EXPERTS’ ADVICE
On The Health
& Safety of your pet
Dog Grooming 101
Lynn A. McCarron, DVM, Diplomate ABVP
Many dogs often benefit from regular bathing or grooming. Simple
techniques can make this an easier adventure to try at home. When
preparing to groom your dog, you’ll want to make sure you have
all the tools you need for the grooming to make things go more
smoothly. First brush and comb your dog’s coat prior to bathing. If
you don’t, your pet is likely to end up with nasty tangles and mats.
Tools for grooming include:
How to brush your dog
• An undercoat rake or long comb to remove the
loose undercoat hairs. Some people prefer using
wide-toothed combs first and then changing to
progressively narrower, finer-toothed ones. This
is especially helpful when your pet has tangled
or matted hair.
• Detangler solution and a mat splitter or mat
rake is very useful for tangles and mats (use
electric clippers in extreme cases).
• A shedding blade has small teeth and is
generally shaped like a loop attached to a handle.
It is very useful for dogs that are shedding
extensively.
• A slicker brush stimulates the coat and
skin and removes dead surface hair, and is a
good choice for routine brushing, but may be
irritating to very short haired dogs’
skin.
• A short curry brush polishes the coat
and helps get rid of dead hair.
To keep your dog’s coat healthy and shiny regular brushing
is a necessity. To get all of the hair brushed (not just the
top coat) a good method is to brush “backwards” against
the direction of the fur growth and then brush it back into
place in the direction of the hair growth. This usually loosens
and removes dead hair and stimulates your dog’s skin.
Bathing your dog
Specially formulated dog shampoos, conditioners, cream rinses, and
detanglers make bath time a healthier and happier prospect for man
and beast! As tempting as it may be to use human shampoo or even
baby shampoo, these are not formulated with a pH (acidity level) that
is friendly to your furry friend. This can make their skin dry, itchy,
and even inflame allergy conditions.
Basics of bathing
1. Place your dog in a tub of appropriate size. Only the smallest dogs
fit comfortably in a sink. Your bathtub or a groomer’s tub is your best
choice. You can use the shower to bathe your dog but plan on getting
wet! A plastic apron or a raincoat may be your best friend when
bathing your dog.
2. Wet your dog’s hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Be very
careful not to get water into the ears. Placing cotton balls into the ear
canals can help keep them dry, just don’t forget to remove them!
3. Dilute shampoo with a small amount of warm water, and then
lather up your dog’s coat thoroughly with a good pH-balanced dog
shampoo. Wash the face and sensitive eyes with the wet washcloth.
Soap free shampoos are a good choice for gentle cleaning of dogs
with healthy skin. There are great medicated shampoos available for
dogs with skin allergies, bacterial, or yeast infections, or those with
excessively oily or scaly skin. Ask your veterinarian to help choose
one best for your dog’s skin.
4. Rinse thoroughly. Soap left on the skin can cause itchy, inflamed
skin and dryness.
5. Apply a good pH-balanced conditioner or cream rinse for dogs.
Using a conditioner that prevents tangles and also keeps the coat from
drying out is a good idea for most coat types.
6. Thoroughly rinse away the conditioner.
7. Get out those towels and start drying. You can use a blow dryer,
on the low, cool setting to hasten the drying process. Be aware some
dogs really hate the blow dryer, so in their case towel drying
may be better.
Once your pet is dry, give them one more
thorough brushing and voila! You are done!
than twenty years, is a board
EXPERTS’ ADVICE
Acupuncture for pets?
Are you crazy?
The therapuetic benefits of acupuncture for companion animals
Jessica Bienapfl, DVM, CVA
“There must be something to acupuncture – you
never see any sick porcupines.”
~ Bob Goddard
Long used for horses, acupuncture is steadily gaining ground as a
viable treatment option for todays dogs and cats and can be used for
a variety of purposes. People often seek out acupuncture in addition
to western medicine therapies to enhance the overall comfort for
their pets. While this therapy is not appropriate in all cases, it has
tremendous potential to help alleviate suffering and improve overall
quality of life, particularly geriatric animals.
Acupuncture is a traditional medicine technique developed in
China where very small, solid needles are placed over active
points to stimulate a biological response. These points have been
discovered and refined over the last 3000 years that acupuncture
has been practiced. The ancient Chinese believed this stimulation
was important to moving Qi (pronounced “chi”), or the life force,
through the channels or meridians in the body. When in balance,
Qi should flow through the body in a prescribed manner and an
orderly fashion. When the Qi is out of balance or blocked, disease or
pain ensues. In western medicine we are able to quantify a biological
response to acupuncture. Most often acupuncture points overlie what
is known as the ‘vascular bundle’ beneath the skin; the area where a
small artery, vein and nerve come from deeper in the body to the
surface. Stimulating these points causes a biological reaction, helping
to improve blood flow and encourage healing of the tissues. Trigger
point therapy has recently gained ground in western medicine and
oftentimes these points coincide with known acupuncture points.
