramp’s initial resistance to better, faster printing
presses: he wanted to remain the artist he was.
Around 1865 six painters were employed on a fulltime
basis. Among other things, they painted over misprints
to produce paintings that catered to the prevailing
taste. From 1880 onward the company had 12 hand
presses operated by an equal number of printers. However,
only when the business switched to producing artistic
labels and complementary material for the perfumery
and soap industry did its workforce really expand. The age
of technological change was permeated by the ambition to
replace manual work with machines, and in this respect
the printing industry was no exception. In time lithography
using photographic processes replaced stone lithography;
everything was better and faster with fi lm.
In the past 180 years Model Kramp, as the company is
known today, has acquired a reputation as a reliable partner
of the international perfumery and cosmetics industry.
Regardless of whether the customer chooses high-quality
paper or high-quality paperboard, the principle has
remained the same: satisfy the wishes of the customers,
realize the ideas of the creators and designers, and encourage
the introduction of new and/or improved technology.

WORLD Of CARDBOARD
The display for 13 x 70 g chocolate bars was made of brown E-flute corrugated board, which is
optimal for flexo printing. What makes this packaging so special is that the die-cut element can be
inverted. The lock bottom thus becomes the lid, and the tuck-in flap becomes the base. This type
of packaging is more ergonomic to fill, since the packaging does not have to be turned 180° each
time. The cardboard case was manufactured by Model PrimePac AG using offset printing.
Miko international makes traditional Armenian honey cakes from an old family recipe and packs its
delicious products in packaging supplied by Model Obaly, Opava. Every piece of the packaging set
features a pleasant combination of matching wine red and creamy colors. Four-color print was
combined with matt and glossy varnishes to achieve the final pleasant visual experience. Some of
the graphic elements used were highlighted through relief embossing.
The packaging was offset printed and laminated, which underscores
the premium design look and enhances the visual value
effect.
Model Obaly, Opava produced an interesting packaging concept
for Ostrapack Belgian pralines. At a glance, the packaging cover
seems to be covered with fine leather. This fantastic leather imitation
was achieved with the use of relief embossing. The sides of
the offset printed packaging were finished with hot gold foil
woRld 2011
His commitment
paid off. In addition
to eight season
victories, in
2011 Bernhard
Oberholzer also
won a silver
medal in track
points racing and
a gold in road racing
at the Universiade in Shenzhen, China.
The Universiade is the world’s second largest
multi-sport event after the Summer
Olympic Games.
The Miami World
Cup marked a
debut for Kathrin
Frey in two respects.
It was
her first competition
after a ninemonth
injury layoff
and it was the
first time she had fought at this level. Winning
the bronze medal in Miami was one of
her greatest and most rewarding successes
to date. It proved to her that she is not only
fully fit again but also worthy of a place in
the elite category.
In a cliffhanger
fistball match
against Jona, the
players of Swiss
2011 field champions
SVD Diepoldsau-Schmitter
also won the Swiss
2011/2012 indoor final.
This year, the
2011 Young
Package competition
once again
achieved a record
breaking
number of participants. The competition attracted
nearly 700 young designers not just
from the Czech Republic but from another
46 countries as well. The competition was
divided into two categories: the “Product
Package” category with the theme “Package
for a National Product” and the “Different
View” category with this year’s theme
titled “Book as a Package for Words” focused
primarily on graphic design.
The construction
of this packaging
for olives may be
somewhat complicated,
but its “rotational” character gives
it an undisputable appeal. The packaging is
suitable for packing smaller amounts of
products (e.g. for various promotional actions),
as its assembly requires a certain
degree of handiness. Nevertheless, the
packaging is sure to stand out among all the
“square” boxes we see every day.
With a 3-1 victory
over Näfels,
Amriswil won
the Swiss Volleyball
Cup Final
for third time after
1999 and 2009. This latest victory was
under new trainer Dario Bettello. Model has
been a sponsor of the men’s no. 1 team for
over ten years.
