Purpose
A park’s purpose is a statement of why
Congress or the president established
the area as a unit of the National Park
System. The purpose of Kennesaw
Mountain National Battlefi eld Park
contains elements of both preservation
and interpretation:
Preservation:
Preserve and protect the battlefi eld
for memorial and military study
purposes, including the erection
of monuments, preservation and
identifi cation of earthworks, and
creation of regulations as necessary
to protect and preserve the
battlefi eld and other appropriate
sites.
Memorialize and commemorate
Kennesaw Mountain and the
Atlanta Campaign.
Acquire land for the Battlefi eld
and battle features to perfect the
symmetry of the park.
Preserve and protect the Kennesaw
Mountain National Battlefi eld Park
as a public park for the benefi t and
inspiration of the people.
This Union earthwork is one of the fragile
resources which interpretation strives to
protect.
Interpretation:
Educate the public about the
Battle of Kennesaw Mountain and
the Atlanta Campaign, and their
signifi cance in the broader context
of the Civil War.
Educate the public about the causes
of the Civil War, and the important
impacts that the War’s outcome has
had upon American history.
Increase public understanding and
respect for the role of that slavery
played as a cause of the Civil War,
the war’s consequences for the
African American population, and
this nation’s continued struggles for
Civil Rights.
Acquaint the public with the
signifi cance of the park as the
site of major historic structures
and archeological sites relating
to antebellum settlement, the
Civil War, and Native American
occupation.
The Battlefi eld’s purpose is to preserve and
protect the Kennesaw Mountain National
Battlefi eld Park as a public park for the
benefi t and inspiration of the people.
