Our club is now beginning its twenty-second year.
In the coming months I plan to talk about the
graying of Central Valley Corvettes and discuss
such issues as demographics, who is retired, who is
still working, what type of Corvettes we own, and
preserving the future of CVC.
But as the new year unfolds, the message this month
will be about membership. We don’t always tell
you at the start of the year who left the club and
who joined, so let us begin there. The good news is
we picked up four (4) new members, Don and
Sharon Condley and Tom and Emily Piercy. The
bad and sad news is we lost nine (9) members. The
sad news was the passing of our dear friends Sheryl
DeMello and Michele Carli, plus there were seven
people who decided not to renew their membership
in 2013 including Dave and Mary Case, Sherry
Dixon and Mark Mangrum, Lee Rabner and Betty
Haron and Diane Tjerrild.
We started 2012 with 83 members and now in 2013
we have 78 members for a net loss of six percent
(6%). What has been happening is a slow, but
steady decline. Just a decade ago, we saw
membership levels as high as 107. But shortly
thereafter, our roster began dropping into the 90’s.
About three years ago we slipped into the 80’s.
Now for the first time, we have eroded into the 70’s.
Comparing the high water mark of 107 to our
current membership of 78, the club has atrophied by
twenty-seven percent (27%) in roughly the past
eight or nine years. Some of the decrease can be
attributed to the dark economy and part of it to our
devoted members that have passed away.
While seventy-eight still represents a healthy
number, it is something as a club we need to
eventually get serious about. Perhaps we need to
put together a recruiting committee. The goal
would be to come up with avenues to reach out to
Corvette owners and sell them on the benefits of
being in CVC. Maybe we need to look into
relaxing our policy of being a mandatory Corvette
owner to be in the club. If a member sells their car,
perhaps we give them additional time to locate a
replacement Corvette. Another possibility is to get
someone interested in joining the club with the goal
of getting them to purchase a Corvette sometime in
the future. Perhaps we should contact our previous
members and ask a few questions about why they
left and use that information to make CVC better.
While some of you may disagree with this concept,
the bottom line is CVC is getting older and
contracting each and every year. Next month, when
I tell you how three out of every four members are
over 60 and that six in every ten members are now
retired, you will see a clearer picture. I don’t want
to divulge everything this month, because part of
the challenge of being your President is to come up
with fresh material each and every month.
The idea of being in CVC is fellowship, enjoyment
and appreciation for America’s only true sports car.
But sooner than later this is a topic we need to
prioritize if CVC is to survive a long happy future.
Craig
General meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by
President Craig Hansen.
out the roster and to let her know if there are any
corrections. She reminded members about the
club's business cards that can be handed out to
potential members.
Craig also brought up decrease in membership and
that we will need to discuss ways to increase
membership.
LeighAnn Severance lost her mother on
Thursday, January 3. She lived in Stockton. Our
prayers and special thoughts go out to Skip and
LeighAnn. This is a difficult time for you.
Please let us all offer our support.
Rudy Hernandez tells us that Hermie also had a
death in her family in December. Hermie’s
father passed away on December 31 at the age
of 95 at Kaiser Hospital. All of his children
were with him at his bedside as he lapsed into
his final sleep. Please keep Hermie in your
thoughts and prayers so that she may find
comfort and solace knowing that her father is in
his glory.
Mike and JoAnn Crafton (Charlotte’s sister) are
living in Yosemite Lakes, which has been very
difficult since Mike’s stroke. They will be
moving back to Madera probably sometime in
January or early February. Mike is doing better
but needs a lot of help getting around as he is
now confined to a wheelchair.
Charlotte and Don returned to Oregon on
Monday, January 7. They enjoyed a two day
scenic drive along the coast. Unfortunately, they
hit a deer going about 65 miles per hour. They
were unhurt but the poor deer lost his life.
Charlotte adds a brief note regarding the Lion
King group run: She insists the group left her at
the theatre all alone. To make matters worse,
Don had everyone wave at her as they passed by
going in the opposite direction. She says it was
very traumatic! This story is close to the truth
but not quite totally!!
And now for some sunshine news: Linda
Laningham’s granddaughter Amanda is a
member of the Selma High Varsity Basketball
team. The team was featured in the Fresno Bee
with a picture of the 3 leading point makers.
