When evaluating a patient with hypotension, always think of the following algorithm.<br />

Think of life-threatening causes and immediately rule them out. Here are some<br />

pointers:<br />

• ECG to r/o AMI as a cause of cardiogenic shock<br />

• CBC to r/o acute blood loss<br />

• Infectious workup if sepsis is suspected<br />

Decreased pulse pressure<br />

Cool extremities<br />

Poor cap refill<br />

Fluid Overload Hypovolemic<br />

Cardiogenic Shock<br />

Hypotension<br />

Hypovolemic Shock<br />

Wide pulse pressure<br />

Warm extremities<br />

Good cap refill<br />
