Campus Police: <strong>The</strong> Campus Police Department has filled <strong>the</strong> Chief <strong>of</strong> Campus Police<br />
position and <strong>the</strong> Deputy Chief <strong>of</strong> Campus Police position <strong>is</strong> again staffed. <strong>The</strong> Campus<br />
Police Department has added <strong>the</strong> Command Level position <strong>of</strong> Campus Police Captain.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Campus Police Department has initiated random classroom and student searches at<br />
school d<strong>is</strong>trict high schools and middle schools. <strong>The</strong>se will be continued on a regular and<br />
random bas<strong>is</strong>. Canine searches may be added in <strong>the</strong> future in cooperation with local law<br />
enforcement partners. <strong>The</strong> following items also have been added: a metal detector for <strong>the</strong><br />
Academy <strong>of</strong> Excellence at Bloomfield Middle School, additional metal detector wands<br />
for hall monitors, and two <strong>of</strong>ficers focused on gangs and bullying have been identified<br />
and implemented in <strong>the</strong> Campus Police Department.<br />
Alternative <strong>Schools</strong>: <strong>The</strong> D<strong>is</strong>trict has hired two hall monitors for <strong>the</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong><br />
Excellence at Hutchings and an additional two hall monitors for <strong>the</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong><br />
Excellence at Bloomfield. Two additional hall monitors have been placed at Westside<br />
High School. Four additional hall monitors are currently being recruited for hire.<br />
Transportation: A task force chaired by <strong>the</strong> Transportation Director will be formed to<br />
address each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recommendations by Safe Havens International.<br />
Cox Communications Presents Initiative to Offer Low-Priced Internet and Computers<br />
Cox Communications <strong>is</strong> partnering with Connect2Compete to bring low-priced, high speed<br />
internet and computers to qualifying families in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bibb</strong> <strong>County</strong> School D<strong>is</strong>trict.<br />
Connect2Compete <strong>is</strong> a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it initiative, aiming to bring families online by building<br />
awareness, promoting digital literacy training, and increasing access to technology, which<br />
dovetails with <strong>the</strong> D<strong>is</strong>trict's Strategic Plan, "<strong>The</strong> Macon Miracle," and its goal <strong>of</strong> providing<br />
students with better access to technology.<br />
Between now and <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> December families whose children receive free lunch in 22<br />
elementary, middle, and high schools in <strong>Bibb</strong> <strong>County</strong> will be eligible to sign up for Internet<br />
service at a cost <strong>of</strong> $9.95 per month. <strong>The</strong> program also makes laptop and desktop computers<br />
available for $150.<br />
Starting next week families will receive a letter telling <strong>the</strong>m how to apply. Local partners will<br />
host informational meetings and training fairs as well.<br />
National studies show that less than half <strong>of</strong> low-income K-12 students have broadband at home<br />
compared with more than 90 percent <strong>of</strong> higher-income families. Students with a PC and<br />
broadband at home also have graduation rates that are 6 percent to 8 percent higher than similar<br />
students who don’t have access to <strong>the</strong> Internet.<br />
<strong>Bibb</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>is</strong> one <strong>of</strong> five school d<strong>is</strong>tricts across <strong>the</strong> country chosen for th<strong>is</strong> pilot program.<br />
Starting in 2013 <strong>the</strong> program will open up to eligible students at every <strong>Bibb</strong> <strong>County</strong> public<br />
school. Additional ass<strong>is</strong>tance with <strong>the</strong> program will come from <strong>the</strong> Knight Foundation.<br />