In modern acupuncture many different forms of stimulation have
been developed and are used commonly:
-Dry Needling: Needles alone are placed.
-Moxibustion: An intense, focal heat to stimulate points directly by
heating the needles or indirectly by heating over the skin.
-Aquapuncture: Injection of an aqueous solution into a point for
further stimulation.
-Electro-Acupuncture: An electrical impulse is used to further
stimulate points or areas of the body.
-Cupping: Negative pressure is applied to the skin; this technique is
primarily used in human acupuncture as fur inhibits the formation
of a tight seal.
So what kinds of things do we treat with
acupuncture in pets? Primarily I see
a lot of geriatric pets that are on
the maximum level of medication
allowable and are still in pain. I
see patients for chronic back
pain and lameness. Oftentimes
show dogs or agility dogs
will use acupuncture to help
maintain their overall level of
fitness and athleticism.
Acupuncture is not a viable treatment for all types of diseases;
however it may be worth investigating as an option for therapy.
As with any medical decision, you should consult your veterinarian prior
to starting a treatment program with a certified veterinary acupuncture
practitioner. Acupuncture has tremendous potential to help animals
and should be considered a viable alternative to standard medical care.
Dr Bienapft graduated from University of Minnesota in 2008 and
completed acupuncture training through IVAS in 2009. She has 2 cats
and a dog, and loves to spend time outdoors with her husband. She’s
worked at Hillside Veterinary Hospital since 2008 and practices
on both dogs and cats.
PETS: the
Chanté McCoy
nother year, another round of racking our brains for the perfect
gifts…be it for Valentine’s, Easter, birthdays, or Christmas. How about
a pet?
We’ve seen it in the movies: the kitten in a red bow that goes along
with a box of chocolates, the big-eyed bunny or fuzzy chick in a
basket, a mysterious moving box emitting puppy sounds, and then the
smiles and squeals of surprise. Oh, my!
Hopefully, after those first few minutes of amazement and wonder, it’s
a tale that “ends happily ever after.” Unfortunately, for many, the story
comes to an abrupt halt a few chapters in.
Why? Despite the good intentions of the giver, the recipient didn’t
make the thoughtful decision to invite the animal into his/her life
and assume the huge responsibility involved in terms of time, energy,
and money. Soon, the novelty wanes. The “cute” puppy/kitten/bunny
becomes a larger, needy, dependent, often untrained “burden.” Even
less demanding hamsters, reptiles, and birds require daily care that
can develop into an unwelcome chore. “Cute” or “cool” are no longer
descriptors that come to mind.
Unlike a sweater, you usually can’t get a refund if a pet isn’t a good fit.
Instead of being returned to the department store to be repackaged,
the pet may be neglected, abused,
dropped off at a shelter, or
transferred to another family.
So much for the perfect gift.
Basically, prospective owners should
choose their pets. They’re making
a commitment that will last years.
Cats and dogs live an average of 12-
18 years, rabbits can live ten years,
parakeets 12-14 years, geckos 20-30
years, and rainbow boas 15-25 years.
Even little hamsters live up to three
years.
If you’re a parent wanting a pet for
the family, know that most of this
perfect
PET PEEVES
responsibility falls to you. Animals aren’t playthings or “lessons to be
learned.” Children tend to be easily distracted, and that hamster in
their bedroom may die of thirst.
If you’re absolutely convinced that a pet is still the spot-on gift, ask the
following questions, even if in a roundabout manner. (The Humane
Society, ASPCA, and American Kennel Club all recommend asking
questions upfront, and I daresay they have some experience in this
realm):
• Does the person really want a pet? (“Say, have you considered
getting a pet?”)
• What type? What breed? (This avoids getting a Bull Mastiff when
s/he has zebra finches in mind.)
• Does s/he have the time, ability, and interest to care for a pet?
average first-year costs for fish are $235. The costs go up for other pets:
cats average $1,035, rabbits cost about $1,055, and large dogs
As you can see, it’s a matter you don’t
Will these questions ruin the surprise?
Maybe, but having everyone on
board ensures a happy ending for all
(pet included) beyond the initial few
On November 19, 2009 we adopted Kandie (formerly Aggie)
from SLCo Animal Services. She was 4 months old at the time,
and was one of the first few Pit Bulls to be adopted out of their
Pit Crew program.
From the beginning, we knew Kandie was something special!
