Incumbents were an endangered
night in Bladenboro as the two
seeking re-election to their town
council seats were defeated.
In Bladenboro’s Ward 1,
challengers Everett Butler and
with 151 and 133 votes, respectively.
They knocked out the
Others receiving votes included
Ashley Singletary with
115 votes, Rufus Duckworth
White Oak
man pleads
guilty to
receiving
child porn
Staff report
A 52-year-old White Oak man
entered a plea of guilty this week
in federal court to a child pornography
charge, and now faces up to
20 years in prison.
Andrew F. Hood, who investigators
found with thousands of
pornographic photographs of children
on his computers, was convicted
Monday of receiving child
pornography, according to Thomas
G. Walker with the U.S. Attorney’s
Office.
Hood will face sentencing on
the charge in February.
According to the investigation,
while conducting undercover operations
of peer-to-peer sharing of
child pornography via the Internet,
it was discovered that Hood was
logging onto several known child
pornography sites. On Feb. 15,
2011, a search warrant was executed
at Hood’s residence where
two desktop computers, several
external hard drives, multiple
recordable CDs and a handwritten
ledger listing file names were
seized.
Forensic analysis of the computers,
hard drives and CDs revealed
16,673 photos of child
pornography and 227 videos.
At sentencing in February, in
addition to the 20 years’ imprisonment
followed by up to five years’
supervised release, Hood faces a
fine of up to $250,000. If Hood has
had prior convictions that relate to
sexual abuse or the production,
possession, receipt, mailing, sale,
distribution, shipment or transportation
of child pornography, he
faces up to 40 years imprisonment
with up to a life-term of supervised
release.
Investigation of this case was
conducted by the North Carolina
State Bureau of Investigation and
the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
■ This case was part of the
Project Safe Childhood initiative,
a national program aimed at ensuring
that criminals exploiting children
are effectively prosecuted by
making full use of all available law
enforcement resources at every
level. For information about this
FRIDAY
November 11, 2011
Page 4A
EDITORIAL ...
HEEREʼS WHAT WE THINK
Giving
thanks
The old adage that “war is hell” has
touched millions upon millions of
American men, women and
children since this country was
created 235 years ago. And for many of
those, the hell they faced in action
carried over into their peacetime lives.
It is an experience that, for those who
have not endured it, is unimaginable.
This is a month of thanksgiving —
because of that, and for what our military
men and women have provided and
protected for us, we owe them a debt of
gratitude.
At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, a
temporary cease fire occurred that was
the beginning of the end of World War I,
called "the war to end all wars."
Unfortunately, this was not the case.
Since that time, the United States
fought in “The Big One” — World War II;
in the “police action” of the Korean War;
in Vietnam; and in the Middle East.
Each conflict has involved men and
women on the front lines, in various
capacities as part of the military. These
are our veterans.
Although it is
important to
show our
gratitude every
chance we get
for the
sacrifices our
veterans have
made over the
years, today it
is especially
important that
our voice of
support be
heard the
loudest.
When the soldiers
came home from
World War I and
World War II, there
were celebrations
that spanned a
nation. But with
each succeeding
conflict, the
celebrations
became more and
more private,
particularly if the
wars were less and
less popular among
the citizens.
As the older
soldiers died off who
served in World War
I, the legacy we
have from that conflict is Veterans Day.
And with that observance should also
bring remembrances for those who took
part in any military action from the
Revolutionary War and Civil War through
Afghanistan and Iraq.
Although it is important to show our
gratitude every chance we get for the
sacrifices our veterans have made over
the years, today it is especially important
that our voice of support be heard the
loudest.
You can show that support for our men
and women in the military by flying the
American flag and, if possible, attending
a Veterans Day observance.
Mr. Vincent goes to Washington
T
his past weekend, I did what
every American citizen should
do at least once in their adult
life — visit Washington, D.C.
It’s been about 40 years since I last
visited our nation’s capital
— a trip with my
grandparents, and about
all I really remember is
the blooming cherry blossoms
— but the Washington
I walked this time
was far different than the
one I saw in 1971.
What was evident
from the start was the fact
that what caught my at-
tention as a 15-year-old is
vastly different from what
I noticed four decades
later. Back then, aside
from the cherry blossoms,
the things I noticed were
the policemen on horseback, street vendors
and the agony of climbing the 897
steps to the top of the Washington
Monument. This time, I noticed so
much more — including the first black
squirrels I’d ever seen.
My hotel was located on F Street,
with George Washington University’s
south boundary to the north and the
icons of American history scattered
within walking distance everywhere
else.
