Draft by M.J.Karbig: The Cross of life
The Cross of life was originally a design for
a chasuble cross that – as it has not been
published before- is now available to the
readers of this magazine in an adapted form
in all its beauty.
As an outermost vestment the chasuble (in
the Mediaeval original a semi-circular robe
fastened at the front) decorates the visible
part of the priestly vestments and therefore
is traditionally the most splendid.
Here the symbolic power of embroidery is
shown to its very best advantage.
First of all in the four arms of the cross the
number „four“ is expressed as a number of
matter that binds us to this world.
All feelings and forms of expression of life
entwine the cross in the middle – the centre
of belief that is emphasised by the beautiful
golden spiral in its centralising effect as the
centre of life.
The feelings that identify and encourage the
„salt of life“ are represented in the four arms
of the cross:
◆ the roses stand for the „prime of life“, for
the opulence, the sensibility and love
◆ the scrolls stand for the effect of fate on
life, for the twists, the passion and the
wildness that are on our minds
◆ the thorns stand for the suffering in life,
for the worries, pain, poverty and mourning
◆ the tendriled plants for growing life, for
duty fulfilled from the centre of belief, for
the peace from which we grow and for
hope.
