Figure 8. SEM images of representative rinsed silver woodpile structure at
differentdegrees of magnification, for two different sides. Panels (a)-(d) show
close-ups of side 1 and side 2, respectively: (a) 1600, (b) 3125, (c) 6000, (d)
The images recorded with a magnitude of 12000 and 1m scale confirmed that
silver beams have continuous surface but roughness. This can be, on a hand, a
consequence of the technical “writing” conditions and the chemical system
composition. On the other hand, silver is very reactiv and can undergo chemical
changes in contact with atmosphere. Thus, the electroless plating is the best
manner to prevent the silver corrosion.
A uniform and smooth gold coating of the silver structures is achieved when
using a 0.1M methanolic HAuCl4 solution. The methanolic HAuCl4 solution