My first adventure was a self-guided
walking tour of the GWU campus. Like
any college grounds on a late Saturday
afternoon, the sidewalks were teaming
with students, and I couldn’t help but
think just how fortunate these young
folks were to be getting educated in the
heart of perhaps the most historical city
in the country, surrounded by block
after block of gargantuan marble buildings
all just a handful of streets from
the most powerful office in the world.
A walk through Washington Circle,
located up near the Foggy Bottom area
of the campus, quickly showed some of
the underbelly of Washington, as the
park was littered with homeless men
who were getting ready to stake out
their spots for the evening.
Then it was on to the south, where
the White House was getting shrouded
in shadows as the sun began to set. But
first, just east of the president’s home,
was the White House Gift Shop —
where there was everything imaginable
for purchase, including a replica presidential
desk in a makeshift Oval Office
where you can have your
photo taken for $5.
Being a Civil War enthusiast,
as well as an
Abraham Lincoln fan, I
looked carefully through
a number of marble and
metal replicas of the 16th
president. But when I got
close to settling on one, I
happened to look at the
bottom — and right
there, in black lettering,
were the words MADE
IN CHINA.
I left without spending
a single Lincoln penny.
Pennsylvania Avenue
is a busy place, night or day. On this
particular evening, numerous folks
were pressed against the fence aiming
their cameras and cell phones at the
now lit up White House for photographs.
It was here that you really
began to hear the many different dialects
of people. A couple were recognizable,
a few were not.
I happened to ask Officer Fields, a
Secret Service member (Uniform Division)
who was out on the street that
evening, where the Occupy Washington,
D.C., group was, and he said they
liked to move around. I would manage
to stumble upon them the next day.
But one protest that was clearly visible
along Pennsylvania Avenue, straight
across from the White House’s front
door, was the White House Anti-Nuclear
Peace Vigil. It’s a single tent on
the edge of Lafayette Park with a large
sign on either side and manned — or
womanned — by a single person 24/7.
And it’s been there since Aug. 1, 1981.
It is the longest continuous act of political
protest in the United States.
Inside the tent that night was Concepcion
Picciotto, a woman who has
been there since Day One and is now
approaching her 80s. Her story, if you
care to Google her, is incredible.
Later that evening, I was fortunate
enough to find myself at a table in Old
Ebbitt Grill, a restaurant a couple of
blocks from the White House that has
been open since 1856. What an amazing
place, and I spent three hours (one
of them at one of their four bars waiting
for the table) wondering just who might
have stepped inside during those 155
years and had a meal. Grant? Lincoln?
Roosevelt? Kennedy? Reagan?
The next day, because I didn’t have
my camera with me on my first trip, I
traveled much the same route as I had
the night before, minus the GWU campus
and adding the Lincoln Memorial
and search for Occupy Washington,
D.C., site. It was incredible how different
the area looked in the light of day.
The Lincoln Memorial was my No.
1 mission for the weekend, and I wasn’t
disappointed. For me, there is no other
place in the entire city that is as awe-inspiring
as the sight of Lincoln in his
chair gazing out across the Reflecting
Pool toward the Washington Monument.
The man saved the country, plain
and simple.
And then there was the Occupy
Washington, D.C., group — so many
tents and people packed into McPherson
Square, just a few blocks from the
White House. It was like a mini community
filled with college students right
through elderly hippie types. But what
really disappointed me was that, when I
asked two college students why they
were there, I was told “We wanted to be
a part of it.” And when I asked one of
the older folks what Occupy wanted, he
said, “I’m not really sure. I just wanted
to come support it.”
There were also pockets of other
protests woven into the Occupy group,
which in my mind tended to water
down the bigger picture.
All in all, my trip to Washington
was educational, therapeutic and
mostly memorable on a number of levels.
I found it very difficult to leave.
And ohhhhh, would I have loved to
have had a fireside chat with the president.
Maybe next time.
Public
ELIZABETHTOWN
— The Bladen County Board
of Commissioners voted Monday
to schedule a public hearing
regarding the proposed
purchase of the Bay Tree
Lakes Water System. That
public hearing is scheduled for
Monday, Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m.
in the Commissioners Meeting
Room located in the basement
of the Bladen County Courthouse
in Elizabethtown.
Also, in a related matter, the
board voted in favor of a resolution
authorizing the filing of
an application for the approval
of financing for the purchase
of the Bay Tree Lake water
system. According to The
Fayetteville Observer, the projected
cost is about $400,000
with an additional $220,00 for
the construction of a new water
line along N.C. 41.
The purchase of this system,
if financing is approved,
will add about 165 customers
to the county’s water system
and is projected to generate
about $52,830 in annual revenue
to the county.
