was premiered at the highlands chamber music festival with the Vega string Quartet in 2006. motley also performed his compostion Suite Odyssey with the Vega string Quartet at carnegie hall in 2007. motley is director of jazz studies at emory university. he holds memberships with the national academy of recording arts and sciences, the american federation of musicians, and the national association for music education. rodney Whitaker, bass a member of detroit’s rich jazz tradition, bassist rodney thomas whitaker has emerged as a member of the world jazz community. solo recording artist and sideman, whitaker has made a name within the new vanguard of young jazzmen dedicated to furthering the traditions of earlier acoustic stylists. while other musicians have made their home in the coastal scenes of new york and los angeles, whitaker continues to reside in detroit, where he seeks musical inspiration and the comfort of family life. recording with an array of top talent and touring with such musicians as terence blanchard, bradford marsalis, and wynton marsalis, whitaker is contributing to the deep-rooted jazz world. devoted to creative personal statement rather than preservation, his music points to a future yielding new voices from the works of the great jazz founders. whitaker was born the son of James lee whitaker in detroit, michigan, on february 22, 1968. he grew up in the city soaking in the sounds of jazz/classical music and studying with the finest musicians in the city—marcus belgrave, kenneth cox, donald walden, randy Gelispie, stephen molina, robert Gladstone, francisco mora-catlett, alma smith, shahidah nurullah, and many, many others. building on his detroit roots and enormous talent, whitaker went on to earn an international reputation as one of the world’s finest jazz double bass performers. he completed a seven-year tenure as bassist with wynton marsalis sextet and the lincoln center Jazz orchestra. he has toured the world during the past twenty years, collaborating with legendary performers such as dianne reeves, mulgrew miller, diana krall, terence blanchard, kathleen battle, cyrus chestnut, Gerald wilson, carl allen, hank Jones, marian mcpartland, Johnny o’neal, kenny burrell, bob James, benny Golson, kenny Garrett, branford marsalis, the late John lewis, tommy flanagan, kevin mahogany, Jon carl hendricks, wycliffe Gordon, Jon faddis, Vanessa rubin, betty bebop carter, Jimmy cobb, curtis fuller, donald byrd, dizzy Gilispie, Johnny Griffin, Joshua redman, cassandra wilson, pat methany, chick corea, and roy hargrove, as well as with leading symphony orchestras. now based in east lansing, whitaker continues to remember his detroit roots, serving many of the city’s talented students as director of the detroit civic Jazz orchestra, musical director for jazz education at the detroit symphony orchestra, and director of the Jazz in the studio mentorship program and summer jazz camp in cooperation with the 4
arts league of michigan. he is on michigan state university’s faculty as director of jazz studies and professor of jazz bass and has built a leading jazz degree program and performing faculty, michigan state university professors of Jazz as the artistic director. his legacy of teaching promises to be distinguished, with former students currently performing with jazz greats such as wynton marsalis, dianne reeves, stephon harris, and many others. terreon “tank” gully, drums composer, arranger, producer, and musician extraordinaire, terreon Gully is one of the most influential artists of his time. Gully’s artistic uniqueness lies in his creativity, versatility, and authenticity. a versatile musician, he has mastered a variety of musical genres. by approaching each genre in its authentic context and incorporating various styles in an ingenious manner, Gully has created his own innovative and distinctive sound. Gully performs, tours, and records extensively. currently he is a member of and touring with the dianne reeves band and stefon harris and blackout. Gully also performs in a variety of genres and musical settings, working with the best. from jazz legends and modern masters to the hottest hip-hop icons, Gully has collaborated with many artists including the christian mcbride band, kurt elling, david sanborn, nicholas payton, Joe locke, Geoffrey keezer, kenny barron, the benny Green trio, Queen latifa, yerba buena, charlie hunter, abbey lincoln, marc cary, russell Gunn, lizz wright, Jacky terrasson, eldar, meshell ndegeocello, lauryn hill, and common, among others. in addition to live performances, Gully is known for his exceptional work in the studio, recording for albums, films, and commercials. Gully is originally from east st. louis, illinois. he developed his talent for more than ten years in new york city and currently lives in atlanta. a young, talented, and dedicated artist with a reputable character, Gully is the epitome of professionalism and musicianship. 5
