Trea is an occupational therapist, and Greg is a property manager. 14 Ruby Clark '27 passed away on July 28, 1992. She was a resident of Greenfield, Indiana. Annie McKenzie Good '28, of Minne- apolis, Minnesota, passed away on August 3, 1993. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Harry C. Good '25 (ICC basketball coach 1928-1943, and son of President Good). Also surviving are daughter, Sue Good Arndt; sons, Dr. Larry Good, Dr. Joe Good, and Bob Good; 14 grandchildren and 16 greatpndchildren. Wallace Blue Miner '29 passed away on Sunday, April 11,1993. He had taught at Indiana Central University, Indiana Uni- versity, Bradley University, and Northern Illinois University before retiring in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Clara Reppert Miner. Mary Elizabeth Woodward Merryman '30 died on May 13 in the Franklin United Methodist Home. She served on the execu- tive committee of Franklin United Method- ist Home Council and served on the University of Indianapolis Alumni Board. Albert Judd '32 died Monday, August 23. Mr. Judd had been a coach, teacher, and school administrator for 34 years, retiring in 1970. He was also avarsity basketball player for the University of Indianapolis. He is survived by his wife, Grace. Esther Bower '34 passed away Thurs- day, May 27,1993, in Fortville, Indiana. Miss Bower taught Spanish at Greenfield Cen- tral High School for 11 years, retiring in 1973. She also had taught Spanish, English, botany, and physical education at Fortville High School from 1937 to 1962. Verrollton C. Shad '36 died Sunday, August 8,1993. He had been a basketball coach and music teacher in Greensburg and New Salem before joining the Champaign Unit4 SchoolDistrictfacultyin 1945. Survivors include hiswife, WilmaJane Clifton Shaul. Orville Seal, husband of Naomi Crocker Seal '37, passed away on August 31,1993, in Brookville, Indiana. Marvin V. Oakes '38 died Saturday, February 13,1993, at Clark Memorial Hos- pital. He was a New Albany-Floyd County school administrator and cefounder of one of the first student radio stations in the United States. Survivors include wife Dor- othy Ann Conner Oakes. The Reverend Marshall W. Chambers '40 passed away Friday, August 6. For many years the much-loved director of Church Relations for the university, Dr. Chambers had served churches in South Whitley, Hammond, South Bend, Otterbein, and most recently at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lafayette. He retired in 1992. He was a member of the Northern Indiana Conference of the United Methodst Church, anda member of the United Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley Manor Retirement Community in Frankfort or to the University of Indianapolis. Survivors include wife Kathryn Nicodemus Mogle Chambers '41, former wife Maxine Black Chambers '42, son Samuel Chambers '73, and daughter Rebecca Chambers Axel '67. Edwin C. Johnson '52, passed away on Sunday, August 22, 1993, in Warner Robins, Georgia. He was a former resident of Kirklin, Indiana. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, serving 31 years and retiring in 1979 as a lieutenant colonel. Hany Willson '66, died Friday, August 27, 1993. Mr. Willson taught history and social studies for 20 years for Indianapolis Public Schools at schools 18 and 72 before retiring in 1986. Memorial gifts may be made to the Indianapolis Humane Society. Richard M. Gosney '72 of Greenfield died Tuesday, July 27,1993. He had been a sales representative 27yearsforU.S. Schwitzer, Inc. Survivors include wife Marilyn Lyons Gosney. James M. Smith, husband of Deb Westerfield Smith '76, passed away on August 15,1992. He had been a Lieutenant Colonel for the U.S. Army. Katy Wimmer, infant daughter ofJohn '79 and Jan Blaising Wimmer '79, died on June 24, 1993. John is an adjunct faculty member in Religion and Philosophy for University of Indianapolis. Katy was the granddaughter of Dr. Marus J. Blaising, assistant to the Bishop and amember of the Board of Trustees for U of I. Annette Savill '82 died Monday, May 10, 1993. Mrs. Savill was the first female officer of Indianapolis Power & Light Company. A certified public accountant, she had worked 14 years for IPL, retiring in 1987 as vice president and treasurer. Survivors include her husband, Victor Savill. Donald F. King '84 died Sunday, August 15,1993, at Indiana University Hospital. Mr. King worked two years at the Downtown L.S. Ayres Department Store. Previously he was an auditor several years for Cardinal Industries. Karen Lei Proctor '71, died Wednesday, May 12, 1993, at her home in Greenwood. She had been in a coma for the past two years as a result of an accident in Februaryof1991. ShehadbeenateacheratWebb Elementary School in Franklin for three years and had previously taught at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Indianapolis as well as a substitute teacher for several years for Center Grove