I’d like to use this month’s message to engage the club in a conversation concerning the qualifications for president of CVC. Since the beginning, the prerequisite has been that the president must serve at least one year in another board position before becoming eligible. While this seems reasonable, it also restricts the pool of candidates. During CVC’s history, 24 people have served on the board out of our 78 members, or about 31%. However, eight or 33% of those folks have already served as president. Three more have either moved away or live here part time. Four others have family health issues or don’t attend enough meetings to be eligible. Now we are suddenly down to just nine people. Eight of those potential candidates are either currently serving multi-year terms on the board, or just finished a stint within the last three years and could probably use a break. That leaves one person left who served on the board 13 years ago who is healthy, eligible and has no excuses. Although this person I think would make a good president, suppose they decline. Then it’s up to either a former president, current board member or a very recent board member to step up. What I am proposing is relaxing the requirement so that anyone who has served on any board, or anyone who has three years good standing in the club, could run for the job. I can think of five or six people that could step in and hit the ground running. Besides, how does having served on the CVC board 10 or 15 years ago make you any more prepared today than a member who has been treasurer of their Kiwanis club for the past seven years, have career management experience, or a newer member that has been actively involved in CVC who is willing to lead the club? Also consider every new incoming president attends a board meeting prior to taking office. The soon to be pastpresident becomes the parliamentarian and is there for at least a year to provide guidance and advice to the new president. What it all boils down to is you either have leadership skills or you don’t. Every year people get nominated for president only to be disqualified because they haven’t served on the CVC board. Those that are qualified decline because they don’t want the job or they feel they have done enough service at this point. So then the club goes begging for someone to do it. In rare instances there might be two candidates and we actually have a real election instead of the traditional rubber stamp. If the requirement for President of the United States is be a natural born U.S. citizen and be at least 35 years old with no requirement of prior board service, why shouldn’t CVC reconsider its policy. General meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Jeff Levin in the absence of President Craig Hansen. Minutes from the May General meeting were read by Terri Parks. Motion was made by Gordon Capurro and seconded by Dale Comer to accept the minutes as read. Membership Chairman Diane Hays introduced our guests and potential members Del Walker and Susan Cursi. She added that she has the "In the Highlights" forms for anyone interested in being profiled in the newsletter. Treasurer Fred Parks gave the June Treasurer's report. Andy Anderson had a question regarding what made up the bank balance. Vice President of Public Relations Jeff Levin reported on the birthdays and anniversaries of the club members. In the absence of Vice President of Activities Pam Hansen, Patricia Garrahan had members report on their past runs. She reported the future runs as the Word from Home car show, Phoenician Gardens, potluck at the Capurro's, El Cid's dinner run, Chowchilla Steakhouse dinner run, Solvang, King's Diner, Chowchilla car show, Alaskan cruise, Ladies' day with dominos, and Christmas at Hearst Castle. In the absence of Sergeant of Arms Charlie Fosnaugh, Skip Severance volunteered to collected badge fines. He collected $0.75. Our "In the News" reporter Jan Pflepsen reported the news concerning our Corvette families. Keith Garrison thanked members for their well wishes for his recovery from surgery. Parliamentarian Linda Laningham had nothing to report. Old Business: Skip gave an update on the new Stingray. New Business: The next Board meeting will be at the home of Fred and Terri Parks on July 2nd at 7:00 p.m. The next General meeting is July 16th at 6:30. The motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Leigh Ann Severance and seconded by Skip Severance.
