The Humane Society of Utah regards this practice as inhumane and dangerous...not only to the dog that is confined, but for other animals and humans as well. Dogs continuously chained can become bored, frustrated, anxious, neurotic, and agitated. Some actually suffer from collars becoming embedded in their neck. Understandably, dogs living in this condition often become aggressive. While all animal welfare groups would prefer to see a total ban on tethering it is the belief of the HSU’s new coalition that a 10 hour time limit would reasonably allow people who are employed sufficient time to go to work and return home to take their dog off the tether. At the same time, it has become an all too common occurrence in Utah where dogs are often seen locked in parked cars on hot or extremely cold days. In a matter of minutes, a dog can suffer heat stroke in a vehicle with interior temperatures exceeding 75 degrees. Unlike humans, dogs do not have the ability to sweat and reduce body temperature. This has led to countless tragedies, many of them documented (“Heat Kills Dog Left In Truck by Owner”-Salt Lake Tribune June 6, 2006...”Labrador Dies of Heat Stroke in Parked Car”- Deseret News July 13, 2005). Fortunately, a handful of Utah communities have already passed ordinances with provisions preventing people from leaving dogs in vehicles for prolonged periods of time and Protecting Utah’s Animals Continued... allowing law enforcement officials to act once they are made aware of such situations. The Humane Society of Utah and its coalition of national animal welfare groups would now like to see a state law enacted to protect Utah dogs placed in this lifethreatening situation. The third bill backed by Senator Davis would prohibit the sale or distribution of dogs (specifically puppies) in public areas such as shopping mall parking lots, etc. In the past few years, pups being sold in front of “big box” stores have become a frequent sight. Typically, these dogs are unsterilized and are often unhealthy. Purchased on an impulse, the well-intentioned buyers may soon realize the dog is ill, carries a disease or has genetic defects. The Humane Society of Utah frequently receives calls from distraught purchasers who are now confronted with the parvovirus, autoimmune diseases and a variety of physical maladies. Sadly, many of these animals end up in shelters where the best or only option is to humanely euthanize the puppy and end it’s suffering. The law which is being proposed would keep these parking lot puppy merchants (who may pay no sales tax and typically cannot be contacted after the sale) from selling or giving away puppies or mature dogs in public places. First time offenders would receive a $250.00 fine while second time offenders would be guilty of a misdemeanor violation which would carry a fine not to exceed $1,000.00. This legislation would not only protect puppies, but well meaning citizens who purchase on an impulse, only to suffer financial and emotional hardship when the dog becomes sick and they are confronted with medical bills and the possibility that the pup they’ve fallen in love with may have to be put to sleep. Legislators value their constituents’ opinions and passage of a bill is often tied directly to the feedback they receive from the people who voted them into office. Ching Farm Jennafer Martin Rescue & Sanctuary When Faith and Mike Ching moved to their new Herriman home on five sprawling acres in 1998, they intended to use the extra room for their rescued cats. “The house was set in on the property and the neighborhood was safe with roads that weren’t busy. We thought it would give the cats lots of land to roam on,” says Faith. Today, though, you’ll see a wider variety of animals than cats if you visit the Chings. With chickens, goats, cows, horses, pigs, sheep and more, the Ching home has become the Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary – the only licensed farm animal rescue organization in Utah. The Chings live amidst their rescued animals on a sprawling, five-acre farm in Herriman. It started with the Chings taking in a pot-bellied pig, then a goat or two. Soon, word got out that there was a safe haven for farm animals, and the rescue grew from there. Before long, the Ching Farm became a safe haven for animals that would have otherwise gone to slaughter, and a non-profit rescue, advocating for farm animals and providing adoption services and education about cruelty-free living. Animals from all over Utah and neighboring states find their way to this farm sanctuary from individuals, shelters, research labs, feedlots and more. The Ching Farm Sanctuary & Rescue welcomes visitors and volunteers year-round. Visitors, including families, school groups, and Scout troops, regularly come for tours to learn about the farm and its animals. They learn about caring for the animals, as well as the names and unique stories of the animals. Two of the newest animals that visitors encounter are Laverne and Shirley, two farm piglets who came to the farm after being found in a box on the side of a road. With the kindness of volunteer donations of money and time, these two piglets are thriving. Farm piglets Laverne and Shirley are two of the newest rescue animals at Ching Farm. To provide a safe, healthy place for Laverne, Shirley, and the other animals to live and thrive, the farm depends on an army of volunteers, who work hard each day to keep the animals’ pens and stalls clean and feed them. Vet tech students regularly visit to perform vaccinations and exercise the horses. And regular folks from all over the Salt Lake Valley willingly give their time to keep the farm running and the animals safe and well. The farm greatly depends on the time and donations of volunteers to keep it thriving.
