top of the world. There’s an overow of natural scenery and some excellent views<br />

of Mount Khangchendzonga. And it’s all wrapped up in a blanket of spiritual<br />

serenity, that comes from the many Buddhist monasteries and stupas in the region.<br />

Where is it located?<br />

Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is located at an<br />

elevation of 5,600 feet (1,700 m), and sits on the ank<br />

of a ridge.<br />

How to get here<br />

Hit the road<br />

Gangtok is connected by road to Darjeeling,<br />

Kalimpong, Siliguri and other centres apart from all<br />

the district headquarters within Sikkim.<br />

Cut through the clouds<br />

Fly out to Bagdogra airport which is approximately<br />

124 km away, and the nearest airport to Gangtok.<br />

Hop on a train<br />

You can catch a train to Siliguri or New Jalpaiguri<br />

which are the nearest railway stations to Gangtok.<br />

Alpine Bar: This cozy lounge bar, furnished with alpine<br />

timber is well-stocked and serves the best beverages<br />

Orchid Restaurant: Relaxed seating arrangements,<br />

breathtaking views of surrounding areas, soothing<br />

décor and laid back ambience create a space that is<br />

Places of interest in Gangtok<br />

Research Institute of Tibetology: This<br />

renowned worldwide centre for the study of Buddhist<br />

philosophy and religion, is a treasure house of rare<br />

thankas, statues, over 200 Buddhist icons and prized<br />

art objects. (Closed on second Saturdays and Govt.<br />

holidays.)<br />

Ganesh Tok: About 7 km from the city, it offers<br />

majestic views of the city far below, framed by<br />

Mt. Khangchendzonga and Mt. Siniolchu.<br />

Nathu La: Nathu La is a pass on the Indo-Chinese<br />

border that serves as a trade link between the two<br />

countries. Situated at a distance of 56 km from<br />

Gangtok, Nathu La Pass has once the main route for<br />

Sikkim - Tibet Trade. Nathu La used to be known as<br />

the Silk Route. At an elevation of 14,450 feet, Nathu La<br />

is renowned for its diverse alpine ora and fauna. The<br />

terms 'Nathu' and 'La' mean 'listening ears' and 'pass'<br />

respectively in the Tibetan language. The road to<br />

Nathu La is one of the highest motorable roads in<br />

India. This road passes through Tsomgo Lake on its<br />

way to Nathu La Pass. For most part of the year, this<br />

tranquil place remains covered under a thick layer of<br />

snow. A special permit is required in order to visit<br />

Nathu La Pass.<br />

Himalayan Zoological Park: Located 8 km away<br />

from town, it is home to the elusive red panda - the<br />

cuddly state animal, barking deer, Himalayan black<br />

bear and others.<br />

Pal Zurmang Kagyud (Ranka) Monastery:<br />

Located at Lingdum village about 20 km from Gangtok,<br />

it was built by the present Gharwang Rinpoche who is<br />

the 12 th incarnate of Zurmang Gharwang.<br />

As this quaint hill station sits on mountainous terrain, there is no direct connectivity to the region<br />

via train or plane. However, roadways ll the gap and offer good connectivity by buses, cabs and<br />

jeeps.


Start packing<br />

• Carry your resort confirmation voucher, your<br />

membership card and your photo id<br />

• Any other travel related documentation<br />

• Sunglasses, camera and any specific medication<br />

• Depending upon the time of the year, the climatic<br />

conditions, and on the activities that you would like to<br />

participate in, please do carry appropriate apparels<br />

and footwear. Your holiday consultant can help you in<br />

• If you are planning a monsoon holiday, do<br />

remember to take your umbrella / raincoat along<br />

• Do take note of your travel time from the closest<br />
