From the Web | Online news from our local communities Education Two new LISD schools expected to open in 2011 Cedar Park New elementary and middle schools are expected to open in fall 2011, according to a Leander Independent School District press release. The LISD board of trustees approved construction on the two schools April 7. Elementary school No. 24 will be built near the intersection of Orchard Falls and Little Elm Trail in the Red Oaks subdivision. LISD voters approved the estimated $21.4 million for the school during a bond election in 2007. Middle school No. 8 will be located near CR 179 between Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Sam Bass Road. The $39.6 million for the school was approved in the 2007 bond election. A construction timeline has not been determined. New fossil playscape installed as Dinosaur Day nears Cedar Park Children climb, run and squeal near the remnants of a Tyrannosaurus rex while a trio of dinosaur eggs hatch. This is not the latest summer sci-fi blockbuster—it will be the scene at the latest attraction in a Williamson County park that pays homage to the area’s prehistoric roots. On April 9, work crews began installing the first three segments of a playscape that Cedar Park City Council Place 6 to have runoff election Cedar Park A runoff election looms for Place 6 on the Cedar Park City Council as Maria Talamo and Don Tracy accounted for 83.7 percent of the total vote. The seat is open after incumbent Cobby Caputo chose not to run for re-election. Talamo and Tracy are two of four candidates who ran for the seat. Eddie Hurst and Wayne Ruark were the other two candidates with 7.64 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively. Talamo, who is currently part of the Cedar Park 4B Community Development Corporation Board, obtained 42.5 percent of the votes. An 11-year resident of Cedar Park, she has the campaign slogan “Remember the Talamo.” “I’m running for City Council Place 6 because I love Cedar Park,” Talamo said at an April 5 Cedar Park candidate forum. “I want to Don Tracy Maria Talamo make Cedar Park a great place to live, work, play, raise a family and do business.” Tracy is part of the Cedar Park 4A Economic Development Sales Tax Corporation and had 41.2 percent. Tracy has lived in Cedar Park for eight years. Being a workforce professional will be beneficial to the City Council, he said. “This is the type of workforce experience our city needs in this crucial time as we prepare for future growth, and it would make me an excellent fit for City Council,” Tracy said at the forum. The runoff election will take place Saturday, June 12. LIBN will be the latest way to provide the residents of Leander with on-demand programming, including business, real estate and technology happenings within the city, said Kirk Clennan, Leander economic development director. The network started live at 9 a.m. from the downtown station of Capital Metro, 401 E. Fourth St., Austin. Clennan said city officials plan to broadcast from the different commuter rail stations, showcasing the station itself and what is around them. While City Council meetings will not be broadcast on Cedar Park farmers market to stay at 1890 Ranch for now Anthony Michel, a grower for Hillside Farms, makes change for a customer. Cedar Park Cedar Park Farms to Market has come to an agreement to stay in the parking lot of the 1890 Ranch shopping center for the foreseeable future; however, market organizers will continue to search for a larger location. As of May 8, the market will now be held directly behind Cinemark. Endeavor Real Estate Group, which manages the shopping center, terminated a verbal agreement May 4 with nonprofit F2M Texas that allowed a farmers market to operate in the parking lot 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every week as long as the market did not interfere with tenants. The termination notice was to be effective immediately and stated the market makes the parking lot too crowded and vendors might be selling products that compete with leaseholders. Phil Brewer, economic development director for Cedar Park, negotiated a two-week extension for the farmers market for a final date at 1890 Ranch of May 15. On May 6, Carla Jenkins, LIBN, Clennan said city news relevant to residents will be found on the network along with any upcoming information about municipal and community issues. Special interest stories will also be part of the programming and could include interviews with local businesses on how day-to-day operations are run and what is involved in the store, Clennan said. LIBN can be found by going on the city’s website, www.leandertx.gov, clicking on the economic development department home page and scrolling to the bottom. Clennan said the city does have plans to add a button to different pages on the site, making it easier and more convenient to find the broadcast channel. Full story at more.impactnews.com/8004 market organizer for F2M Texas, joined city officials and Charlie Northington, principal of Endeavor, to negotiate the terms of the market’s future at 1890 Ranch. The market has met at 1890 Ranch since March 27. On opening day, 20 vendors sold products and more than 3,000 shoppers attended. Jenkins said about 50 vendors sold goods May 1 and about 4,000 people shop there every week. During negotiations, F2M Texas and Endeavor entered a new verbal agreement that states the farmers market will move directly behind Cinemark Theater and Endeavor will not terminate the agreement without notice. The new space will hold up to 65 vendors and is expected to help alleviate parking problems. Market visitors are encouraged to park away from storefronts, and vendors are barred from selling products that directly compete with those offered by 1890 Ranch tenants.
