Many of our readers have rescued <strong>the</strong>ir companion animal or animals<br />

from a local shelter or one of <strong>the</strong> many amaz<strong>in</strong>g rescue organizations<br />

<strong>in</strong> Utah. But for some of us, right now isn’t <strong>the</strong> best time to adopt a<br />

companion animal or for o<strong>the</strong>rs, you’re at your capacity to adopt any<br />

more. So how can you help <strong>the</strong> thousands of animals <strong>in</strong> desperate<br />

need of assistance?<br />

Our local shelters and rescue groups are not only <strong>in</strong> need of guardians<br />

to give homeless animals a forever home, but are also <strong>in</strong> need of people<br />

to foster, volunteer, or donate.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> extremely generous animal lovers out <strong>the</strong>re who want to<br />

help, but don’t know where to start, here is a list of a few of <strong>the</strong> many<br />

wonderful local organizations who would greatly appreciate any time,<br />

money, or items you have to offer:<br />

The Humane Society of Utah is a non-<br />

profit organization that relies solely on<br />

donations to help <strong>the</strong> homeless pets of Utah. Along with a cont<strong>in</strong>ual<br />

need for monetary donations, HSU could also use any time you have<br />

to volunteer at <strong>the</strong> shelter, and any of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g items:<br />

• Kitten milk replacement (KMR)<br />

• Newspaper (for l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g animal cages)<br />

• Puppy milk replacement (Esbilac)<br />

• Cat Food<br />

• Dog Food<br />

• Paper towels<br />

• Polar Fleece blankets and towels (to provide softer bedd<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

• Latex Gloves — large, medium, and small (for clean<strong>in</strong>g soiled<br />

cages, soiled laundry, and for medical purposes)<br />

Any items for donation can be dropped off at <strong>the</strong> shelter Monday<br />

through Sunday dur<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess hours. For more <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

on adoption, volunteer<strong>in</strong>g, or a full donation wish list visit<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>g Farm Sanctuary & Rescue<br />

<strong>in</strong> Herriman houses and cares for<br />

dozens of farm animals that would o<strong>the</strong>rwise have been slaughtered.<br />

To keep <strong>the</strong> farm safe and healthy for <strong>the</strong> rescued animals, <strong>the</strong>y need<br />

help <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of tax-deductible donations, volunteers, and donated<br />

items, such as:<br />

• Bags of gra<strong>in</strong> (usually comes <strong>in</strong> 50 lbs):<br />

o chicken scratch<br />

o cracked corn<br />

o rolled corn (or rolled C.O.B.)<br />

• Used (clean) or new blankets<br />

• P<strong>in</strong>e shav<strong>in</strong>gs (for bedd<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

• Clean, dry bales of straw<br />

• New (or used <strong>in</strong> great shape) toys for dogs, horses and pigs.<br />

• Canned cat food<br />

• M<strong>in</strong>eral blocks (for goats, horses, llamas)<br />

Paws for Life is a non-profit organization <strong>in</strong><br />

Heber <strong>City</strong> that helps f<strong>in</strong>d forever homes for<br />

surrendered, lost, and abandoned dogs, cats, and<br />

horses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Heber Valley. They also help to ensure <strong>the</strong> animals that<br />

come <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Heber shelter are immunized, spayed, and neutered, as<br />

well as help pay for <strong>the</strong> medical costs of sick animals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shelter. In<br />

addition to volunteer time and foster<strong>in</strong>g, Paws for Life would greatly<br />

appreciate any donations of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g items:<br />

• Dog leashes<br />

• Collars<br />

• Dog treats<br />

• Cat Litter (clay)<br />

• Small towels<br />

• Cat or Dog Carriers<br />

• Clean<strong>in</strong>g Supplies<br />

Animals<br />

The Avian Sanctuary and Protection is a<br />

non-profit organization that helps rescue and<br />

rehabilitates any bird <strong>in</strong> need of <strong>the</strong>ir assistance<br />

here <strong>in</strong> Utah. ASAP also provides educational courses to <strong>the</strong> community,<br />

as well as helps to provide improvements to publically accessible local<br />

bird habitats. To cont<strong>in</strong>ue to provide <strong>the</strong>se wonderful community<br />

services and to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> health and safety of <strong>the</strong> birds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir care,<br />

ASAP is <strong>in</strong> need of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:
