Foundation of Canada
wants to make one thing
perfectly clear: you don't
have to donate a kidney
to be a life saver.
The Kidney
Foundation is looking for
volunteers to go door to
door this coming March
as part of their annual
March Drive campaign.

that winds up this weekend. Many eidiibits and displays are also open.

workers in three easy ways.
Ask a store manager:
If he or she can guarantee the products you'd like to purchase are not made under sweatshop
conditions?
If the store's suppliers pay their workers a living wage?
I^What they are doing to ensure dignity and fairness for workers?
"Sweating" as much labour as possible out of workers means forcing them to work long hours at
starvation wages, in unsanitary and unsafe workplaces. Their bosses are breaking laws for profit,
ignoring minimum wages, child labour and safety laws to make toys, running shoes, and garments
sold in Canada. Who works in sweatshops?...young people, women, people of color, and new
immigrants.
l\/lyths about sweatshops:
1. "It's not my problem."
Working conditions in many countries have worsened; every day an estimated 80,000 children
enter the workforce around the world. Welcome to the new global economy where plant closures,
"down-sizing", work pace "speed-ups", and relocations affect us all.'
2. "There are no sweatshops in Canada."
Sweatshops are a reality in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and other Canadian cities where workers
in the garment industry are caught up in the new global sweatshop system;
3. "There's nothing I can do."
We are not asking ydu to boycott. But retailers and manufacturers are accountable for the goods
they make or sell. There IS an altemative to sweatshops: Use your consumer power to tell them -
Canadians don't want to buy items made in sweatshops. ^ • ,
We can bring an end to sweatshops, but it begins with you deciding to ask even one store manager
the questions noted above. This holiday season you can make a difference for working children
and adults here in Canada and around the world.
