From the President
Irr the spring of 2002 issue I wrote about
the Deerhound being the dog of Three
Beauties, one of which was ternperament. I
would like now to elaborate a little on this
because I think ternperarnents have changed
since I had rny first hounds in the nineteen
fiftics.
Writirrg about tcrnperarnent is difficult
bcc:trrsc tll'thc ctrritlus British habit of
You orrly have to say that you are not keen
rln sornething for people to assulne
irnrnediately that you dislike it intensely, or such-and-such is attractive for
people to leap to the conclusion that it is an absolute essential viftue.
Bearing this caveat in mind, I will try to exprain what I mean when I say
that I think the Deerhound temperarnent has changed, but the reader rnust riot
hcrs rvcltl alicr shcep sltc would after the initial verbal reprimand, take it horne
and the possibility of finding a bad one is almost certainly less than in any
other breed. One would not criticize at all if the overall siandard were not so
very high.
I)I'ATHS
Strath died overnight at thc vcts' lirllowing an operation to remove a foreign
body. The old rascal had apparerrtly swallowed a plastic bag and it had got
stuck. The vet thinks it rnight have been there for several weeks, although Strath
was perfectly wellon Friday whcn I left forthe Committee meeting. However,
when I got back on Saturday evening, he was clearly unwell, although not desperately
so. t slept downstairs with him and he vomited several times during the
night. So I called the vet on Sunday morning and we had him on the drip by
early Sunday afternoon. He seemed to be doing well that evening, they had
X-rayed, saw a soft mass in his abdomen and opened him up to investigate. The
vet took out six feet of dead small intestine as well as the plastic bag and he
seemed to be recovering well, although the vet did make it clear that he was
very ill due to the toxins from the necrotic gut. I phoned and learned that he
hadn't made it through the night.
Strath was officially Killoeter Othello, bred by Nell and Seumas Caine, by
Killoeter Lachie out of Ch Rosslyn Carric and he was bom 23rd April 1993.
Tlere were eight in the litter and six of them made it to ten years of age. He had
one CC. from Pat Aird at Crufts 1999, and was a semi finalist at Dava first time
out. He did well coursing; although he never won a stake, he was a semi-finalist
several times. Above all, he was my dear dear old boy and I'm going to miss
hirn dreadfully. Sid
Our beautiful Deerhounds, Gandalf and Lily, died within 3 weeks of each
other. Candalf died at home within a few hours of picking up poison from an
unknown source. No doubt affected by the loss of her inseparable companion,
Lily quickly lost her uphill fight against a tumour.
candalf and Lily were not show dogs, just much loved menrbers of our famiry.
We just want people to know that they existed and of thejoy lhey brought to
us and everyone they met during their nine years of life. (iandall'was a big
dog, dignified and eccentric. Lily was regal in everythirrg. shc did. even in
dying. These two gentle creatures were our best friends. 'l hcir dcaths have left
a big gap and have made us realise what a privilegc it is to orrrr I)eerhounds
and what special animals they are. Mary l,cwis
THE NAG BAG
In the run up to her critiquc our
judge wrote "after consultatitln
with exhibitors it was agreed to
judge outside" I don't think so!!
There were at least 5 or 6 (mYself
included) exhibitors sitting within
a few yards of our allocated ring Pic. Natqlie Heathcote
when the judge went to inspect it-not one of
us was .onrult"d; althougltl am told that one exhibitor who was there
at the time of the inspection was offered a choice and she opted for
outside. Whippet people were much more lucky, their judge did
consult therrr(notlusi one person) and they ended up incorporating
their covered ring with the other adjacent Deerhound ring-not only
cooler but with u bigg"r ring than those of us who were frying outside'
The summer shows East of-England, WKC and Richmond allocated
Deerhounds in a covered ring.
I appreciate that some dogs need to
Mad Englishmen and Does Go Out In The Middav Sun
The old Noel Coward ditty was never so apposite as on the Sunday of the
Bournemouth dog show. As the sun soared to its apex on the hottest day ever
recorded in this country and the temperature went though the mercury levels. What
else were Deerhound folk to do but parade in the rrridday sun?
