on behalf of the hundreds of Emory university students and the faculty and
staff who have had the distinct pleasure of calling this extraordinary space their
artistic home for the past ten years: a very warm welcome to this evening’s
celebratory performance. much has been written—articles, dissertations, and
entire books—on Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. it is a truly iconic work in the
canon of western art music and so clearly foreshadows other great works by
compositional titans such as Johannes Brahms and gustav mahler. This music,
in particular the choral Finale, has graced occasions that are veritable turning
points in human history such as german reunification and the tearing down
of the Berlin wall; it is the anthem for the European union; it is the consistent
cultural lightning rod for the universal themes of unity that are celebrated in
Johann friedrich Von Schiller’s text.
This is also the tenth anniversary of the premiere of the hymn for nations
united, premiered at The Hague, netherlands, and graciously selected for
inclusion this evening by Eric nelson as w. H. Auden’s poem dwells on not
dissimilar subject matter.
This performance of Beethoven’s work is both a testament to the meteoric
rise of the arts nurtured in this space and to Emory’s outward and visible
commitment to that mission. As we celebrate the previous ten seasons, may
this evening also be a foreshadowing of the decades to come.

emory university symphony orchestra
The Emory university Symphony orchestra (EuSo) experience provides a
musical environment of the highest caliber, nurturing individual artistic
excellence and ensemble performance. The EuSo presents a varied repertoire
of music from the Baroque period to the twenty-first century, often combining
forces with the Emory choirs to feature masterworks of the rich symphonicchoral
tradition. The one hundred-member orchestra draws its membership
from all disciplines across the campus and from all divisions of the university.
Richard Prior, conductor
richard Prior’s musical training began in his native England,
where he received a BA with high honors from Leeds
university and an AmusD degree in conducting and
composition from nottingham university. He has been
reviewed in the press as having “stirring conviction,”
“precision,” and “stylishness and flexibility,” with one article
citing the “meteoric rise” of ensembles under his direction.
Prior’s principal teachers include Sir Simon rattle, James
Paul, and James fulkerson. Previous faculty appointments include oklahoma
State university (oSu), Southeastern Louisiana university, Davidson College,
franklin and marshall College, and St. Catherine’s College (oxford university),
where he was the 1997 visiting fellow in music. Prior is director of orchestral
studies at Emory where he conducts the university and youth symphonies and is
also music director and conductor of the rome Symphony orchestra (georgia).
Prior was a selected participant in the 2001 Pierre Boulez Professional
Training workshop at Carnegie Hall (new York) and the 2002 Conductors’
workshop of America. He was the recipient of the oSu 2003 wise-Diggs-Berry
faculty Award for Teaching Excellence in the Arts and the 2004 golden Torch
faculty Award for outstanding Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. in 2008,
Prior won the Harvey Philips Award for Excellence in Composition, presented
at the Cincinnati Conservatory of music for his work diversions. He was the
2009–2010 recipient of Emory university’s winship faculty Award and the
2011 Crystal Apple Award for Excellence in undergraduate Education.
in demand as an adjudicator and clinician, Prior has conducted numerous
honor and all-state orchestras and led a variety of professional consortiums
from the new York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, and
minnesota orchestra. He has appeared with the Charlotte Symphony, the
new orleans Civic Symphony, the rome Symphony orchestra, and the odessa
Philharmonic (ukraine). He holds memberships in the American Symphony
orchestra League, the Conductors guild, Bmi, the georgia music Educators
Association, the national Association for music Education, Phi mu Alpha Sinfonia,
and Kappa Kappa Psi. Prior is a founding member and past president of the
College orchestra Directors Association, South Central Division, and he serves
on the Atlanta regional Commission’s Arts and Culture Assessment Committee.