Schools. Indiana General Assemblv honom Coach Mdender d Chuck Mallenh, the university S winningest women S basketball coach, has been honored post- humousEy b~ the Indiana General Assembly: WH€Ri%, Chuck Mallender, who died Monday, February 22,1993, spent the last 11 years coaching the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team to a 198-108 record and WEREAS, Mr. Mallender, who was 66 years old when he died, was married to his wife, Tina, for 43 years and had six children; and WERMS, Chuck was a dedicated husband and father; and WHEREAS, when his children became interested in sports, Mr. Mallender instituted youth football, baseball, softball, and basketball at the Baxter YMCA: WERE&, when Mr. Mallender's youngest daughter, Linda, became a member of the Southport High School girls' basketball team, Chuck tu- tored them, studying every tape and book he could find to make basketball fundamentals like a second language; and WHEREAS, the Southport girls' basketball team dedicated their 1980 state championship to him; and WERMS, Mr. Mallenderwillbe greatly missed by his family, friends, and the community. Twenty-seven years ago, I walked into Room 17 in Lilly Science Hall on the campus of Indiana Central College and came face to face with Roland Nelson for the first time. Our first meeting was anything but auspicious. As a matter of fact, within five minutes of walking into that classroom, my i classmates and I were on the verge of walkingbackout and marching to the registrar's office to drop our first graduate history class. Our reason? Within those first five minutes Dr. Nelson handed out the course syllabus! 1 For those ofyouwho hadRolandNelson as a teacher, I don't need to say anything more. For the rest of you, let me explain. Professor Nelson's syllabus included the following requirements: two "short" term papers of 610 pages each, two annotated bibliographies of at least 15 entries each, at least two oral presentations-not counting the almost daily debates and panel presentations, and three-well, maybe onlytwoessay exams-along with daily assignments from a text and a book of readings-all in a seven-week summer session! How unreasonable could a teacher be! We soon learned that the man we initially thought was so unreasonable was one of the most reasonable people we had ever met. This nonjudgmental, philosophical man with the marvelous wit guided, c e erced, and inspired us-the first graduate history students at Indiana Central Col- lege-through the new Master of Arts pre gram. He continually challenged us to become more thoughtful writers, better prepared speakers, more critical readers. And as is often the case when a master teacher works his magic in the classroom, he was successful much of the time. We simply didn't want to displease this man who had such high expectations of his students. And when we did succeed in any way-whether by writing a good critique of an article or surviving a debate with him- albeit battered and bruised-he was genu- inely pleased, as are all great teachers when their students learn to believe in their abili- ties and to achieve beyond their expectations. Roland Nelson worked tirelessly to make his classes fresh, relevant, and inter- esting-and maybe just a bit irreverent. Even his lectures were memorable. They might have been about the future . . . or about a day in the life of John Q. Peasant . . . or about the balance between liberty and control . . . or about the anatomy of a revolution . . . or my favorite, "presidents who might have been," but theywere always creative, oftenvery exciting, certainly never routine. They were sprinkled with anec- dotes that brought history to life, and they were seasonedwith awit thatwas as funny as it was brilliant. Dr. Nelson never took history or life-or himself-too seriously, and he was amused by those who did. As I have reminisced about the hours I spent in Roland Nelson's classroom, I re- called how much he relished a good debate about causation in history. He would lead us in probing into the reasons an event happened . . . its derivation, its advent. What gave it its impetus? What was the catalyst that brought it about? Why did the event occur at a particular time or place in history? And he was fascinated by the "what ifs" in history. What if some event had not occurred? What if Lincoln had not been shot? What if Henry Clay had been elected president? What if there had been no slavery in the South? In these last few days I've played the "why" and "what if" games Dr. Nelson taught me so well: Why did I choose to take his class in 1966? What unseen force took me to that place? What if I had turned around and walked out of his class that first day? I have no answers to any of these questions. I just know that on a day 27 years ago I met a man who became my teacher, colleague, and friend-and that knowing him has been one of the blessings of my life. I5
