AAFP <strong>2012</strong> ALSO COURSE<br />
The Department <strong>of</strong> Family <strong>Medicine</strong> sponsored the <strong>2012</strong> ALSO<br />
Course on Friday, January 20th and S<strong>at</strong>urday, January 21st,<br />
<strong>2012</strong>. Since 2003, the DFM <strong>at</strong> UIC has coordin<strong>at</strong>ed the Advanced<br />
Life Support in Obstetrics course, designed to teach obstetrics providers<br />
how to handle obstetric emergencies and keep them up-to-d<strong>at</strong>e<br />
on evidence-based practice recommend<strong>at</strong>ions. The ALSO course<br />
instructors are comprised <strong>of</strong> a consortium <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong>-area family<br />
medicine residency faculty: UIC, <strong>Illinois</strong> Masonic, Hinsdale, Resurrection,<br />
and Cook County-Loyola-Provident are all represented.<br />
ALSO is a structured, evidence-based, multidisciplinary training program<br />
on the practical management <strong>of</strong> obstetric emergencies. The<br />
two-day course is for m<strong>at</strong>ernity care providers including physicians,<br />
midwives, nurses and other clinicians.<br />

The 45th STFM Annual Spring Conference will be held April<br />

technologies, emerging research, and public policy issues. The<br />

On September 21, 2011 physician leaders g<strong>at</strong>hered <strong>at</strong> Rush<br />
Medical Center for an event releasing an upd<strong>at</strong>ed Physicians’<br />
Breastfeeding St<strong>at</strong>ement th<strong>at</strong> combined the work <strong>of</strong><br />
IAFP with the <strong>Illinois</strong> chapters <strong>of</strong> the American Academy<br />
<strong>of</strong> Pedi<strong>at</strong>rics and the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Obstetrics and Gynecology.<br />
<strong>Illinois</strong> currently ranks 31st in breastfeeding r<strong>at</strong>es. The <strong>Illinois</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong><br />
Family Physicians Task Force members volunteered to review and help shape<br />

Award. He was<br />
honored for his<br />
humanitarian efforts in his n<strong>at</strong>ive Philippines. His volunteer<br />
duties include teaching <strong>at</strong> a nursing school in the<br />
Philippines. He also leads medical missions to his homeland<br />
community <strong>of</strong> Nueva Vizcaya in the Philippines.<br />
He was also fe<strong>at</strong>ured in the Elmwood Park Times, the<br />
local edition <strong>of</strong> the Sun Times Media Group. The article<br />
covered his dedic<strong>at</strong>ion to mission work in the Philippines<br />
and other n<strong>at</strong>ions. Dr. Guerrero received the<br />
award <strong>at</strong> the AAFP Annual Scientific Assembly in Orlando.<br />
Dr. Guerrero is a Clinical Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in<br />
the DFM <strong>at</strong> UIC.<br />
