Entrepreneurs CONTINUED FROM | 1 can show some initiative and build a business on their own skills or partner with others,” Clennan said. “That’s what we’ve been seeing throughout Williamson County.” Small businesses—defined by the Small Business Administration as having fewer than 100 employees—account for 98 percent of the businesses in Williamson County, according to the 2007 U.S. Economic Census. Fifty-four percent of the county’s 7,575 businesses have between one and four employees. The Wilco Entrepreneurs Community is a resource for new entrepreneurs looking to turn an idea into a profit and established business owners ready to take their company to the next level. Within the umbrella organization, there are several subgroups: Wilco Entrepreneurs Network, WEC University and Wilco Angel Network, aimed at connecting and educating new entrepreneurs and current business owners, as well as helping them secure funding for their ventures. “We’re trying to build an ecosystem to help entrepreneurs from zero to $1 million,” said Robert Felps, founder and director of WEC. Networking The Wilco Entrepreneurs Network consists of weekly meetings—held each Thursday in different cities in the 2010 Honoree Mr. John Garrett county—featuring two nights of business small talk each month, along with one guest speaker and one tutorial. Some of the network’s speakers have included St. Edward’s University adjunct marketing professor Patrick McCormick and Gary Hoover—founder of Bookstop and the business information company Hoover’s Inc. Phil Brewer, economic development director for Cedar Park, said city leaders throughout Williamson County have worked to boost business—no matter what city a company chooses. “There is more strength in working together than each city doing its own thing individually,” Brewer said. “We share in the mindset that in one of these communities, there could be another Michael Dell, the founder of Dell Inc. When you have a business like that, the whole region benefits.” Education Developed and led by Director Donna Fox and Associate Director Angela Griffiths, WEC University offers two hands-on training courses for CEOs of companies earning up to $1 million in annual revenue. Rapid Launch is a 12-week course for first-time CEOs and new businesses on how to start and operate a business. “Part of the goal of Rapid Launch is to take ideas, models and tools you might learn if you could take a year or two off to get an MBA and bring that to an entrepreneur who doesn’t have that luxury,” Fox said. Additional one-on-one coaching is also available. “In each class they’re learning specific things about planning and managing a business, and then they’re plugging in specifics about their business into this model,” Fox said. “At the end, not only do they know a lot more, but the CEO has a good understanding of the key things they need to do to be successful and they have a way to track that.” WEC University will offer a six-month Accelerator Lab to 20 companies poised to grow above $1 million in annual revenue. Participants are chosen through a selection process, and like Rapid Launch, the course will employ one-on-one coaching. Funding When it comes to starting or expanding a business, one of the obstacles entrepreneurs often face is finding money, which is where the Wilco Angel Network comes in. A nonprofit network of private investors focused on financing area businesses, WAN offers two levels of funding. Seed funding is typically for companies seeking less than $100,000 in loans, while angel funding allows for deals of more than $100,000 in equity, where investors become part owners in the business.
