From Newton derives the myth that one “sees by
wavelength”. Newton actually came to believe that:
• white light is “composed” of homogeneous lights (spectrum)
• homogeneous lights are “atomic” (experimentum crucis)
• all colors (qualia, i.e., “redness’’, etc.) are deterministically
and uniquely related to the homogeneous lights
Newton was wrong on all three counts.
His notions remain popular though.
