Familiar faces return in
AFTER A vote on
Tuesday, the Nazko feand
has a hew band council.
The vote, held in the
Nazko Community Hall,
saw incumbent chief
Doreen Patrick returned
to office in a convincing
36 to 26 ^'ote^vfctory
over challenger Bruce
Clement.
Former chief Stanley
Boyd was also elected to
the band council after
garnering 44 votes.
The other seat on the
band council was hotly
contested, however. Dale
Paul and Bernice Jacks
bdtlf weigtied in with"23
votes apiece, forcing a
runoff wherein both
names were put in a hat
and Paul's name was
pulled, making him the
victor.
Other candidates in
the election included
Darlene Alec (21 votes),
Shawn Patrick (one vote),
and- Monica-Paul- (four-votes).
In an interview.
Patrick said she hopes to
use her two-year term to
promote educational and
economic issues in Nazko.
"My plan is to make
sure that education is a top
priority," she said. "I
want to see the people
-who have dropped out of
school
education.'

new set of faces
around the Kluskus
Council table.
In an election held
on Wednesday in flhe
Kluskus village, band
members elected four new
council members and an
executive chief.
This new position
will have executive chief,
Archie Chantyman, shadowing
the Hereditary
Chief, Roger Jirrimie, at
meetings and band negotiations.
"I am not replacing
Roger," Archie said in an
interview Thursday. "I'll
be there to help."

and listening and
talking to the band members
as top priorities.
Those who have
tracked the band for the
past several years see this
election as a step forward.
"This council, especially

-reported Thursday that
the thieves broke into the
carport and made off
with two mountain bikes,
as well as three snow
boards, all of which were
equipped with bindings.

If he or she can guarantee the products you'd like to purchase are not made under sweatshop

If the store's suppliers pay their workers a living wage?
I^What they are doing to ensure dignity and fairness for workers?
"Sweating" as much labour as possible out of workers means forcing them to work long hours at
starvation wages, in unsanitary and unsafe workplaces. Their bosses are breaking laws for profit,
ignoring minimum wages, child labour and safety laws to make toys, running shoes, and garments
sold in Canada. Who works in sweatshops?...young people, women, people of color, and new
immigrants.

1. "It's not my problem."
Working conditions in many countries have worsened; every day an estimated 80,000 children
enter the workforce around the world. Welcome to the new global economy where plant closures,
"down-sizing", work pace "speed-ups", and relocations affect us all.'

Sweatshops are a reality in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and other Canadian cities where workers
in the garment industry are caught up in the new global sweatshop system;
3. "There's nothing I can do."
We are not asking ydu to boycott. But retailers and manufacturers are accountable for the goods
they make or sell. There IS an altemative to sweatshops: Use your consumer power to tell them -

Then the room filled with smoke as Jeff took &
puff.
Jenny,couldn't believe he was smoking that stuff. ,
Now Jeff was ready to ride to the point
But only after he'd smoked another joint.
They jumped in the car for the moonlight ride,
Not thinking that he was too drunk to dive.
They finally made it to the point at last,
And Jeff started trying to make a pass.
A pass is not what Jenny wanted at all
(and by pass, I^don't mean playing football).
"Perhaps my parents were right...maybe I am too

Chance Foster, Graeme Rubisch and Jeliza MacDonald weren't at all shy to be on stage, performing to a full house at St.
Ann's hall on Wednesday night. The kindergarten class performed a couple of numbers for family and friends.

