S-N fatigue curve, stiffness trends and microscopic damage evolution for different values of biaxiality ratio are discussed. 1. Introduction In spite of its importance in the design of structural components that are subjected to complex load histories with variability of loading direction and intensity, the fatigue behaviour of composite materials under multiaxial loading has received only little attention by the scientific community. A recent review by the authors, [1], indicated the deep lack of information about the damage evolution during the fatigue life: only few papers in fact report quantitative analysis and damage growth data [2], qualitative information and stiffness trends can be found in [3-7]. A strong influence of the shear stress on the multiaxial fatigue strength was also shown. Eventually, the analysis of reliability of some criteria available for life prediction, done again in [1], clearly suggested the need of a physically based model suitable to describe and account for the actual fatigue damage. This paper illustrates the preliminary experimental results of a project aimed at investigating the problem through the following steps: study of fatigue damage evolution under multiaxial loading conditions, analysis of the mutual influence of the stress components and understanding of the associated damage mechanisms and, eventually, development of a life prediction model suitable to incorporate these mechanisms. 2. Materials and specimens Tubular samples to be tested under combined tension-torsion loading were considered as the optimum solution to avoid free-edge effects on the damage evolution. Moreover by varying the ratio between external tension and torsion loading the mutual influence of the stress components on the damage evolution can be investigated. Samples were produced by wrapping of 4 layers of glass/epoxy UD pre-pregs at 90 o with respect to the longitudinal axis and then autoclave moulding.
