A. and Lucy Kek, was born at Collins, Indiana, December 5, 1909. His father was a minister in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Evan entered Indiana Central College in September 1926, and was graduated with a major in history in 1930. Like many students of that period, he worked to pay a significant part of his college costs, which then averaged roughly $300 per semester for tuition, board, lodg- ing, andmiscellaneous items. Before gradu- ation he served two years as manager of the college bookstore. He also taught courses in history and economics, and received a master's degree in history from Indiana University in 1939. On December 12,1930, Evan married Anna Dale, who was graduated from Indi- ana Central in 1928. As an undergraduate shesewedassecretarytoPresident1.J. Good, and continued as such for a time thereafter until she became registrar. She also taught courses in Latin, and received a master's degree in Latin from Indiana University in 1935 and a doctorate in Latin from Cornel1 University in 1941. After travel in Europe in 19551956, the Keks served Davis and Elkins College, a Presbyterian-supported school at Elkins, West Virginia, in somewhat the same manner they had served Indiana Central College. From the mid-twenties until the mid- fifties Indiana Central College, sponsored by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, emergedfromits infancy. New buildings were erected and the campus was enlarged. Three individuals in particular contributed ably, generously, and sacrificially to the growth and augmented stature of Indi- ana Central College. They were: President I. J. Good, Evan R. Kek, and Anna Dale Kek. Many are the accounts from alumni of having payments delayed so they could remain in school, and of making payments in kind, even with potatoes and turnips. Not generally known is that on occasion Evan helped borrow money on his own security to pay salaries and other obligations. While in Florida in January of this year, I had the pleasure of a delightful visit with Evan and Anna Dale Kek. In Evan's death I lost a long and very valued friend. Also, graduates of Indiana Central College and the University of Indianapolis have lost one who contributed mightily to the advance- ment and quality of their alma mater. By DonaldE Camnony Emeritus F'rofessur of History Indiana Uniuersity Lisa Hicks to coach Lady Greyhound basketball team Lisa Hicks, women's basketball coach at Man- chester College, has been named to succeed the late Chuck Mallender as coach of the U of I women's basketball team. She comes to Indianapolis after an impressive five-year stint at Manchester, where she led the Spartans to an 82-52 record and four winning seasons, in the process becoming the winningest women's coach in the college's history. She becomes the fourth coach in the Lady Greyhounds' 1 5yearwomen's basketball history, succeed- ing Coach Chuck Mallender, who passed away during last season (seepage 15). Hicks guided her 1992-93 team to an 18-5 record for the school's best winning percentage ever. Her 1991-92 squad set a school mark with 21 victories, with her teams advancing to the NAIA playoffs the past two seasons. Under Hicks' leadership, Manchester received votes in both the NCAA I11 and NAIA national polls for the first time in school history.
1 Robert Vialpando '31 was awarded an Honorary Charter Membership for Out- standing Achievement in Poetry by the In- ternational Society of Poets. Mr. Vialpando has also written several books. He resides in Alcalde, New Mexico. Helen Kindred Peck '37 and her husband, Harold, ofCincinnati, celebrated their 50th anniversary in July 1992. They have two daughters, Susan and Priscilla, and three granddaughters. Harold Criswell'42 and his wife, Ola, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with afamilychurch gathering and adinner in the Marriott. The Criswellswere married on August 24,1943, in Campbellsburg. Ralph Coddington '43 and wife Esther '63 celebrated 50 years of marriage in an Open House Celebration October 3. They were married October 8, 1943. They have three children: Doretta Faust '69, Laona Emsweller '72, and J.M. Coddington. Elizabeth Richart Shierling '43 and husband Francis observed their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at the Winchester, Indiana, United Methodist Church on May 16,1993. Alice Gahman Waenson '43 and husband Gilbert celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 2 at the Clermont Chris tian Church. Carl L. Breeding '55, vice president of the NAACP, was in Indianapolis for the 84th annual convention of the NAACP during the month ofJuly. MaryrosePattonLynch'55was recently named Lake Central School Corporation's Teacher of theyear. Maryrose has 25 years of teaching experience and was thrilled to receive the award. She and her husband, Ronald, reside in Lowell, Indiana. Paul Velez '56 has retired from his position as principal of Greenwood Middle School after 37 years in education as a teacher, coach, counselor, and principal. Paul was a coach and teacher at U of I from 1962 to 1970. He and hiswife are moving to Orlando, Florida. He will be working at Disney World, continuing to workwith children, which he enjoys very much. William Raspberry '58 was recently named to the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame. The journalist was