In other business:
•The board approved a resolution
revising the election
districts for Bladen County. A
public hearing was held at the
last meeting. The changes will
include Baldwin Branch moving
from District 2 to District 1
and Happy Valley will move
from District 2 to District 3.
• The board approved an
agreement with Cape FearValley
Health System approving
an EMS Medical Director
agreement. County Manager
Greg Martin said the agreement
basically allows the person
hired as EMS director to
be stationed at the hospital.
• Bladen County Tax Administrator
Chris Ellis updated
the commissioners on the sell
of surplus properties. Martin
said three properties have been
sold at auction but about 14
properties remain. Ellis requested
the board’s permission
to continue with the sell of the
WENT IN FOR PACEMAKER SURGERY.
NOW, JUST TRY AND KEEP UP WITH HIM.
Earlier this year, Rudy wasn’t his usual talkative self. “I kept trying to say something, but nothing
would come out,” he recalls. A visit with Dr. Short of Duke Cardiology of Lumberton revealed
Rudy was having a series of mini-strokes and needed a pacemaker. After surgery at Southeastern
Heart Center, Rudy is back to his youthful enthusiasm and energy. If you see him on the Lumber
county A 100-mile walk for veterans that began in
Wilmington on Monday, Nov. 7, will come to an
end today at the Airborne and Special
Operations Museum in Fayetteville. At left, Mark
Mosher and Mack Coyle, Marine veterans, stand
Coyle has invented a solar trailer with outlets
for operating equipment and charging many
electrical apparatus. Both have the same goal
— to encourage vets to begin small businesses
and become involved with veterans in their
Bladen churches unite: Being healthy, being faithful 2012
ELIZABETHTOWN — Joy
Williams of Partners in Health and
Wholeness, a Christian-based organization,
will collaborate with
churches and the parish nurse on
Monday, Nov. 28, at 5:30 p.m. in
the fellowship hall of Elizabethtown
Presbyterian Church at 800
W. Broad St. (across from the Municipal
Building), to make local
churches healthier for the glory of
God.
Each year in North Carolina,
thousands of people die of preventable
diseases and almost 1.5
million North Carolinians cur-
love puzzles. Crosswords,
brainteasers, and search-awords
to be sure, but nothing
beats an old fashioned
jigsaw puzzle with about gazillion
pieces spilling out of the
box.
Right now there is a monstersized
puzzle strewn across our
family’s dining room table. I
have been persistently working
on it for so long that I can’t remember
the last evening we ate
dinner at the table.
My family has learned not to
monkey around with me while I
am hip-deep in puzzle solving.
Yes, assist me – I’ll take all that I
can get – but don’t walk by and
offer advice or a litany of critiques
unless you are willing to
give the pieces a try yourself.
Time, patience, and the right
kind of help: These are the requirements
for solving puzzles,
even puzzles of faith.
Sometimes when I lead retreats
my love for puzzles spills
over into the program. I divide
the participants into small
groups and give each group a
children’s puzzle to complete.
The only catch is this: While
most puzzles are brand new in
the box, I have tampered with
one of the puzzles.
The puzzle in
question will have a
handful of wrong
pieces mixed in, or
if I am feeling sinister,
I will have replaced
the puzzle
altogether, the
pieces not matching
the picture on the
box at all. The
group with the
jacked-up puzzle
will pour the pieces
out, start working
the edges, looking
at the picture on the
box, and after a few minutes,
they will be completely bamboozled.
“Everybody else is almost
finished,” I hear them say.
“What is wrong with us? Why
won’t the pieces fit together?
How is that we can’t make the
puzzle look like the picture?”
When I reveal the dirty truth,
they wail and protest, complaining
that the assignment was unfair.
“Ah,” I say.
“Such is life and
faith. Sometimes
the puzzle doesn’t
match the box we
were given. Sometimes
the pieces
don’t fit together at
all.”
I’ve met a legion
of people who
begin their walk of
faith and everything
goes as it “should.”
They go to church,
learn stuff from the
Bible, volunteer,
serve, give, and become
“productive, committed,
faithful, Christians” – whatever
that is supposed to mean. But
then these good soldiers go
through a divorce; or they are
mistreated by a religious organization,
or lose their career.
Nov. 18
■ A Released Time
benefit will be held on
Friday, Nov. 18, from 5 to
7 p.m. at the Bladenboro
Historical Building. An
auction will begin at 6
p.m. The event will consist
of an auction, barbecue
plates and bake
sale. Barbecue plates
cost $6 each. Various
items will be auctioned
and wide variety of
cakes will be for sale. All
proceeds go to Released
Time Ministries so they
can expand their ministry
into more schools. For
information, contact
Nov. 19
■ Piney Grove Missionary
Baptist Church of
Council will have a Fall
Festival of Music on Sat-
Maybe their child gets sick or
their spouse dies.
