"VASELINE PETROLEUM" Jelly helps you make
the most of these five points. (Contributed by
beautiful women everywhere, by beauty editors,
and by stage stars):
For scalp and hair—To dress hair and make
it shiny, dampen slightly, spread a tiny bit
of "Vaseline Jelly over the palms of the
hands, and apply to the hair. Then brush
briskly. To treat the scalp, part the hair, lock
by lock, massage the scalp at the part with
"Vaseline" Jelly on the finger tips. Leave on
over night, then shampoo.
To shape the eyebrows—Apply a bit of "Vaseline
Jelly with the finger tip and shape with
an eyebrow brush.
To encourage the eyelashes—Apply "Vaseline"
Jelly with a tiny brush ana leave on over
night.
For chapped lips and skin—Apply to the lips
several times a day. Spread a thin layer over
chapped skin and leave on all night.
To beautify hands—U the hands are rough and
cracked massage with "Vaseline" Jelly and
wear soft silk or cotton gloves over night.
If the hands arc grimy from housework or
gardening, cleanse with "Vaseline" Jelly and
wash with a non-irritating soap. If the grime
has got into the cracks of the hands, leave the
"Vaseline" Jelly on over night and wear
gloves. This treatment makes the hands soft,
and keeps the cuticle of the nails firm and
unbroken.
"Vaseline" Jelly is so good for these beauty
uses not only because it is pure and safe, but
because it is an ideal emollient. Keep a special
jar for toilet use. At all druggists. And remember
when you buy that the trademark "Vaseline"
patchwork and Quilting
ijM@f\ in pillows
WOULDN'T you love to make
one of these joll y patchwork
or quilted pillows to tuck in
the corner of the sofa or the
favorite arm chair? In bright, crisp
calicoes with hand-quilting and real
patchwork, they add a dash of color and
a quaint touch to room furnishings.
Like grandmother's old-time treasure
quilts they arc made by hand.
The front is no larger than a quilt
block. Seams arc made on the wrong
side or they may be made on right side
and bound. They are hand quilted or
left plain. Sides are boxed with cording
or tailored trimming inserted at scams.
Quilting is quite simple to do. It
consists of fine running stitches, done
with- matching or contrasting thread.
To quilt a pieced pillow top, lay a
piece of sheet wadding on the wrong
side of the pieced top, then cover the
sheet wadding with voile or unbleached
muslin (the size of the pillow top) which
has been stamped with the quilting
pattern. The quilting is done from the
wrong side, using buttonhole twist if
the pillow top is silk or strong cotton
thread if the top is of cotton. The
beauty of the finished pillow will depend
on the fineness of the stitches.
Changeable gold colored taffeta was
used for the round pillow at the right
above, with basket design in handquilting.
Hot-iron transfer pattern
No. 1130 was stamped on a circle of unbleached
muslin , 13 inches in diameter.
Top and back were cut the same size
and the side strip was cut 2 inches wide.
A layer of sheet wadding was placed
over the taffeta top and the wadding
was covered with the circular piece of
stamped muslin. The basket design was
hand-quilted with matching buttonhole
twist from the wrong side. Three rows
of quilting, 14 inch apart, added a nice
finish to the edge of front.
The round pillow with point edge is
made of yellow calico with a quaint
little flower design in green, rose, yellow
and black on a pale yellow ground.
The front and back are of the same
material. Pillow width is 13 !4 inches.
The point edge is of red and black
glazed chintz. To make a point , cut
a 4-inch square of chintz, fold diagonally
and then fold again through center to
give the point of 4 thicknesses of cloth.
Make 11 black and 11 red points. Pin
points together, alternating black and
red, lapping them Yi the width of point.
Baste point edges together and baste
to edge of pillow top. Sew front to
back, leaving opening to insert pillow.
The oblong quilted pillow, illustrated at
upper center, was made of an old taffeta
waist which was dyed a soft shade of
rose. The front and backs were cut 9
by 11 inches with a strip 2 inches wide
for the side box. Front and back were
quilted alike in diagonal lines Yi inch
apart with rose silk thread. The edges
were corded with a self-covered cord and
the boxed sides quilted in straight rows
\4 inch apart.
illustrated above. The back is cut of
yellow calico 9x1lYi inches. The front is
made of yellow, green , and rose flowered
calico, pieced together. Seams are
bound with black binding. After the
pieces are sewed and seams bound the
front of the pillow is quilted with white
thread in parallel rows Yi inch apart.
The strip for the sides is cut 2 inches
wide. It is quilted in parallel rows to
match the top and the seams where
back and front joi n the side boxing are
bound with black binding.
THE BASKET DESIGN SHOWN ABOVE IS NO. 1130
lower left measures 13 inches in diameter.
It is made of three triangular
sections of blue and white figured calico
and three of orange calico with a blue*
and-white design. The sections are
sewed together, alternating the color,
and the seams are bound with black
binding. The front may be quilted or
left plain. The back is cut in one piece
of orange figured calico. The side strip,
which measures 2 inches wide, is also
of orange calico. The sides are sewed
to top and bottom , making seams on
the right side. The seams are finished
with black binding.
""THE old-fashioned , tuck-under-arm
*¦ pillow at the lower right is made
of black-and-white polka dot and blackand-white
striped calico in quaint treeleaf
pattern. The latter consists of a
pieced leaf of four small triangular
pieces and two oblong pieces sewed
together diagonally at center with stem
in applique. Six triangular pieces and
one 3 inch square complete the front.
The front and back of the pillow measure
9x9 inches, with box strip cut 2 inches
wide. The side strip is of red striped
calico and hack of blue calico. The
front is pieced together like a quilt
block and quilted diagonally in parallel
rows Yi inch apart. The side strip is
quilted in straight rows Yi inch apart
and sewed to top and back with corners
boxed.
The tree-leaf is also attractive in light
calico pieces with background of dark
pieces. Write to the Handicraft Dept