She was such a sweet little puppy, and when you looked
into her eyes, she would melt your heart. She brought a new
excitement into our home.
Kandie is a people dog – she loves people, much more than
she likes dogs. She is always looking for attention and wants
to meet everyone. You may even be able to get her to do a few
tricks. If you ask her to “watch me,” she’ll look you straight in
the eye and she’s got you. What a love bug!
In November 2011, she became a registered therapy dog with
Pet Partners and Therapy Animals of Utah. Now she gets to
meet new friends all the time. She visits the boys at Copper
Hills Youth Center weekly and the clients of Paramount Health
& Rehabilitation monthly. You can put this at the top of her list
of fun things to do!
In addition to therapy visits, Kandie loves to
snuggle, go for walks, do zoomies around the
yard, and play with her 2 sisters and brother
(all adopted). You may even find her out in the
community, being an ambassador for her breed.
Kandie is an amazing example of how Pit Bulls
and Shelter Dogs can be great additions to your
family and the community!
Kandie has also earned her CGC (Canine Good
Citizen) certification, her Bachelor’s & Master’s
degrees with C.L.A.S.S (Canine Life and Social
Skills), and is currently working towards getting
Powerful animal advocates support the Humane Society of Utah in Utah’s legislature
The current session of the Utah State legislature marks an
unprecedented collaboration between America’s most powerful
national animal welfare groups and the Humane Society of
Utah. This coalition is the result of a historic meeting on
October 31, 2012 where representatives from three highly
influential animal welfare groups gathered in Salt Lake City
to discuss legislative strategies with HSU staff members. The
2012 U.S. Animal Protection Laws Rankings published by
the Animal Legal Defense Fund may have provided some
of the impetus for this
meeting, as Utah was
ranked 46th (in the bottom
tier) of all 50 states. Puerto
WA
Rico, Guam, and the Virgin
MT
Islands are all ranked higher.
The American Society for
agreed to coordinate efforts
with the HSU to back
three pieces of legislation
benefitting Utah’s animals.
AK
According to HSU Executive
Director Gene Baierschmidt,
“through this unprecedented
HI
collaboration, we hope to affect significant change that will
better protect the animals of our state.”
Utah Senator Gene Davis (D-Salt Lake City) is sponsoring
all three bills, including legislation that would make
cockfighting a felony in our state. Utah has a long, sad history
of cockfighting dating back to the late 1800‘s. On January 26,
1888 an article in “Ogden Briefs” reported, “Cocks were fought
just north of this city...” A similar “Local Briefs” story in the
Salt Lake Herald on May 13, 1988 read, “A genuine cockfight
took place...in the vicinity of Warm Springs yesterday...”
Unfortunately, this unsavory practice still exists in modern
OR
times. On January 6, 2003 the Salt Lake Tribune reported, “an
estimated 150 to 200 people in Utah actively raise chickens for
fighting competitions...”
Through the years the Humane Society of Utah has received
reports of, or been involved with “busts” of cockfights in many
Utah locations including areas in or near Bluffdale, Delta,
Elberta, Fairview, Highland, Hyrum, Lakepoint, Lindon,
participants from
surrounding states, many
carrying firearms and
other weapons due in part
to the large amounts of
cash that are present. The
Drug Enforcement Agency
(DEA) has documented a
strong connection between
this “blood sport” and
violent crime...including
homicide...as well as the
distribution of illegal
drugs.
While cockfghting is illegal in all fifty states, Utah is not
among the 40 states (along with the District of Columbia) that
have made this horrific spectacle a felony. Since it is a felony in
many surrounding states and only a misdemeanor in Utah, the
Beehive state has become a magnet for cockfighters willing to
The second bill sponsored by Senator Davis would place
enforcement officers access to vehicles when dogs or
other animals are deemed to be in distress. This proposed
legislation would make it illegal to tether a dog for more than
10 hours per day. The Humane Society of Utah regards this
practice as inhumane and dangerous...not only to the dog that
is confined, but for other animals and humans as well.
Dogs continuously chained can become bored, frustrated,
anxious, neurotic, and agitated. Some actually suffer from
collars becoming embedded in their neck. Understandably,
dogs living in this condition often become aggressive. While
all animal welfare groups would prefer to see a total ban on
tethering it is the belief of the HSU’s new coalition that a
10 hour time limit would reasonably allow people who are
employed sufficient time to go to work and return home to
take their dog off the tether.
At the same time, it has become an all too common
occurrence in Utah where dogs are often seen locked in
parked cars on hot or extremely cold days. In a matter of
minutes, a dog can suffer heat stroke in a vehicle with interior
temperatures exceeding 75 degrees. Unlike humans, dogs do
not have the ability to sweat and reduce body temperature.
