Shortly before Christmas, most German children have another reason to
celebrate. December 6 is Nikolaustag, in honor of Saint Nicholas, the fourthcentury
bishop. Read a brief description of how Jasmin used to celebrate this
day when she was little. Does your family celebrate this holiday? If yes, do you
celebrate it the same way as Jasmin?

to research this a bit on the Internet! Hint #1: part of the answer depends on a distinction between
Northern and Southern Germany. Hint #2: Jasmin’s family is from the North, but her dad is from the
South, and they mixed traditions a bit.

Am 6. Dezember kam bei uns immer der Nikolaus. Am Abend vor
dem 6. Dezember haben mein Bruder und ich immer unsere Stiefel
geputzt und sie vor die Haustür gestellt. Der Nikolaus ist nämlich
immer in der Nacht gekommen und hat die sauberen Stiefel mit
Süßigkeiten und kleinen Geschenken gefüllt, wenn die Kinder im
letzten Jahr sehr „brav“ gewesen sind. Er sieht ein bisschen
aus wie der Weihnachtsmann, ist aber eine ganz andere Person.
Bei uns kam aber statt des Weihnachtsmanns zu Weihnachten
sowieso das Christkind, daher konnte man den Nikolaus nie mit
dem Weihnachtsmann verwechseln. Aber wenn man im letzten
Jahr „unartig” gewesen ist oder die Stiefel nicht tadellos sauber
waren, dann gab es vom Nikolaus keine Geschenke, sondern nur
eine Rute. Deshalb hatten mein Bruder und ich am 5. Dezember
trotz aller Vorfreude auch immer etwas Angst, dass der Nikolaus
uns nur eine Rute bringen würde. Zum Glück ist das jedoch nie
vorgekommen!
