When two chlorine atoms approach each other,<br />

the unpaired 3p 3 electrons are shared by both<br />

atoms in a covalent <strong>bond</strong>. Each chlorine atom<br />

in the Cl 2 molecule now have 6 electrons in its<br />

own valence shell and sharing two giving each<br />

valence shell octet.<br />