This has led to countless tragedies, many of them documented
(“Heat Kills Dog Left In Truck by Owner”-Salt Lake Tribune
June 6, 2006...”Labrador Dies of Heat Stroke in Parked Car”-
Deseret News July 13, 2005).
Fortunately, a handful of Utah communities have already
passed ordinances with provisions preventing people from
leaving dogs in vehicles for prolonged periods of time and
Protecting Utah’s Animals Continued...
allowing law enforcement officials to act once they are made
aware of such situations. The Humane Society of Utah and its
coalition of national animal welfare groups would now like to
see a state law enacted to protect Utah dogs placed in this lifethreatening
situation.
The third bill backed by Senator Davis would prohibit the
sale or distribution of dogs (specifically puppies) in public
areas such as shopping mall parking lots, etc. In the past few
years, pups being sold in front of “big box” stores have become
a frequent sight. Typically, these dogs are unsterilized and are
often unhealthy. Purchased on an impulse, the well-intentioned
buyers may soon realize the dog is ill, carries a disease or has
genetic defects. The Humane Society of Utah frequently receives
calls from distraught purchasers who are now confronted with
the parvovirus, autoimmune diseases and a variety of physical
maladies. Sadly, many of these animals end up in shelters where
the best or only option is to humanely euthanize the puppy and
end it’s suffering.
The law which is being proposed would keep these parking
lot puppy merchants (who may pay no sales tax and typically
cannot be contacted after the sale) from selling or giving away
puppies or mature dogs in public places. First time offenders
would receive a $250.00 fine while second time offenders would
be guilty of a misdemeanor violation which would carry a fine
not to exceed $1,000.00. This legislation would not only protect
puppies, but well meaning citizens who purchase on an
impulse, only to suffer financial and emotional hardship when
the dog becomes sick and they are confronted with medical
bills and the possibility that the pup they’ve fallen in love with
may have to be put to sleep. For these unsuspecting consumers,
there is seldom any recourse.
You can help Utah’s animals.
these bills and you will be able to send your Representative or
Senator a message in support of these proposed laws. Legislators
value their constituents’ opinions and passage of a bill is often tied
directly to the feedback they receive from the people who voted
them into office. It only takes a minute of your time and you will
have the satisfaction of knowing you have the potential to affect
much needed changes that will improve the treatment of animals
in Utah for years to come.
When Faith and Mike Ching moved to their new Herriman home
on five sprawling acres in 1998, they intended to use the extra room
for their rescued cats. “The house was set in on the property and the
neighborhood was safe with roads that weren’t busy. We thought it
would give the cats lots of land to roam on,” says Faith. Today, though,
you’ll see a wider variety of animals than cats if you visit the Chings.
With chickens, goats, cows, horses, pigs, sheep and more, the Ching
The Chings live amidst their rescued animals on a
sprawling, five-acre farm in Herriman.
It started with the Chings taking in a pot-bellied pig, then a goat or
two. Soon, word got out that there was a safe haven for farm animals,
and the rescue grew from there. Before long, the Ching Farm became
a safe haven for animals that would have otherwise gone to slaughter,
from all over Utah and neighboring states find their way to this farm
The Ching Farm Sanctuary & Rescue welcomes
visitors and volunteers year-round.
Visitors, including families, school groups, and Scout troops, regularly
come for tours to learn about the farm and its animals. They learn
about caring for the animals, as well as the names and unique stories
of the animals. Two of the newest animals that visitors encounter are
Laverne and Shirley, two farm piglets who came to the farm after being
donations of money and time, these two piglets are thriving.
Farm piglets Laverne and Shirley are two of the
newest rescue animals at Ching Farm.
To provide a safe, healthy place for Laverne, Shirley, and the other animals
to live and thrive, the farm depends on an army of volunteers, who work
hard each day to keep the animals’ pens and stalls clean and feed them.
Vet tech students regularly visit to perform vaccinations and exercise
the horses. And regular folks from all over the Salt Lake Valley willingly
give their time to keep the farm running and the animals safe and well.
The Snake Essentials
An introduction to the care and maintenance of a slithering companion
Last month we discussed the advantages of
having a snake as a pet and how to choose
one. This month we’ll talk about the care and
maintenance of snakes.
All you need to raise a healthy, happy
snake is a glass terrarium with a screen
top, a hiding box, some substrate, and a
water dish. The cage must be escape-proof!
Snakes are master escape artists and will
exploit the smallest of openings.
Most North American snakes will thrive at
room temperature (low 70s), but because
they are ectothermic (cold-blooded), their
metabolic rates function best at 80 to 85
degrees Fahrenheit. This can be easily
accomplished with a heat lamp above
the cage that allows them to simulate the
basking they do in nature.
