<strong>The</strong> Exchange Club <strong>Family</strong> Support Center in Downey received a<br />

donation of 29 gingerbread houses on Dec. 20 for the agency’s annual<br />

holiday Adopt-a-<strong>Family</strong> program. <strong>The</strong> decorated treats were made by<br />

Ellie Wilson, a former Exchange Club client. “Ellie never forgot the<br />

help she and her daughters received from the center more than 15<br />

years ago, and wanted to make this gift for other families in need,” the<br />

center said. Pictured above are Ellie, her husband Chuck and<br />

Exchange Club assistant director Christina Ambrosino.<br />

a ribbon-cutting ceremony Dec. 9 with the Downey Chamber of<br />

Fitness boot<br />

camp starts<br />

in January<br />

camp, appropriate for all ages and<br />

fitness levels, begins Jan. 5 at<br />

Downey Adult School.<br />

<strong>The</strong> boot camp is fun and nonconfrontational.<br />

It is led by Carl<br />

Causly, a certified personal trainer<br />

and group exercise instructor.<br />

<strong>The</strong> class combines dumbbells,<br />

kickboxing, exercise bands, plyometrics,<br />

obstacle courses and group<br />

challenges.<br />

Participants should bring a<br />

padded exercise mat, towel, 8-10<br />

pound dumbbells and water.<br />

Cost is $32 for the 4-week class<br />

and meets Wednesdays from 4:30-<br />

5:30 p.m. or Saturdays from 8-9<br />

a.m. <strong>The</strong> Wednesday course begins<br />

Jan. 5 and the Saturday class Jan. 8.<br />

Crime Report<br />

Wednesday, Dec. 22<br />

At about 10:50 a.m., an armed robbery occurred at the Metro PCS<br />

store located at 7814 Florence Avenue. <strong>The</strong> suspect brandished a<br />

black revolver and demanded money. <strong>The</strong> clerk complied and the suspect<br />

fled in a vehicle.<br />

At 9:45 p.m., an officer recovered a stolen vehicle that was parked in<br />

the 12500 block of Rose Avenue. Utilizing the new License Plate<br />

Recognition (LPR) technology, the system automatically alerted the<br />

officer of the stolen vehicle as he drove past it during normal patrol.<br />

<strong>The</strong> vehicle had earlier been reported stolen out of the city of<br />

Lakewood.<br />

Thursday, Dec. 23<br />

Just after 2 a.m., a strong-arm street robbery occurred in the 12800<br />

block of Lakewood Boulevard. <strong>The</strong> victim was walking north when<br />

the suspect approached from the opposite direction. <strong>The</strong> suspect<br />

frightened the victim into giving up her cellular phone.<br />

At around 5 a.m., a robbery with a firearm occurred in the 8500 block<br />

of Rives Avenue. <strong>The</strong> two victims were seated in their parked car<br />

when two males drove up and approached them while brandishing<br />

guns. <strong>The</strong> suspects stole car keys, a cell phone and a driver’s license<br />

before fleeing in their vehicle.<br />

At 11:20 p.m., a 34-year-old male from Cudahy was assaulted at the<br />

front of George’s restaurant located in the 7800 block of Florence<br />

Avenue. <strong>The</strong> male had been removed from the restaurant for excessive<br />

drunkenness and was awaiting a cab when another patron struck him<br />

in the face. <strong>The</strong> subject fell and struck his head where he sustained a<br />

skull fracture.<br />

Friday, Dec. 24<br />

Around 3:00 a.m. fire and police personnel responded to the arson of<br />

a vehicle in the area of Old River School Road and Rundell Street.<br />

<strong>The</strong> car had been stolen from the city of Paramount and then intentionally<br />

burned in our city.<br />

Saturday, Dec. 25<br />

At 2:40 a.m., a single-car hit & run collision occurred at the intersection<br />

of Stewart & Gray and Rives. <strong>The</strong> driver struck and damaged the<br />

traffic signal pole before driving off. Officers were able to locate the<br />

vehicle quickly and arrested the driver for drunk driving and hit &<br />

run.<br />
