foliage and we suggest you take
this opportunity to see Boston and the surrounding area during
this season. There is easy access to nearby restaurants,
shuttle bus service to local shopping malls, and paths along
the Charles River for walking and jogging. Public transportation
to all of Boston and Cambridge via the “T” is readily
accessible to visit Faneuil Hall, Harvard Square, Fenway Park,
A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORS
Dear Colleague,
As a primary care practitioner you are faced with many infectious disease related issues that
directly impact your patients' care. We understand that; so we have designed this course with your
needs in mind. This year's course is unlike any other, in addition to the wide variety of general ID
topics, as always, this year we are offering updated and new lectures, including breakout sessions
and new lectures on antibiotics and vaccine development.
As you would expect, the faculty for this course are the leading authorities in their field, who will
present on topics such as:
• Immunizations Update for the PCP
• HIV Disease in Primary Medicine
• Lyme Borreliosis: Update 2008
We encourage you to attend this conference to connect with leading ID specialists involved in a
variety of clinical practice settings. The enclosed program outlines the topics and faculty we have
assembled to achieve our stated objectives, listed to the right.
We look forward to seeing you in October!
Sincerely,
Course directors
Paul E. Sax, MD Lindsey R. Baden, MD Sigal Yawetz, MD Robert H. Rubin, MD
This clinically oriented course is designed specifically for
the primary care practitioner interested in an update on the
diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of common infectious
diseases of adults. It provides a comprehensive overview of
infections seen in ambulatory practice with an emphasis on
areas of controversy and new developments in the field.
Lectures and case presentation will focus on challenging
problems in the out- and in-patient management of infections
of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary tracts;
sexually transmitted diseases; viral illnesses; and other
commonly encountered infectious diseases. Modern
approaches to diagnosis and the rational use of new and
old antimicrobial agents will be discussed. Special attention
will be given to the prevention of infections by immunization
or antimicrobial prophylaxis. Throughout, the
emphasis will be on topics with practical applications to
patient management, with frequent integration of case histories
into didactic material.
Over 90% of the course participants rated this course as
“superior” or “above average” as compared to other postgraduate
courses they have attended, placing this course
among the highest-rated of Harvard CME courses (over
250 courses annually). Participants cited in particular its
attention to practical issues in patient management with
frequent inclusion of well-chosen case illustrations and
anecdotes—as well as the ample opportunity for interaction
with the faculty.
• Skin, Soft Tissue, and Nail Infections
• Advice to Travelers
• New Antibiotics
At the conclusion of this program,
the participant will be able to:
Understand and apply principles of preventive
care as they relate to infectious diseases,
specifically in the context of screening,
vaccinations, and prophylactic antimicrobial
therapy
Appreciate the range of infectious disease diagnoses
in both the ambulatory and the hospitalbased
clinical settings
Initiate an appropriate diagnostic evaluation,
as well as accurately interpret information
received from the clinical microbiology
laboratory
Select effective and cost-effective antimicrobial
therapy for a wide variety of commonly
encountered infectious diseases of adults