Place a heat lamp above one end of the tank
or cage. This not only lights the cage, it also
creates temperature zones which allow the
snake to warm up and cool down as needed
David E. Jensen
by moving from one end of the cage to the
other. Snakes don’t require specific UVA or
UVB spectrum lighting like lizards do, so
you don’t have to buy those expensive pet
store lights, but don’t use fluorescent bulbs
because they don’t produce enough heat.
In a deep tank, most of the heat generated
by an overhead light will dissipate and very
little will reach the bottom of the cage. Make
sure you take temperature readings at the
floor of the cage where the snake is and not
at the top. A branch placed in the cage will
allow your snake to climb up closer to the
heat source and also provides good exercise.
Heat tape can be used underneath a cage,
but it can cause hot spots that can scald a
snake or even crack a glass floor. A rheostat
should be used to control any type of underthe-tank
heating pad.
Choose a good substrate. Aspen shavings
are attractive and allow snakes to burrow,
but newspaper is the most economic and
easy-to-clean cage liner. Unless you’re trying
to create a realistic looking eco-system,
newspaper is
the way to go. If
you use aspen
shavings, make
sure to buy the
dustless type.
Do NOT use
cedar chips –
these can be
toxic if a snake
accidentally
ingests them.
Snakes are
carnivores, and
most eat rodents.
Frozen rodents
are the easiest, cleanest, and cheapest way to
feed your snake, and they come in all sizes.
They can be purchased locally or you can buy
them in bulk from several companies that
will ship them to your door. Rodents must
be thawed completely at room temperature
before being offered to a snake. Live rodents
will try to defend themselves, and in an
enclosure they have a tactical advantage over a
snake. Do not feed your snake live rodents!
Adjust rodent size to the size of the snake.
Baby corn snakes eat pinky (new-born) mice,
and may eat two or three of them at a time
once or twice a week. As the snake gets bigger,
it’s cheaper to feed it larger rodents than a lot
of small ones.
Your snake will shed its skin as it grows.
Young snakes may shed as often as once
a month, and a healthy snake will shed a
complete skin including the scales over its
eyes. This is a good indication that you’re
doing everything right!
There are many excellent books that can
provide further information about the care
and maintenance of a snake, and many
websites that can address your specific
questions and concerns. Your local pet store is
also ready to advise you.
Enjoy your new pet snake!
Love, the Second Time Around
The cat refused to smile at the squirrel who delivered his cream. He
was right to be grumpy – the cream was bland. Scowling, he dumped
in sugar and stirred. Nobody has good cream anymore, he thought. In
fact, the cat had not had a good bowl of cream since 1997 – about the
time his relationship with Edna had ended. It was better for both of
them. They only made each other miserable. Fortunately, they were
kitten-less, so the dividing-up of property (mainly balls of yarn and
cans of catnip) was accomplished with little disagreement. Sighing
regretfully while unsuccessfully trying to smooth the cowlick on his
forehead, the cat unfolded the morning newspaper and scanned the
headlines.
The news seemed old – more war, more debt, less food, less water
– he grumbled and crumpled the paper into a wad and prepared to
toss it into the recycling bin. A reddish-pink sparkle caught his eye
and he paused to get a better look. On the back page of the paper
among ads for feline waxing, otter massages, and horseshoeing, the
cat read a small paragraph entitled “Love, the Second Time Around.’
The paragraph was wrapped in a fancy double-border and penned in
flowery script that provided sweetness for the eyes.
[ ]
Alone this Valentine’s? You shouldn’t be!
Come join the fun and meet gaggles,
herds, and packs of all kinds!
The rest of the ad contained an address and time. The cat raised his
left eyebrow with skepticism. “Looks like one of those multi-species
events,” he snorted to himself.
Tossing the mangled paper into the bin, the cat slurped the remaining
cream (now warm), and huffed into the street. It was true that
Valentine’s Day was quickly approaching – this Friday, in fact – and
the cat, as usual, had no plans.
“Even if I wanted to go out – it sure wouldn’t be on a Friday!” the cat
assured himself. “You would have to be a fool to go out on Valentine’s,
especially on a Friday!” Satisfied, he forgot about the ad and went to
work.
The cat had worked in receiving at the local kitty litter factory for the
last 15 years. He made sure incoming orders were accounted for and
outgoing orders were labeled correctly. At noon he pushed aside his
books and cracked a can of sardines. Just as he was about to take a bite
a few of the younger cats from the shipping department passed his
office door, laughing loudly. One of the workers named Tiger stopped
and poked his head and ears into the cat’s office.
“What’s goin’ on, Julien?” the young one grinned.
