In local news. State Legislators announced that they have been receiving inmate complaints alleging beatings, torture and racial discrimination. Falling oil prices caused the extinction of a plan to build an electrical cogenerator plant and greenhouse in the Sharnokin area. in Sunbury, Beatrice Long was tried for the slaying of Patricia Gebhardt. At the University. Bucknell students c5allenged the validity of so called Nicaraguan Orlando Bolanos who purported that he was a co-founder of the contra movement. Bolanos, sponsored by the Bucknell Student Lectureship was later found to be an imposter. The Center Gallery hosted an especially popular collection this month, Andy Warhol prints and student art. The big news of May was the Soviet nuclear catastrophe from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant just north of Kiev. Viewed as the worst disaster in 32 years of commercial atomic power, the Soviets struggled to save face by not accepting foreign assistance. it seems that the Soviets kept the Chernobyl disaster a secret from their European neighbors, hoping to extinguish the life-threatening fire themselves. The fallout caused an international fury against the Soviet Union for its lax safety measures and its concealment of the dangerous radiation moving towards other countries. AIDS-Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome-looms large as both a medical and social problem in the United States. With a rising number of cases reported. AlDS presents a possible threat to society. Furthermore, the hysterical fear of catching AlDS from others could be almost as destructive as the disease itself. Kurt Waidheim. former Nazi, ran for the Austrian Presidency and won. A government study indicated that thirteen percent of all adults in the U.S. cannot read; and Coca Cola celebrated its centennial. The Pennsylvania Senate approved two bills allowing regional banks and savings associations. Snyder county announced that instead of paying a fine, each person charged with underage drinking, will be referred to a counseling program.
The Sweeney Committee. It began its investigation of the Greek system in the spring of 1984, before half of this year's student body was even on campus. Two years later, the impact of the Committee's deliberations and decisions hit the campus. The Com- mittee didn't know how strongly the Greeks would react to the new "social regulations" nor did the Greeks have much of an idea of how strict the new recommendations would be. When all was said and done, however, not much actually changed on the Greek scene. Yes, signs were required to be posted stating the "21 year old consumption age." live bands were to end at 12 a.m., and "the last call for alcohol" would be at 2 a.m. There were also some technical~ties, such as limiting parties to the legally listed capacity of the particular fraternity, but this had little effect. "invitation only" parties did not return to the social scene from the previous year, but freshmen, guys - and for the first time girls, too, were not allowed into fraternity parties until November. This change was a result of the Sweeney Committee's recommendations and the new structure for second semester dry rush for guys. The debate concerning the "new" fraternity rush was heated on campus, with some groups advocating it and others feeling that it hurt the fraternity system. Although rush didn't officially begin until second semester, many fraternitites held "informal" rush dur- ing first semester, feeling that formal rush was too GREEK LIFE short a time and too artificial a situation in which to choose a representative pledge class. Thls marked the first year that sorority and fraternity rush occurred simultaneously. The IFC and the Greek Council continue to debate the merits of this new rush program. Parties, in general, did seem more mellow this year. and maybe that was a general reflection of the sociai regulations. The entire campus was upset with the shut-down of House Party Weekend on Saturday night this year, another indicator of the stricter reguiations the police are trying to enforce on the Greek system and the student body In general. Outside of the social regulations, the Greek system experienced many internal changes on campus this year. Buckneli lost two Greek organizations while two others were reorganized. The Phi Mu sorority struggled to maintain its existence on campus but was ultimated closed by its national, as was Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity, whose charter was revoked. Theta Chi fraternity recolonized and struggled to grow, and Gamma Phi Beta sorority underwent an internal reorgan~zation to strengthen its membership. With all of the changes in the Greek system right now, it is not easy to see where it is all leading. Hopefully, the Greek system on campus will emerge stronger than ever, and the University will more fully realize the value of Greek organizations to the campus and community alike
