January began with bad news
and ended in national disaster.
Libya presented a touchy problem
for the United States, the culprit
suspected for terrorist bombings
In Rome and Vienna. President
Reagan verbally insulted Libya's
Gaddafi by calling him a "bar-
barian" and then tightening sanc-
tions toward Libya. Disaster
struck the nation when the space
shuttle Challenger exploded, kill-
ing six astronauts and New Hamp-
shire schoolteacher Christie
McAulliffe. The disaster was a ma-
jor setback for the space program
and raised basic questions about
the future of manned space ex-
ploration. President Reagan ap-
painted a special Rogers Cornrnis-
sions to study the reasons for the
Challenger's fiery nightmare.
Also in the news, Senator Gary
Hart announced that he will not
run for re-election in Colorado
since he looks forward to the
White House in 1988. Republican
Bob Dole, the Senate Majority
Leader, also decided to run for the
Presidency. Most airlines offer
cut-rate fares for their passengers
, making travel most appealing.
On Wall Street the Dow Jones
Average dropped 39.10 points in
one day, thereby beating the
marked drop in 1929 known as
the memorable Black Wednesday.
Locally. Montour county decid-
ed to rescind its recycling program
because the once profitable pro-
gram is now losing money. Gover-
nor Thornburgh announced two
appointments to his policy and
planning administration; Robert C.
Benku and Harold D. Miller. The
Pennsylvania House legislative
committee agreed to allow public
access to details of House
members exuense accounts.
February
February began with the U.S.
challenging Gaddafi by holding
naval maneuvers off Libya's
disputed maritime border -
nicknamed by Gaddafi "the line of
death". Saudi Arabia's oil pump-
ing started global price wars. A

pose little or no risk to their close
family. Another cyanide laced
Tylenol scare followed a death in
New York. Soviet dissident
Anatoli Shcharansky returned to
his homeland for a reunion with

The Philippines, faced with a
growing communist insurgency
and a faltering economy, drew in-
ternational attention. The Phiiip-
pine election amid fraud and
violence initially ended in a stan-
doff between Ferdinand Marcos
and Corazon Aquino. It was later
determined that Marcos fixed the
election. Then in a public uproar,
Marcos and his family were forced
to flee the country, along with
their falsely accumulated riches.