The result is much more than
the proverbial “crisis of faith” – I
have one of those every Monday
morning. No, it is much deeper,
more life-altering and foundation-shaking
than that. The answers
they used to rely upon, the
faith that formerly sustained
them, no longer works. The fitlypaired
pieces of the puzzle go
scattering in the wind.
Often the only thing others
can say in those moments is,
“Well, pray longer! Try harder!
Read this book I found. Clean up
the sin in your life.” Such advice,
beyond being asinine, will
not work, because once one discovers
that the puzzle of life no
longer matches the picture they
had imagined, it is impossible to
pretend otherwise.
What is the answer to these
miss-fitted and missing pieces
puzzles of life and faith? Time,
patience, and a little help. Time
and patience to keep working it
out and to sift through the pre-
urday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m.
Several choirs, groups
and soloists will be on
program. Contact the
Rev. Janet Cherry at
910-645-6421 for more
information.
Baptist Church will have
during the 11 a.m. worship
service. Dinner will
be served following the
morning worship service.
will be served at 1:30
p.m. and services will
continue with 3 p.m. afternoon
service. The
guest will be the Rev.
Samuel C. Blanks, pastor,
Shady Grove AME
Zion Church of Council.
Talkin’
NASCAR
Closing
time
FRIDAY
Nov. 11, 2011
Page 1B
During a discourse, the
definitive final punctuation
mark – the closer, so to
speak – is a period. It denotes the
end of the sentence; subject
closed.
But while much of the speculation in the
days following the Tums Fast Relief 500 at
Martinsville Speedway centered on just two
drivers, the period is not yet placed. This
conversation is far from over.
The first driver under discussion was Carl
Edwards, who maintained the lead in the
Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup driver
standings heading into the November 4-6
race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway by
8 points. Despite having earned no victories
so far in the 10-race postseason playoff, Edwards
had led the field thanks to his consistency;
he finished in the top 10 in six of the
seven races leading up to Texas, and posted
an average finish of 6.1. Week to week,
those are hard numbers to beat.
The second driver in the conversation was
Tony Stewart. Stewart has made it difficult
for Edwards, or anyone else for that matter,
to win a Chase race this season, since prior
to Texas, he had visited Victory Lane in
three of the seven races already run. Still,
those three victories propelled him to only
second place in the driver standings.
While four or five guys could still theoretically
win the title, many so-called “realistic”
people believe that our eventual 2011
champion will be one of these two front-running
drivers.
Not so fast. If NASCAR was a two-horse
race, things would be awfully quiet on Sunday
afternoons. And a third driver, who apparently
is not a believer in foregone
conclusions, has inserted his foot firmly in
the door and intends to not only pry it open
and walk through it, but to shut and lock it
behind him.
Kevin Harvick, who moved from fifth to
third in the driver standings thanks to a
fourth-place finish at Martinsville and trailed
Edwards by 21 points headed to Texas, said,
“The goal is just to keep chipping away at
the lead. We got a little behind at Talladega,
but we just gotta keep doing what we’re
doing. We’ve got three to go, and we’re
closer now then we were last week.”
By his own admission, Harvick was
thrust into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
spotlight a little too soon, taking over the renumbered
No. 29 Richard Childress Racing
Chevy in February 2001 after the passing of
Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Assuming NASCAR’s most famous and
beloved seat is the most stressful measure of
a man’s mettle imaginable, but Harvick
came through. In only his third race as a fulltime
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competitor,
he went to Victory Lane at Atlanta, and
to date, has amassed 18 wins in NASCAR’s
premier series, including four this season.
He has also shown himself willing to put
his money where his mouth – and his heart –
is. Not content to be one of those drivers
who just shows up at the track when it’s time
to go racing, Harvick, along with his wife
DeLana, has over the years invested and
won driver and owner championships in
both the NASCAR Nationwide and
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Harvick has represented his sport well in
many ways, but if you asked him, he might
say he still hasn’t represented it in the way
that matters most to him – as the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series champion. He is determined
to make that happen. “I am all for
doing whatever you have to do to win the
championship,” he said in an interview after
Martinsville.
This “by any means necessary” attitude
may result in some late-season fireworks. In
addition to being a brilliant and aggressive
driver, Harvick is also known to be outspoken
and honest to the point of brashness,
Bladen High last met Jordan-Matthews
High in the third round of the Class 2-
A playoffs in 2009 and were forced to
fight for a 14-8 win at home. It’s the
second round this time around, but Eagles
coach Lenon Fisher is expected
much the same kind of game.
