Campus Police: The Campus Police Department has filled the Chief of Campus Police
position and the Deputy Chief of Campus Police position is again staffed. The Campus
Police Department has added the Command Level position of Campus Police Captain.
The Campus Police Department has initiated random classroom and student searches at
school district high schools and middle schools. These will be continued on a regular and
random basis. Canine searches may be added in the future in cooperation with local law
enforcement partners. The following items also have been added: a metal detector for the
Academy of Excellence at Bloomfield Middle School, additional metal detector wands
for hall monitors, and two officers focused on gangs and bullying have been identified
and implemented in the Campus Police Department.
Alternative Schools: The District has hired two hall monitors for the Academy of
Excellence at Hutchings and an additional two hall monitors for the Academy of
Excellence at Bloomfield. Two additional hall monitors have been placed at Westside
High School. Four additional hall monitors are currently being recruited for hire.
Transportation: A task force chaired by the Transportation Director will be formed to
address each of the recommendations by Safe Havens International.
Cox Communications Presents Initiative to Offer Low-Priced Internet and Computers
Cox Communications is partnering with Connect2Compete to bring low-priced, high speed
internet and computers to qualifying families in the Bibb County School District.
Connect2Compete is a nonprofit initiative, aiming to bring families online by building
awareness, promoting digital literacy training, and increasing access to technology, which
dovetails with the District's Strategic Plan, "The Macon Miracle," and its goal of providing
students with better access to technology.
Between now and the end of December families whose children receive free lunch in 22
elementary, middle, and high schools in Bibb County will be eligible to sign up for Internet
service at a cost of $9.95 per month. The program also makes laptop and desktop computers
available for $150.
Starting next week families will receive a letter telling them how to apply. Local partners will
host informational meetings and training fairs as well.
National studies show that less than half of low-income K-12 students have broadband at home
compared with more than 90 percent of higher-income families. Students with a PC and
broadband at home also have graduation rates that are 6 percent to 8 percent higher than similar
students who don’t have access to the Internet.
Bibb County is one of five school districts across the country chosen for this pilot program.
Starting in 2013 the program will open up to eligible students at every Bibb County public
school. Additional assistance with the program will come from the Knight Foundation.
