Most coaches would sit back and smile at the thought of returning four starters. CSI head coach Randy Rogers looks at
things a little differently.
“I never want to be just satisfied,” Rogers said. “And I never want our players to settle for being good when they can be
great.”
That drive led Rogers to recruit more height and more depth this season in hopes of returning to a place no Region 18
team had ever been until two years ago when Rogers led the Golden Eagles into the NJCAA National Championship game in
Salina, Kan.
“We have good sophomore leadership,” Rogers said.
“We’re balanced inside and outside now. Teams can’t just
focus on our outside game this season. I think we will have
the ability to score and put up a lot of points.”
The offense and defense starts at the top with the point
guard and the Golden Eagles return one of the best in the
country. Region 18 Player of the Year and first-team All-
American Maria Moore will trigger the offense. The 5-5
guard averaged 19 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for CSI
last season and with the added experience will definitely be
key to the Golden Eagles success. Joining her at the guard
position will be returning 2-guard Brittany Moore. Moore was
deadly from the 3-point line last season, leading the conference
in 3-point field goal percentage as well as 3-pointers per game.
But that wasn’t enough offense for Rogers.
He added outside threats Maylene Ornelas (5-6 point
guard), Daraysha Kennedy (5-5 guard), Amy Higbee (5-8 guard,
Kali Hess (5-8 guard) and Tera Tremayne (5-7 guard).
Tremayne knocked down 246 high school career 3-pointers.
Rogers will look to returning starter Amy Bratvold at the 3guard
position. Already an outside threat, the 6-foot Bratvold
worked hard on her mid-range shot in the off-season and should
be tough to shut down. Last season her consistency gave the
Golden Eagles 9 points and 6 rebounds per game. Look for
those numbers to increase even more this year.
Returning posts Alexis Tucker (5-11) and Ashley Thompson
(5-10) spent much of last spring on versatility. If Rogers decides
to go with a big lineup, they will be able to play some at the 3-