“Harrumph!” Julien replied, nibbling a sardine head, trying to ignore
the brazen kitten.
James Maughan
“You got a hot date for Valentine’s?” Tiger asked, entering the room.
Julien frowned and reluctantly placed the sardine on his desk. “Even if
I wanted a hot date - which I don’t,” he assured, wiping his paws on a
napkin, “I certainly wouldn’t talk about it with you!”
“Hey, hey, hey! No worries, old cat! Me and the kitties were talking
about doing a group thing, and I was just wondering if you wanted to
go!”
Eyeing the young, tiger-striped feline with a combination of scorn and
disappointment, Julien shook his head and grumpily mewed, “Thanks,
but no thanks!” and resumed his sardine munching.
“All right, Catty-O, but if you change your mind here’s a flier,” the
youngster placed a reddish-pink paper on the corner of Julien’s desk,
and ran to lunch with rest of the crew.
Julien tried to ignore the glowing double-border and the pink italic
font, but he finally gave in and swept up the flier with his claws. Just as
he suspected – it was an ad for the same “love gathering” as he had seen
in the paper this morning. With the paper in one paw, cleaning his teeth
with the other, he contemplated the offer.
Truthfully, Julien had nothing going on this weekend, other than
catching up on his self-cleaning and basking in the front window.
Friday nights consisted of checking the corners of his house and raking
the litter box.
“Why do they have to rub it in?” Julien protested loudly as he raked.
“Maybe I would go out if I had someone, but I don’t. No reason to make
me feel even worse!”
That night, as Julien watched the news, he remembered the flier. He had
told himself that love was over. Edna was his last serious companion. He
had no desire to start up a new colony, or even expand his pillow. Why
try to start over? It’s only going to end in rejection!
The next morning, while purchasing a creamsicle from the vending
machine, Julien noticed Tiger sitting alone on his phone at the break
table. Observing the kitten’s hipster magazine and skinny tie, Julien
wrinkled his nose and turned toward the door.
“Yo! Hoolio!” Tiger yelled, dropping his cellphone.
Julien stopped and rolled his eyes. Half turning, he said, “Yes?”
Tiger leapt over the table and pounced on Julien. “You’ve got to come
out with us this Friday!” he declared. “I talked to my Toms and they’re
in!”
Love, the Second Time Around Continued...
“Your ‘Toms’?” Julien quizzed.
“You know, my homecats!” Tiger said. “You gotta come out with us – I
got the perfect hook-up for you!”
Without thinking, Julien whipped his tail and sniffed, “All right – but
I’m not paying for anything, and I’m not promising anything!”
“Sweet! Meet us at BrewCats at 6!” cried Tiger triumphantly as he
tossed open the door and sped down the hall.
Watching him go, Julien suddenly realized what he had committed to.
For a second he considered stopping Tiger, but he hesitated just long
enough that he would have looked like a fool to cancel. He sighed and
accepted his fate.
The next day was Friday and Julien awoke 5 minutes before his 7 o’
clock alarm. Wide-eyed, he lay on his back and contemplated the
weekend. “It’s not too late to tell him I can’t come,” Julien reasoned. “It
was silly of me to even consider it,” he continued to reason. But when
the alarm sounded, he sprang from the bed and excitedly washed
himself.
At the cream shop, Julien excitedly tapped his claw on
the table, smoothed his cowlick, and surveyed the
crowd. Invigorated, he was wondering if he
would meet anyone interesting that night.
Strange, he had never noticed what an
interesting crowd visited the shop. Several
badgers lounged over lap-tops in the back,
and a sparrow sipped tea near the door. A
couple of hoodied rats read poetry books
while a young owl in a bright red scarf
ordered coffee. Julien noticed immediately
that she tapped her talon nervously, as if she
was in a hurry.
He stopped tapping his claw and sipped his
cream. The owl’s tail feathers were longer than
usual and she had braided them with some sort of
shiny pink ribbon, making her look sort of bohemian.
Unconsciously, Julien sat back from his morning paper, and crossed
his legs – this owl was beautiful. The chipmunk barrista finished the
order and announced the price. The owl began nervously digging
through her owl-bag and turned it sideways.
Personal belongings poured out. Old receipts, compacts, and beakglosses
cascaded over the floor. Instinctively, Julien leapt to the rescue.
He began sweeping up bird-stuff as the owl fluttered around the register.
“Here’s your stuff, ma’am,” Julien offered, his arms full of stuff. The
owl alighted and thanked him. “I’m sorry I’m so clumsy,” the beaked
princess blushed. “I don’t usually carry so much, and I don’t come to
this store, and…” she mumbled.
“It’s no problem,” Julien assured her, suddenly self-conscious, as he
smoothed his cowlick. “My name is Julien, what’s your name?”
