W.P.S. Marshall will be remembered by many as a very active member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Clove</strong> <strong>Club</strong>, and <strong>of</strong> ‘E’<br />

Company <strong>of</strong> the London Rifle Brigade. While still at <strong>School</strong> he distinguished himself as a marksman,<br />

winning outright the Patriotic Society’s shield and medal at the Bisley Boys’ Camp. He joined the London<br />

Rifle Brigade soon after leaving school, and in 1912 won a cup in the guard-mounting competition.<br />

In 1913 he secured the Kingsford Challenge Cup, and also won a cup presented by Captain Thompson<br />

for competition in the Battalion Marathon Race. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the E Company team that shot<br />

against the <strong>School</strong> in January, 1914. He went to the Front with the 1st Battalion <strong>of</strong> the L.R.B. In<br />

November last, and after serving in the trenches throughout the winter, was engaged in the heavy fighting<br />

near Ypres from April 23rd to May 13th. On the latter date he was killed by a shell which burst close<br />

to him during a heavy bombardment.<br />

Sergeant Marshall was killed in, aged 24, 14th May, 1915 and has no known grave.<br />

He is commemorated on the Menin Gate, on Panel 52.