“Oh yeah, they’re tough,” he said.
“They’ve always had a good program.”
Over the past six seasons, the Jets
have compiled a 56-20-1 record. But
this season, they come into the second
round with a 7-5 mark after upsetting a
9-2 Randalman High team in the first
round, 8-7, and breaking the Tigers’
eight-game win streak. They will be
facing a second straight 9-2 team in
East Bladen on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Eagles will be looking for their
sixth straight season with at least 10
wins — they have a 70-13 mark in that
time.
Jordan-Matthews is the No. 4 team
out of the Mid-State Conference and
boasts a handful of players that will
give East Bladen a challenge.
Coach Marty Scotten said his team’s
strength is its lines, and players like
senior Clifton Brooks (5-foot, 11
inches, 305 pounds) and junior Will
Cockman (6-6, 320 pounds) provide
the anchors for those lines.
“Their defense is probably one of
the best in the state,” Fisher said. “They
are big and physical, and I’m not really
sure how we will block them.”
The Jets defense, which operates out
of the 52, 53 and 55, has given up just
199 points over the 12 games.
They also have a talented kicker in
Michael Bartolo, a speedy scatback in
Alan Barnwell, along with a quarterback
who can run or throw.
Jordan-Matthews runs its offense
MALIK CROMARTIE
out of a spread shotgun formation, as
well as the Wing-T with the quarterback
under center or in the shotgun.
The Jets have scored 196 points this
season.
East Bladen managed to survive last
week’s 25-21 win over Providence
Grove High in a downpour without sustaining
any lasting injuries.
Common opponent
Jordan-Matthews faced North
Brunswick High, a Waccamaw Conference
foe of East Bladen’s, on Oct. 21
in Siler City and handed the Scorpions
a tough 7-6 loss.
The Eagles, in the regular-season finale
on Oct. 28, went to Shallotte with
the conference’s No. 1 seed on the line
and beat North Brunswick, 20-6, with a
13-point surge in the second half to finish
the conference schedule at 5-1.
PREP BASKETBALL
holiday tournament
The boys bracket
The Eagles will open the
tournament on Tuesday,
Dec. 20, at 4 p.m. against
Heidi Trask High.
A win would send East
Bladen into the second
round against the winner of
the East Carteret High versus
Union High winner at 7
p.m. on Wednesday, Dec.
21.
A loss in the first round
would pit East Bladen
against the loser of the East
Carteret-Union matchup in
the loser’s bracket on
Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 4
p.m.
*Cromartie: Tabbed
for MEAC honors
tercepted a pass in the end
zone close to halftime and
picked off his second pass
of the day inside the Eagles’
5-yard-line in the second
half.
*Elliott:
Harvick
is sneaky
willing to spar both on and
off the track. Although this
has made him wildly popular
with fans, he certainly
doesn’t walk through the
garage trailed by a crowd of
butterflies and bunnies; there
are a couple of more predatory
animals hanging around
there, too. He is polarizing.
He’s also rather sneaky.
On numerous occasions,
when races appeared to be
all but won by another
driver, he has miraculously
come from behind in the
final laps to take the checkered
flag, putting the period
on the sentence and earning
him the nickname, “The
Closer.”
Unless you’re an aficionado
of Kyra Sedgwick’s
hit TV show, you probably
know that “The Closer” is a
term most often used in
baseball. It refers to a pitcher
who specializes in coming in
late in the game to get the
final outs and seal the deal.
In other words, the door may
still be open just a crack for
the opposition, but he closes
it.
Open doors are sometimes
used as an analogy for
success in other aspects of
life, but to stock car racing
competitors, it seems closed
ones might be better.
Maybe the true definition
of a “NASCAR closer” is
someone who is not only
willing to slam that door, but
will then nail it shut, remove
the knob, use epoxy to apply
weather stripping around all
four sides, and then lay a
wall of bricks in front of it.
Chase drivers beware: I
heard someone just spotted
Kevin Harvick walking
around with a toolbox.
The new gymnasium at Harrells Christian Academy, which was once a dream, is now a reality. The
new addition is adjacent to the high school building and gives HCA three practice courts. The
jayvee and varisty girls basketball players were able to pratice on the new court for the first time
Nov. 1. ʻThe new gymnasium is absolutely beautiful. I am so excited about having practice on it;
the new floor is so nice. Iʼm really, really happy about it,ʼ Kim Bowles, an HCA coach, said.