The owl, still blushing, said, “My name’s Rachel, nice to meet you.”
She looked into his eyes and smiled. Julien smiled back. Rachel
blinked and turned to continue arranging her owl bag. Bravely, Julien
straightened himself and clearing his throat asked, “Would you like to
join me?” motioning toward his table.
“Oh! No. See, I have to go, but, it was really nice to meet you!” clearly
flustered, Rachel clumsily tightened her scarf, swept her owl bag over
her wing and hopped toward the door. Clutching her beverage in her
talons, she glanced back at Julien, winked, and said, “Thank you… I’ll
see you around!” and vanished into the street.
Julien stood for a moment, unsure what to do. When he realized he
was in everyone’s way, he returned to his seat and sipped his cream.
Every so often, while pretending to read the paper, he glanced out the
window and down the street where Rachel had fled.
“Of course she wouldn’t want to sit with me,” he reasoned, “I’m a cat,
she’s a bird!” He did like the way she blushed and how her cheeks
matched her scarf. And her talons were manicured like oriental lilies.
“Never mind,” he disappointingly shrugged, and headed to work. All
day he avoided Tiger, but near closing time, they ran into each other
in the litter room.
“So we gonna get crazy tonight?” Tiger shouted from across the
room, while pawing the gravel.
“Yeah, I don’t know… I’ve got a lot to do,” mumbled
Julien, his tail swishing nervously.
“Don’t worry – it’ll be great!” assured Tiger,
leaping over. “Wear a nice tie and smooth
your fur,” he licked his paw and attempted
to flatten Julien’s cowlick. Julien batted him
away.
“I’ll be there!” he sputtered. Forgetting he
had to relieve himself, he trudged back to his
office and gathered up his belongings.
At home, he cleaned himself thoroughly and
attempted, as Tiger had, to flatten his cowlick.
No luck. Julien scrutinized himself in the
mirror. Other than a touch of gray on his whiskers, he didn’t look
too bad. He had avoided catfights and excessive catnip his whole life –
and was in pretty good health.
BrewCats was lively, as usual, for a Friday night. Julien could hear cats
whining and hissing in the side alley as he entered through the front
door. Tiger was in his face right away.
“You made it! I knew you would!” Tiger warmly led him to a table
of tomcats who looked like they had been dressed by a little girl and
rolled in the dirt. They proudly sported ribbons around the necks, but
the ribbons were tattered and the knots were granny. Their claws were
extremely clipped and a couple wore socks on their heads, with one
GOODBYE
SAYING
Millie: A Tribute to Friendship 1998 - 2012
When I was diagnosed with Stage 1B
breast cancer, a friend advised me
to walk daily. So, in Forrest Gump
fashion, I walked in our neighborhood
and others, through a canyon and by
rivers. Since March 2011, I’ve kept a
rough record of distances covered.
Incrementally, these days, weeks, and
months, plus the miles walked have
been my cancer journey.
Under the influence of chemo, I
walked with swollen legs, a veering
gait, numb feet and hands, anemia,
liver enzymes 3x normal (a sign of
the intended, yet indiscriminate cell
death), ringing ears, a mental fog,
and stiff and sore muscles and joints.
Without fail, I walked twice a day.
Our Northern breed dog, Millie, saw
to that.
Even when chemo ended, its side
effects began and recovery took over
a year, a function mostly of extended,
higher dosages. Medications for
breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer
treatments are known to be the
harshest of all the so-called dense
protocols.
And yet, during this time, I walked
on with my cell phone, a tissue for
my drippy nose (I’d lost my nasal hair
from chemo), and a few dog biscuits.
The biscuits were for Millie and other
canine friends we passed. I especially
enjoyed when I could toss a biscuit
from 20 feet away directly into a black
lab’s mouth. Years of softball paid off.
And then, after one final walk during
a beautiful snow, our 13 1/2 yearold
faithful friend, Millie, became
ill through the night. My husband
and I cried as we held her face in
our hands one last time as her vet
compassionately put her down. On
March 3, 2012, she passed “over to
the other side” peaceably while I sang,
“O God, Our Help in ages past,” the
first hymn that came to mind in grief,
also sung at Churchill’s funeral. A few
quiet tears flowed, then . . . “Our hope
for years to come. . . .” Deep sigh.
“Our shelter from the stormy blast. . .
.” Now we rose to go home. “And our
eternal home…” As we exited the vet
clinic, a red-faced man carried in his
aged dog. Oh, how it hurts.
Later that day, I headed out on my
walk sans my cherished chemo
companion. I could not find the
pace Millie always established for
me. Rather than going the pace of
her fast walk. . . I just ran. . . ran
to the bottom of the hill before
slowing to a walk.