Discretion: a better
part of valour?
HAVE YOU ever
done a buddy thing with
your main squeeze?
- What I'm talking
about is doing things with
your wife, partner or
significant other. Things
like hiking, ,canoeing,
snowshoeing, skiing,
skinny dipping (well,
maybe skinny-dipping is
in another category
altogether, I don't know)
or golf. Or, and here's an
extreme - hunting!
My wife, my lover,
my friend went hunting
not long ago with her son,
Janties. I stayed home, to
"mow the lawn, dear, one
more time before the
snow flies."
Actually, I was
somewhat reliictant to get
into otu: truck, drive way
out into the sticks, with a
woman with a loaded
gun!
You see,^I have, at
times, somehow annoyed
her.
An example is that
for no reason whatsoever,
that I could ascertain, I
caused Bonnie to walk
home from the second tee
at the Drdgon Lake Golf
Course.
It couldn't have been
that little hint on
grooving her swing that I
laid on her, could it?
Nah! It could have been
worse - she coidd have
grooved, her swing by
laying aft eight iron
alongside my head.
Another time, I was
accused of paying much
too much attention to a
tall bond with - well,
never mind. Bonnie
reminded n\e that I couid
be her surrogate
grandfather.
So, "a-hunting they
did go" without me.
Discretion being the
better part of valour, I
waived participation in
this particular foray into
the forests.
The two interepid
woods-persons were, in
fact going put for a load
of wood for the boys. The
guns were along for the.
ride, "just in case a fourpoint
buck jumps out."
They took my er - our
explorer.
"Drive carefully and
don't forget to put it in
four-wheel-drive, if need
be, and make sure you use
a tarp to protect the
upholstery, and don't ...
what's that? Hey, watch
the language, eh!"
Ah yes - peace and
quiet here at home. I
wonder what's on the old
boob tube?
Where's that damn
remote? Cold beer, warm
furnace turned up to a
livable degree,
comfortable chair. Oh,
great! The Skins Game on
rerun. I missed that one.

have dozed off for a
moment. Holy cow, it's
dark! What was I ... Oh,

The phone changed
hands. "Hello?" it was

about- 120 yards away. I
scoped him and saw the
four points. I let go and
got him. One shot. He's a
beauty. The best I've ever
got!"
It was true? Now,
James is insufferable. He
tells the story at every
slight opportunity. His
brother is being driven to
distraction. Film at
eleven.

column, I posed the
query, "Where did the
expression, "Bob's Yoar
Uncle" come from? Any
ideas? Give me a caiL

I TRIED these cookies
at my mom's a few
years ago, and managed
to get the recipe from her.
They are very good.
Unfortunately, they don't
freeze very well, so you
can't make them ahead of
time. But they do keep in
an airtight container for a
little while.
McLaren's cheese
cookies
1 8-ounce container Armstrong
Sharp Cheddar
cheese
1/2 cup butter or margarine
3/4 cup flour
1 tsp. worchestershire
sauce
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
2 cups rice krispies cereal
, Cream the. cheese and
- butter together. Add worchestershire
and cayenne.
Add Rice Krispies,^ cereal
and combine until well
mixed. Drop by teaspoonfuls
onto greased cookie
sheet. Bake in a 350F
oven for 7 to 10 minutes
just until starting to
brown around the edges.
You don't want them too
brown. Cool on racks and
store in airtight container.
Makes 38 small cookies.

WILLIAMS LAKE SALE THURSDAY DECEMBER 3RD
Total receipts for the Williams Lake Sale Thursday
Dec. 3, 1998 was 300 head of cattle & calves.
Light receipts of all classes of cattle, but most
sales were fully steady on the better quality kinds.
Joe Hoessl's 495 lb. s/c traded to 118.50. Dick
Bauche's 505 lb. s/c traded to 117.25. Howard &
Stephanie Briscoe's 420 lb. s/c traded to 125.25,
their 400 lb. h/c's reached 117.50. Kent Long's
529 lb. s/c traded to 117.50, their 375 lb. h/c's
reached 118.00. Butcher cows and bulls were
higher today as some high yielding kinds were on
offer. Andy Andersons 1415 lb. butcher cows
traded to 46.25. The Alkali Lake Ranch butcher
bulls traded to 56.90. Bonnie Robertsons bred
cows topped our sale at 975.00 each.
