On September 21, 2011 physician leaders gathered at Rush
Medical Center for an event releasing an updated Physicians’
Breastfeeding Statement that combined the work of
IAFP with the Illinois chapters of the American Academy
of Pediatrics and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Illinois currently ranks 31st in breastfeeding rates. The Illinois Academy of
Family Physicians Task Force members volunteered to review and help shape
this important physician statement are:

AAFP Congress of Delegates September 12-16, 2011 in Orlando
Javette Orgain,
MD, MPH (left),
IAFP’s pastpresident,
was
elected by acclamation
of the
Congress as the
AAFP’s Vice
Speaker. Dr. Orgain
is the second
Illinois member to serve in this position.
Illinois Chapter Resolutions:
IAFP was represented by delegates Drs. Orgain, Temporal,
Brull and Miller. The Illinois chapter submitted
or co-sponsored three resolutions considered by Congress:
Resolution 201, 305, and 507.
Christopher Guerrero,
MD (left),
IAFP’s 2010 Family
Medicine Teacher
of the Year for volunteer
faculty, received
the AAFP
Humanitarian
Award. He was
honored for his
humanitarian efforts in his native Philippines. His volunteer
duties include teaching at a nursing school in the
Philippines. He also leads medical missions to his homeland
community of Nueva Vizcaya in the Philippines.
He was also featured in the Elmwood Park Times, the
local edition of the Sun Times Media Group. The article
covered his dedication to mission work in the Philippines
and other nations. Dr. Guerrero received the
award at the AAFP Annual Scientific Assembly in Orlando.
Dr. Guerrero is a Clinical Assistant Professor in
the DFM at UIC.
Also in attendance as IAFP Board Chair was Patrick Tranmer,
MD, MPH, Department Head (left, 1st) and Abbas Hyderi,
MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine
(left, 2nd).