Amanda was one of the players featured and has
been captain of the team for the past 3 years.
She is a senior this year. Linda and Chuck have
been fortunate enough to attend most of her
games. They are very proud grandparents!!
Keith and Debbie Garrison’s son (Keith) broke
his ankle riding dirt bikes in Mojave. He has
pins and rods in his ankle and is in a great deal
of pain. He is supposed to stay off his ankle for
10 days to keep the swelling down. It will be 3-
4 months before he can resume his usual
activities. Keith and Debbie hope the ankle will
heal fast and without complications.
Well it seems that MaryAnn and Roy Whitson
have been busy remodeling the master bathroom
of their home! This little project has not been
without problems and has taken 16 weeks;
MaryAnn called it a mess. The door that was
ordered came in wrong-it was an outswing
rather then an inswing! So of course, the door
had to be re-ordered. They had to get a new
door because the granite didn’t fit through the
old doorway. So they then had to cut down the
granite by one inch, take the door off the hinges
and take the door frame down, too. And then,
the shower would not drain. Seems the tile man
used some flex grout which oozed into the
plumbing. So, along comes the jackhammer to
use on the base of the shower. And then
MaryAnn did not care for the tile that Roy
picked out, so they had to get different tile for
the whole bathroom!! MaryAnn tells me this
story so that I would know she is a little stressed
out and a little cuckoo after 16 fun weeks of
remodeling.
See you all at the next meeting with more
sunshine and clouds information.

The following is a list that is generally
considered proper procedure or polite
when using a CB radio. It can also be
considered a beginner's survival guide.
This list was compiled from common
problems that have plagued beginners
since CBs first became popular.
- When two people are talking, essentially
they temporarily "own" the channel. US
FCC regulations say that they have to give
other people opportunities to use the channel
if they're going to use it more than several
minutes. But it is not up to an outsider to
"take" the channel from them.
- Take care not to "step on" other units (i.e.
transmitting at the same time as they are,
thereby making both your transmissions
unreadable.) This usually means that you
should adjust your break squelch level so
that you can hear the other unit and then
only begin to transmit when you can't hear
anyone else.
- NEVER deliberately key over someone
else. Nobody likes that.
- If you hear one unit break for another unit,
give some time for the unit to respond
before you say anything yourself. (Keep in
mind that they may have to fumble for a
microphone in a moving car or dodge
furniture enroute to a base station.)
Remember, the calling unit has the channel.
- If you want to talk on a channel that is in
use, it is very likely that your initial
transmissions will accidentally "walk over"
someone else's. So you must keep them
short. The word "break" is generally
accepted. Try to time it in a pause in the
conversation.
- Even when your "break" has been
recognized, keep your next transmission
short. For example, "Break one-seven for
Godzilla" if you're on Channel 17 and
looking for someone whose handle is
Godzilla. If Godzilla doesn't answer in a
reasonably short amount of time, it doesn't
hurt to say "thanks for the break" to the units
that stopped their conversation for you.
- If you break on an open (unused) channel,
you don't have to be as brief. For example,
"Break 17 for Godzilla. Are you out there
Godzilla?". However, the short form is
perfectly acceptable, too. Use what fits your
style.
- If someone speaking to you gets "walked
over" so that you can't understand the
message, you basically have two options.
You can tell the person you were listening
to, "10-9, you were stepped on", or you can
find out what the breaker wants, "Go ahead
break", before returning to your original
conversation. You should eventually
recognize the breaker and find out what they
want.
- If two people are talking and you would
like to interject a response, you will
probably just walk over someone. Use the
procedure above to properly break into the
conversation.
- If someone doesn't answer your breaks
after two or three attempts. Stop and wait for
several minutes or, in mobile units, for
several highway miles or city blocks. Others
may have their radios on and don't want to
listen to the same break more than three
times in succession.
- In other circumstances, improvise. Take
into account other people's points of view.
Give people proper access to the channel
and try not to do anything to annoy other
units.
- If you make a mistake in any of the
procedures above, don't waste air time on a
busy channel by apologizing. (If the channel
isn't busy, it's your choice.) Just try to do it
right in the future. Everyone takes a little
time to learn.
OK, now you know how to conduct yourself
on the radio. However, there are and will
probably always be units that don't. Be
patient. You don't have authority to enforce
any rules so don't break any by trying.