inducted in a ceremony held on April 3 at DePauw Uni- versity. Mr. Raspberry worked at the India- napolisRecordm asareporter, photographer, and editor from 1956 to 1960. He is a nationally syndicated columnist and mem- ber of the university Board of Trustees. John Johnson '58 is retiring from his position as principal of Zionsville Middle School after 35 years in the field of education. One aspect of his retirement will be additional timeatthegolfcourse, andwhen wife, Suzy'61, retiresinafewyears, theywill spend some time traveling. He and Suzy met on campus and married two years later. Martha Edmonds Bishop '62 was recently awarded two grants that were used to implement two telecommunication pre grams at the Bethel Middle School in Connecticut,where she is employed. The grants were used to enable students to communicatedwith other students around the world, through computers and modems, to exchange ideas and opinions. RichardHughes'63 was recentlyaguest lecturer at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. The setting for the lecture was the historic Gross Muenster Cathedral. While in Switzerland, Dr. Hughes received the Leopold Award for his book, The Return of the Ancestor. TiumanSnyder'67 has been appointed co-controller for Holm Industries Inc. He joined Pantasote Inc. in April 1974 and became anaccounting supervisorwith Holm in September 1990, at the time of the Holm- Pantasote acquisition. Richard D. Huey '67 recently received his doctorate in counseling psychology from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Dr. Huey is in private psychiatric practice in Virginia Beach. James A. Capps '69 was recently in the newsin St. Louis. Mr. Cappswasinstrumental in coordinating relief in the area for victims of the Mississippi River flooding. Mr. Capps is senior pastor at Bonhomme Presbyterian Church in Chesterfield. John E. Switzer '69 is one of three principals to open an independent exhibit management firm in South Bend, Indiana. ExhibitManagementInternational, Inc. has established offices and warehouse facilities in the Chippewa Business Center. Suzanne Green '70 an instructor of marketing and career development at Indiana Wesleyan University, recently spoke at a Greencastle Chamber of Commerce luncheon. She has been included in the most recent issue of Two Thousand Notable American Worn, and has received both the SerVaas Award and the Charlotte Danstrom Award as an outstanding entrepreneur. George F. Gordon '71 has joined the RA. Jones Co. of Cincinnati, a producer of high-speed packaging equipment, as coordinator of training and employment. JackWashburn'71 has been appointed principal at Stoneybrook Junior High School. Jack has been a teacher and administrator in the Warren Township Schools for 16 years. For the past six years, Mr. Washburn has been an assistant principal at Creston Junior High School. Jack is married and has two children, ages 17 and 22. Polly Horton Hix '72 was recently named to the Indianapolis Zoological Soci- ety board of directors. John Nonweiler '72, formerly a physi- cianwith Putnam Family Healthcare, is now with St. Vincent Hospitals and Health Ser- vices. The move will let him remain in his current location and allow more time to practice medicine, rather than take care of the business side of a family practice. David L. Bdock '74 has joined the Bloomington office of City Securities Corp. as a full-service account executive. He has 14 years experience in banking. Christopher R Brown '76 was a mem- ber of a delegation to Vietnam of practitie ners from nearly every field of health care. The mission ofthe delegationwas to present the management of people in chronic and acute pain. As a general dental practitie ner, he is involved in treating people with jaw joint disorders (TMJ), which cause se- vere headaches. He has been asked to return for a tweweek lecture series on head and facial pain in January 1994. Sandra Brown '76 received her 20-year service pin in April 1993 for her two decades with the Internal Revenue Service. A bank- ruptcy specialist, she lives in Indianapolis. Paul E. Easton '76 has been elected president of Greenfield Banking Company and Greenfield Bancshares, Inc., effective June 1993, by the corporation's board of directors. A 25year employee of the bank, he has served the bank as auditor, cashier, loan administrator, and personnel officer. In 1978 he was named executive vice president. He and his wife, Jenny, live in Greenfield, and have two grown children. Vicky Maddy '76 was recently recog- nized as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year at South School in Martinsville, Indi- ana. Vicky is a third grade teacher at the school, and has been teaching for 12 years. Deb Westerfield Smith '76 has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel for the US Army. She serves as assistant to the director of the Army Staff, Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army in the Pentagon. Her husband, Lieutenant Colonel James M. Smith, died in August of 1992. Lawrence Toombs '76/'80 has joined Geo. S. Olive & Co. as an executive manager for financial institution services in the Man- agement Consulting Services Department. David Wood '76/'79 was recently hired by the Pike Township School Board to teach physical education, business and health. He taught at U of I, and was teach- 11