How could I continue these walks
without my loyal furry friend? I felt
a deep, aching emptiness. But I still
put one foot in front of
the other, sometimes even
loosely holding my left
hand out as if Millie were
somehow with me.
Beyond what these walks
already were, they became
a symbol: a Tribute to
Friendship. As best as I
could, I lock-stepped in
how I recall Millie pacing
me in all the years together.
And the miles
added up, to over
a thousand since
my diagnosis.
Goodbye at Home
Oscar James Warren Aug 1999 - Dec 19, 2012
13 years ago I held this
sweet angel for the first
time. He was nothing but
paws and ears, and snot
(he always suffered from
allergies). On December
19th, I held him while he
took his last breath in this
world. The pain I feel now
is outweighed only by the
constant joy Oscar brought
to my life. He taught me
so much about tolerance,
patience, and acceptance.
I loved him the moment
I saw him and I love him
still. He will always be in
my heart. Oscar you were the best
cat anyone could ask for. Tell Foley
hello from me, and keep him warm
and don’t worry I will look after
Georgie. I love you my angel. Oscar
is survived by his younger fur sisters
Pumpkin & Georgianna, and his
feathered siblings Frank & Ruby.
He is preceded in death by his fur
Love, the Second Time Around Continued...
ear showing, the footies trailing on the floor.
“What’s the plan?” Julien ignored the trendy slobs while he motioned
over a gecko in glasses wearing an apron.
Tiger excitedly explained that they were going to hit up the ‘second time
around’ Valentines extravaganza, and then head over to the lake for
some midnight fishing.
“I thought you said you had a ‘hook-up’ for me?” asked Julien, as he
ordered a cream lite.
“Yeah, my sister’s co-worker is single, and she’ll be there too!” Tiger
assured him.
Julien gulped his beverage, and the group went to the party.
The rendezvous was set in an abandoned warehouse by the pier – a
place Julien usually avoided. Too many cats ended up ‘downriver.’ As
Julien entered the backdoor, he noticed candlelight and balloons.
“Yeah, it must be Valentine’s,” he growled, to no one in
particular, but a couple of mice in a shoebox raised their
glasses and squeaked in agreement.
Crates and boxes and benches
were arranged in a semi-circle
facing a makeshift stage
where a bluegrass band
fiddled and strummed.
Every kind of animal was in
attendance. Julien saw beavers
and dogs, hamsters and porcupines,
and even a few foxes. Foxes tend to
keep to themselves, but some are
adventurous.
In any case, the atmosphere was
warm and accepting, and Julien began
to relax with his new friends. After
about twenty minutes, an officiallooking
aardvark lumbered onto the
stage and asked for everyone’s
attention.
“Females and males…it is
my pleasure to introduce
the star of the evening,
an owl who needs no
introduction – Rachel!”
Julien was shocked to see the owl from
this morning enter from behind the curtain.
She was still wearing her red scarf, as well as a glowing
ruby necklace.
Nervously, she approached center stage and hooted, “Good evening.
Thank you for having us. This is dedicated to all the lovers-to-be,” to
the crowd. She nodded to her band in the corner, a weasel, a raccoon,
and a pot-bellied pig, and raised her wings. Julien’s heart stopped.
The band launched into a thumping version of every romantic
hit since music was invented. At least that’s what Julien heard. He
couldn’t take his eyes off Rachel, fluttering and warbling about the
stage. When she strutted, he grinned. When she crooned, he cried.
When she laughed, he laughed. Finally, the set ended and the band
took a break.
Tiger grabbed Julien’s shoulder, “That’s my sister’s friend – isn’t she
great?”
Julien nodded, “You know her?” as Tiger led him toward the back of
the stage.
“You want to meet her?” Tiger asked.
“Yeah,” Julien nodded.
“Even though she’s an owl?” Tiger raised an eyebrow.
“Definitely.”
Rachel was seated at a vanity with lots of colorful lights.
She nervously adjusted her scarf when Julien and Tiger
walked in.
“Oh!” she gasped. “It’s you!”
“You’re Rachel, right?” Julien stammered.
Tiger looked at them both and smiled and
ducked into the hallway.
“I’m sorry if I was rude this morning,”
said Rachel, half-hiding her beak behind
her wing.
“I’m more comfortable on stage than in
person…”
“That’s okay – I don’t normally talk to
anybody,” Julien admitted. “I really liked your
show…”
“Thanks,” Rachel said. “Listen, can I take you up on that
offer and join you out front?”
“I would love that,” Julien said, grinning.
Paw in wing, they headed to a table. “I like
your cowlick,” said Rachel.
“Thanks,” Julien glowed.