Highly active as a composer, his music has been performed, recorded,
and broadcast widely in Europe and north America. His works for choir,
orchestra, wind ensemble, and chamber ensembles have been successfully
performed and recieved at national and international conventions ranging
from Chicago to norway and Portugal; he was composer in residence for the
2003 Association for music in international Schools festival (AmiS) at The
Hague in the netherlands. Performances at Emory have included the string
quartet intimations of immortality, premiered by the Vega String Quartet on
the 2008 flora glenn Candler Concert Series; The Darkening Land with the
Atlanta Youth wind Symphony and clarinet virtuoso richard Stoltzman; and
the Pulitzer-nominated choral-orchestral work Stabat Mater, the subject of a
2009 PBS special. Prior’s Symphony no. 3 received its premiere on march 3,
2011, with the Emory university Symphony orchestra and his elegy for aurora,
dedicated to the memory of the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, received multiple
regional performances in fall 2012. Current projects include works for the
Atlanta Symphony orchestra; Elizabeth Koch Tiscione, principal oboist of the
ASo; and a second quartet for the Vega String Quartet. The hymn for nations
united was a recipient of Awards of merit in two categories (Symphonic music
and Composition) in this year’s global music Awards.
emory university chorus
open to all Emory university students as well as to members of the Emory
community, the university Chorus holds a unique place in Emory life. music
majors and nonmajors, undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff,
parents and their children, workers and retirees, alumni and neighbors, all come
together to rehearse each monday night, united by their common love of singing.
in fall 2012, the chorus joined forces with the Emory wind Ensemble in a
performance of ola gjeilo’s Meridian and a medley of Disney favorites arranged
by Scott Stewart. Along with the Emory Concert Choir, they also presented
the annual A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols concert, an Atlanta holiday
tradition attended by three thousand people in glenn Auditorium.
Eric Nelson, director
Eric nelson is director of choral studies at Emory, where he
conducts the Emory Concert Choir and the Emory university
Chorus. He also teaches graduate choral conducting,
methods, and literature. nelson is artistic director of the
Atlanta Sacred Chorale, a professional chamber choir singing
sacred a cappella repertoire, and the minister of music at the
historic 2nd-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta.
nelson has conducted choirs throughout north America
and Europe, including performances in London, rome, Krakow, Berlin, Leipzig,
Prague, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Sydney opera House. His
choirs have appeared at six American Choral Directors Association (ACDA)

conventions, including the Concert Choir’s performance at Chicago’s orchestra
Hall for the national Convention in 2011 and the Atlanta Sacred Chorale’s
performance in winston-Salem for the Southern regional Convention in 2012.
His ensembles have been praised for their ability to combine a high level of
technical precision with warmth of musical expression.
nelson’s compositions have been sung by choirs throughout the united
States, including performances for the ACDA, the music Educators national
Conference, the Association of Lutheran Church musicians, the Presbyterian
Association of musicians, and for numerous churches, colleges, and universities.
He is past president of the georgia chapter of the ACDA and is the recipient of
a Crystal Apple Award for excellence in teaching at Emory and the American
Prize in choral conducting. He has degrees in voice and conducting from
Houghton College, westminster Choir College, and indiana university.
maria valdes, soprano, has been praised for her sophisticated musicianship,
natural tonal beauty, and ease of singing. She has been heard in music from
Haydn and mozart to living composers frank Ticheli and John Lane and Allen
otte. Valdes graduated from georgia State university where she was a choral
scholar and winner of the Brumby Concerto Competition, singing Samuel
Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915. She won first place in her division in the
georgia national Association of Teachers of Singing vocal competition four
years in a row. She is a member of the voice studio of richard Clement.
tabitha iwamoto, a Brazilian mezzo soprano, has a Bm in voice performance
from university of São Paulo, Brazil. She also has a mm in voice performance
from georgia State university and has been singing concerts, opera, and recitals
in Europe, united States, and Brazil. iwamoto recently participated in a recital
with renowned soprano Lauren flanigan in new York, and she was Poppea in
monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea in novafeltria and montegridolfo (italy).
Bradley howard, tenor, is director of vocal studies at Emory. with a career
spanning the classical and modern choral works, solo recitals, and operatic
roles, Howard’s concert engagements include Beethoven’s ninth Symphony,
Andrew Lloyd webber’s Requiem, weill’s Seven Deadly Sins, mozart’s Requiem,
Haydn’s Creation, mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, and Handel’s Messiah and Saul,
among others. Howard’s solo recitals have been heard across the united States.
Jason hardy, bass, has given numerous performances at Carnegie Hall,
including mozart’s Requiem and Ein Deutches Requiem by Brahms, both under
the baton of John rutter. He has performed song repertoire and vocal chamber
works ranging from Purcell to Prokofiev at the prestigious marlboro music
festival. He has presented recitals nationwide under the auspices of the marilyn
Horne foundation, including a debut recital at Carnegie’s weill Hall, where
he performed the world premiere of John musto’s viva sweet love. Hardy has
released his first solo CD, Youth and Love, which is available online.

The Joel M. Felner, MD, and Edward Goodwin Scruggs Chairs
The two named chairs, concertmaster and principal second violin, are in
recognition of gifts-in-kind to the Emory university Symphony orchestra in the
value of $317,000. Joel m. felner is associate dean at the Emory university
School of medicine; Edward goodwin Scruggs was for thirty-seven years a
tenured member of the Atlanta Symphony orchestra. The lives of both men
represent distinguished careers and great philanthropy as patrons of the arts
and friends of Emory university. The concertmaster plays a 1687 grancino and
the principal second performs on an 1870 Scarampella.

internationally recognized artists and researchers, our undergraduate and
graduate students experience a rich diversity of performance and academic
opportunities. undergraduate students in our department earn a BA in music
with a specialization in performance, composition, or research, many of whom
simultaneously earn a second degree in another department. True to the spirit
