builDinG PerMiTs
Permits are required for a number of different projects in order to
assure that these projects meet applicable Building Codes . The City of
Des Plaines has adopted Building Codes in order to protect the health,
safety and welfare of our residents .
Building permits are required for building construction, alterations,
sheds, fences, decks and stairs, roofing, doors and windows, concrete,
asphalt, or paver brick driveways, sidewalks, patios, stoops and
stairs, siding, new electric service, low voltage alarms and phone
wiring, plumbing, sewer repair, extensive interior remodeling,
swimming pools, spas and hot tubs, heating and air conditioning,
grading changes, retention walls or other landscaping involving
topographical changes, demolitions, shoring and foundation repairs,
signs, banners and tents and fire sprinklers .
All permits may be applied for at the City of Des Plaines Building
Department at 1420 Miner St ., Room 301 . Any projects costing over
Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce and industry
$15,000 will require stamped architectural plans . All permit
applications require a current Plat of Survey . Licensed, bonded and
insured contractors are required for many types of permits .

laWn WaTerinG resTriCTions
The City has in effect a Water Conservation Ordinance that is in
effect annually from May 15–September 15 . If using something other
than a hand-held watering device or a sprinkling can, the following
restrictions apply:
• Even number addresses on even numbered calendar days
• Odd number addresses on odd numbered calendar days
Hours are from 5:00 a .m .–8:00 a .m . and 7:00 p .m .–10:00 p .m .
in both cases . This applies to both residential users as well as
commercial accounts . Violators will be fined .
GarbaGe, reCyClinG anD yarD WasTe
All carts and items must be placed at the curb before 6 a .m . on
collection day to ensure proper collections .
refuse: All trash must be placed in designated cart .
recycle: All recycling must be placed in designated cart and does
not need to be separated . Accepted items include: aluminum cans,
clean foil, trays, tin/steel/bi-metal cans, empty aerosol cans, clear,
green, blue and brown glass, #1-5 and #7 plastics, newspapers, junk
mail, magazines, brown paper bags, phone books, catalogs, typing
and computer paper, cardboard boxes and gift boxes. Corrugated
cardboard must be flattened or cut into 2’ x 2’ pieces.
not accepted: Plastic grocery bags, window glass, ceramics, light
bulbs, drinking glasses, dishes or Pyrex products or Styrofoam and
polystyrene plastics (#6) .
yard Waste: April 2 –December 7
Includes grass clippings, leaves, plant clipping, twigs, small branches
and brush, NO fruits, vegetables, dirt or roots . Must be placed in
32-gal container with handles, marked with a 12-inch red “X” around
the body of the container and must not exceed 50 lbs. or in 2-ply Kraft
yard waste paper bags that are not torn and do not exceed 50 lbs.
DO NOT place yard waste in plastic bags, cardboard boxes or in
designated garbage containers .

computers, construction debris, florescent light bulbs, motor oil paint
(latex only), "Technotrash" and tires (no rims), please check with the
