On the national front, President
Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail
Gorbachev met in Geneva for
more than fifteen hours, the first
superpower summit for more than
six years. President Reagan later
stated that the U.S. and the
U.S.S.R. understood each other
better, although fundamental divi-
sions remain on the most impor-
tant issues:human rights, confron-
tations in the Third World and
arms control.
On the local front. Pennsylvania
lawmakers reviewed the mental
health provisions in response to a
recent shooting at a suburban
Philadelphia mall. Danville State
Hospital treats its first AIDS pa-
tient. Penn State University asked
lawmakers to increase its 1986-87
appropriations by 18.6 percent
over the last year.

In December, the Pope and the
world's bishops gathered to
celebrate the twentieth anniver-
sary of Vatican Council 11. In addi-
tion to ceremonies, the group
debated the issue: will liberals or
conservatives guide the church in-
to the next century.
Carnegie Mellon University announced
a delay of at least a year
of the school's goal of a computer
in every dorm room because of

Room by offering soups and
select salads. The performing Arts
Series sponsored "The Nutcracker,"
performed by the
Wiikes-Barre ballet company as
