Course Objectives<br />
This course is designed for the practicing<br />
Pulmonologist and Chest Surgeon, as well as<br />
other health care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals interested in the<br />
topic. <strong>The</strong> course is intentionally limited to a<br />
small number <strong>of</strong> participants to allow for<br />
maximum benefit <strong>of</strong> small groups in the handson<br />
sessions. <strong>The</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> the course is<br />
to review pertinent pleural physiology and<br />
minimally invasive procedures useful in the<br />
diagnosis and therapeutic intervention <strong>of</strong> pleural<br />
diseases. At the conclusion, participants will<br />
have a good understanding <strong>of</strong> the work-up <strong>of</strong><br />
pleural effusions, the indications, contraindications<br />
and patient selection for procedures such<br />
as closed pleural biopsy, pleural manometry,<br />
chest tube placement, PleurX catheter management<br />
and medical thoracoscopy. All procedures<br />
will have been practiced on animal models.<br />
<strong>The</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> this course include:<br />
• review principles <strong>of</strong> pleural disease<br />
• review the continuum <strong>of</strong> invasive work-up<br />
<strong>of</strong> pleural diseases<br />
• obtain skills to perform pleuroscopy<br />