"....1n tropical climes there are certain times of day
We ourselves had made the trip to the Bournernouth show as our usual arrrrrlrl lr,rlr,l,r
The sun was beginning to beat down even at 9.00 atn we set off along lhc brrrrl.,, r't tlr,
puppy inquisitiveness saw his interest in sorne fish activity end up witlt irrr
Cath and rnyself began to fade. We decided to cut the walk short and lrcird blt l. lirr
night failed to bring any relief and Cath awoke at about 2.00am f'eeling rcallf ill
When morning came we both f-elt all we really wanted to do was to get honrc brrr
having come all this way we decided we should nrake the ellbrt to get to the slro*
So, to the show we went. There we met more hardy souls. The weather had obviorrslr
I suppose it had crossed rny mind but I didn't dare expect what Blaize's gift was to be,
a beautiful little Deerhound puppy, born on the day of our wedding. So it was that Liza
came into or,rr lives, for six months she filled us with the usual pleasure and rapture that
Thereafter. life with Liza seerned to be an endless ordeal of visits to Angela Bodey,
firstly in Ripon and then Leeds and the daily doling out of tablets. However, despite
her corrdition she enjoyed nearly five years of a full life with us. Whilst she joined the
"bed potato squad" irr the back of the house, in the last year or two she was always
pleased to see you, very affectionate and. given Frank's weekday absences in London,
my constant bedfellow. She was, above all else, a very gentle, beautiful, elegant and
r.rnconrplaining lady.
Maybe it was due to the heat of the sumnter but from the beginning of August she
seenred to deteriorate. Visits to Angela confirmed that her heart was worsening and
changes to her tnedication only seemed to make matters worse. In the early of hours of
a Sunday morning, returning from Frank's brother's fiftieth, we found heron ourbed
with her hearl racing - you could feel it like a stearn train pounding through her ribs. I
administered rnorc bcta blockers which seemed to relieve the problem but I admitted to
Frank on Mondirv rrronrirrs. rvhilc taking hirn to the station, that I had a bad feeling
about her. l.jrrsl hoperl tlrrrt Angcla could wolk the rniracle when I took Liza back to
OUR FIRST COURSING MEETING
A wet and windy molning in January, this year,
was the day we had chosen to try coursing,
with our rain hating Deerhound, Beardswood
Lara or Tiggy as she is known at home.
Tiggy' s breeders, Dr. Sarah Helps and Mrs
Heather Helps, had suggested we bring her
along with the added incentive, that her brother
and sister, Beardswood Lua and Lorna would
be thele as well.
On our arrival, it took all our persuasive
powers to coax our reluctant Deerhound out of
the warmth of the car and join growing numbers
of Deerhounds straining at the leash and
becoming more excitable by the rninute... Tig
was not impressed!! Once all had gathered and
the judge had mounted herhorse, (l hadn't really expected that!) we set ofTacross tlrc
field of what looked like cabbages. It was truly a spectacular sight, (hounds rror
cabbages ! )
As the wind knocked us sideways and the clay collected on our boots. nry progrcss
was further slowed by T'iggy dragging behind nre. giving a look of total clisbelicl'arrd
disdain-the look that only a Deerhound can nruster. I looked at my husband. who rvas
being pulled ever onward by an enthusiastic Lua, obviously in anticipation ol'r,r,hat
was to come; my husband looked at nry plight with our relLrctant hound and raisccl his
eyebrows back at me: This could be a very long day... ... ...
We soldiered on, wondering how on earth we would frnd a hare with all the dogs arrcl
people around, when suddenly the shout "hare right" went up and a hale shot across
the field from just in fi'ont of us, soon followed by two hounds-we watched specclrlcss
as they tore uphill and out of sight. We glanced at each other, the look on our faces
said it all, this was fantastic! Our once reluctant hound was now leaping and realirrr.l
to get free of her lead; well, she always was a quick learner! The next pair rvere in tlrc
slips and I was away now being dragged up the hill. A f-ew rnole pairs ran and the re
was a shoft delay, whilst a kamikaze hare ran fi'orn behind and throLlgh the line, orrc
of the hounds escaped and chased it in cilcles. Once caught it was'l-ig's tuln.
Suddenly. very nervous we put her in slips, Tiggy ran in a white collar, the other in
red-we hoped that we would l'ind a hare very quickly. After what seenred an age. rvitlr
no sign of a hale, we nrovcd into the next fleld. My husband and l, scanning rrraclly
Miss M.F. Loughrey (Rosstyn) *.'8rH?nx*;r?"101o,u*n rhe folowinp:-
It is with very great reluctance
that I record, for the many who
liked Ch Tragic of Ross, the
facts of his death. Exhibitors
that know already that he died
during the days ofour absence
at the L.K.A., and now that we
are at home again it is quite
incredibly diffi culto believe
that we will not see him
anymore, and that he is not just
around the back ofhis kennel
run, or inside sleeping
perhaps-at all events only out
of site for the moment. to come
trotting presently to his gait,
jaunty, high headed, with that elegant action that is so impossible to forget. we lavc
always been well aware that parting with Tragic would come hard when trrat
inevitable day arrived, for we have travelled a good piece of the road together, and
many an endearing landmark stand,q to his credit along the journey. perhaps his
distemper days forged the.firstbond that gave his a di:fferent stanOing-to his fellows.
He was so gallant then in his effort to live and fought so gamely throlugh the whole
gamut of complications. Double pneumonia foilowed dyientery; for lb nights we
never left him, and as a grand finale the curtain rang down with amaurois ind a rong
period of total blindness followed.
Dogs in general are remarkable for their trust and faith in their owners, but fi.onr that
time onwards Tragic's believe in our omnipotence assumed all the finesse and
distinction of a fine art.
This confidence of his is the most painful to consider now in the light of subsequent
events, for his who trusted so implicitly in his own people was, to ill intents and
purposes, deserted by them in his hour of need. He died, not of poisoning as we
surmised, but of acute distension, with alt its attendant agony. The trouble declared
itself during the night, and arthough rragic was broughtio the house, given brandy
and every care no one knew to administer the injection of apomorphia"that would havc
saved his life. we are told that he turned earnestly from one sympathiser to another
quite plainly asking for help, but those who couli have helpei him were not there.
Death has come here once befbre in this same guise claiming ch osric rong ago, sincc
then, in all the piled up weeks and months that go to the making of r7 years, .,basciris
communis colli" has never reappeared. Fate chose the nroment-after rni departure, arr
unguarded instant, to play his sorry trick and selecting Tragic for the victim, added arr
ingenious picce of'cruclly 1'he Vetinerary surgeon *ho ru* the hound in the morning
prrrr.rrrrced lrirr bcyorrcl aid. So passes ch rragic of Ross a name which will live
lbrcvcl w,ltcrcvcr I )ccrhouncls so.
36
As a youngster he received
an injury to his knee, which
became more apparent with
maturity. He was not
exhibited much attending in
all some dozen shows, at
which he gained 6
Clral lerrge Certifi cates and
four reserves for that
honour. But it is as a sire
that Charnpion Tragic is
memorable. Paucity of
material has reached an
acute stage when Tragic
made his appearance in the
Deerhound world, and he
was freely used, with what
success one has only to
look at the kennel club records to see.
Each dnd all ofus have reason to be grateful to him forthe pleasure he has givcn in his
beautiful progeny and when each and all of us are long forgotten, the brcccl will still
carry the hallmark of this dominant sire.
This article was given lo us by Jean Bland/brd who thought it would he intere, sting lo
the members. It is worth noting thal an "injection of apomorphia" is no longer the
current lrealment for lorsion. Ed.
HOUN DSHOW 2003 Critique
The Hound Show held at the Stafford County Fairgrounds is one of tlre rnorc
attractive venues at which I have judged. lt can easily be placed on a par with the
"old" Santa Barbara, California site or our Montgomery (Pennsylvania) show (the
terrier show outside of Philadelphia), as well as many of the other top Anrerican shou
sites.
The hospitality of the club members is equal to any in the States and is to be
commended. I felt very much at home, but then they are hound people.
Although the weather was absolutely superb with hardly a cloud in the sky
(gratefully, the heat wave had not yet struck), it was with a bit of sadness that I
entered the ring not to have Miss Noble at ringside. We were very fond of her in the
States, and were fortunate to have had her share her enjoyment oflife and Deerhounds
with us. Atourbreed show, herabsence is very noticeable; it was even on this lovely
day.
The entry was fairly large and a compliment not only to the younger members
of the Deerhound Club but the health of the breed. As in America, there is always a lot
of clucking about actual quality and 'type', whether or not the current crop of breeders
are on the right track or have lost sight of the breed. Faults come and go often with
newer exhibitors and breeders not being totally aware of the ebb and flow of these
faults within the breed and not being alert to these problems. For example, I remember
years ago Miss Noble cornmenting that ring tails come and go in cycles. This was at a
time in the Seventies when the breed in Britain appeared to be relatively free of ring
tails while at the same time were more prevalent in the States. Not much later in the
early Eighties, Deerhounds in Britain had decided to grow a significant number of ling
tails. At the Hound Show, I did not notice a very great number, in fact, there were
relatively few.
What did seem to be more prevalent, although by no means predominant, were
some fairly poor toplines. This is disappointing, in that outline and topline have
always been better than in the States. There seems to be the tendency towards rather
flat backs with lack of underline. This creates a tubular effect that is not only
unattractive but poor type. It denotes lack ofchest and short upper anns. This is a fault
that is all too prevalent in the States. Perhaps it isjust a cycle.
The bulk of the entry had fairly good nrovement with some examples having
very lovely reach or extension. Those exarrples that brushed or moved weakly in the
hindquarters were not so much structurally unsound, although there were some of
those, as just in poor condition. Actually, I was really pleased to go over quite a lot ol'
sturdy, wellconditioned hounds. In fact, the overall range in movement was pretty
good. Now, I know that there are those who feel that keen spirit overcornes a poorly
constructed hound (l have often heard it said that a keen spirit overcomes
'bad feet'.)
but, frankly, it really helps to be able to keep up with a stag. Accordingly, there
is no excuse for a deerhound not covering the most amount of ground with the least
expenditure of energy. So, despite a keen aftitude, economy of movement and good
movement is necessary to "type" - the age-old argument! The bulk of the exhibits hatl
good thick tltighs and were well let down in the hock. Sadly, we ale lacking both thost'
attributes in tlre States. l'here scenred to be very many good, thickly coated tails
44
(not too many gay tails), many of the exhibits had good density of bone. I was particularly
pleised to see nlany good ears, small and folded nicely. I would have liked
to see a bit more back-skull on some exhibits. While this is not critical, it is important
to remember that the deerhound head is not a Wolfhound head. I did see many
good examples of head type with very many examples that had proper level planes
[which allows the most punishing bite). Eyes were by in large fairly dark, although
there were several examples that had some rather light eyes.
what was par.ticularly appealing was the fact that there were many more
dark, harsh coats with the proper length of coat. I am somewhat prejudiced towards
a darker coat as lny most favourite Deerhound was Justina of Ardkinglas. She only
got two CC's but should have been made up. She had a classic head and was a ferocious
courser.
On balance. I was very please with the range of exhibits. There were some
really excellent examples with proper Deerhound type. All in all, the breed is fine
shape and the exhibitors ought to be conrmended. Now as to actual placements:
Puppy Dog 'i+St,
L) filtoeter Grilse: This youngster has very nice bone, good feet'
depth of chest for his age. He moved quite nicely. when he settled down.
but needs a bit more bone.
3.) 1390, Lealla Jarlath.
weight.
2.\ 1417. Kilbourne Comanche of Lordswell: This dog moved
easily and freely but needs tnore bone and topline.
Special Beginners Dog
l .) 145 I , Killoeter Grilse. As above'
2.) l434,Gentom Loyalty at Brockfield: I liked this dog as he had a good
3.) 1323. Clantonrnoor Ardanach to Sutherland.
2.) 1449, Gentom Lorcan of Talgavar: Another dog with propcr outline. He
type. This dog is very sound for his age, lras lovely ears, nice backskull, and a nice
coat. He's got a good expression that is very reminiscent of sorre of the older lroLrncls
fiom years ago. A good, craggy dog. I chose him for the club special, Best Head, as
he has a classic head and expression. I was rerninded of Ardkinglas Chieftain and A
Kohinoor (who needed furnishings). Best Veteran in Breed.
2.) 1420, Ardkinglas Yatzi: What a good old girl. Here is an exantple of a
style that is being lost. She has lovely ears and ear-set and moves quite easily for lre r
age. I was pleased to see her after so long a tirne.
3.) 1407, Ravensbridge Oscar's Boy.
While the dogs were a bit more uneven in quality and did not have the depth in lhe
ranks, there are some very rrice exanrples of type being shown. The better dogs irr
these classes fi'ankly are the equal of the bitches, regrettably there are not lnore.
Puppy Bitch
I . ) l.l4(r, Tartraven Vula Mor: This is an easy moving youngster with a good
3.) 1381. Pyefleet Polkadot.
Junior Bitch
l.) 1343, Cusidh Cool Ratharsaidh: Here is anotherexample of an harsh, dark
with good extension. She needs a bit more topline.
3.) 1396, Saintvalery Anticipation.
Special Yearling Bitch
l.) 1373, Glenfoyble Fernitickles: Here is an example of a very solid, sound
bitch with good bone and a lovely topline.
2.) 1415, Kilbourne Sioux: Like tlre first place. this bitch rnovecl cluite niccly has
a proper spring of rib and is in very good condition.
3.) 1344. Cusidh Dain du Ehrhir.
Special Beginners Bitch
| .) 1388, Arrmialchu Beinn Bheula: This was one of rny choiceS lbr head and
expression. She has a strong neck, well set, lovely sweep of stifle, thickly coated tail.
and she nroved well from the side.
2.) 1397, Saintvalery Hope: Another example with a good, harsh coat. This
bitch lras correct leach and is very fit!
3.) 1356, Breesfalt Fernie.
Post Graduate Bitch This bitch class has great depth. lt was simultaneously a very
hard and easy class tojudge.
| .) 1341, Killoeter Caileag: This bitch is absolutely lovely. She has a very good
sweep of stifle and is well let down in lrock, good tail and tail set. With a proper set on
neck, very strong, her expression is very correct. CC/BOB/Best Bred By.Best Under 3.
2.) 1382, Pyefleet Oriel; An equally stylish bitch with very lovely ears. An easy
mover in fine corrdition. A strong, strong second.
3.) 1400, Beardswood Lorna.
Limit Bitch
l.) 1334, Flaunden Flora McDonald: Another holdover for head type with
lovely expression and ears, this bitclt some might think a proper older style. Frankly,
she is very proper in all lespects with a lovely underline and balance of bone and body
and like the fir'st several placentents in the previous class the con'ect type in any age,
fullstop!
2.) 1439. Tal'traven a Chuillin: Again, het'e is an example of cot'rect underline,
depth of chest and lovely expression. 3.) 1441, Kilbourne Tystie of Ghiltan.
47
Open Bitch
l.) 1445, Ashtonbrook Bramble: This bitch has correct balance of size to bone.
She has good ears, feet and is a lovely mover. Reserve CC.
2.) 1335, Ch. Flaunden Betty Burke: This bitch looked suspiciously like one
from the previous class. She has very nice balance, depth of chest, a thickly coated tail
properly set and lovely ears. Small wonder she and her sister won Best Brace.
3.) 1384, Ch. Pyefleet Morven.
Special Coursing Bitch
l.) 1388, Please see Special Beginners.
2.) 1384, Ch.Pyefleet Morven: As above, she placed high in the ribbons as she
has good extension, depth ofchest and lovely ears. An overall correct type.
3.) 1382: Pyefleet Oriel.
The last several bitch classes were extremely good in depth of quality with
some really outstanding examples. It made choosing the certificate for bitches quite a
chore; my Post Graduate Bitch, Killoeter Caileag, earned and deserved the CC. She
was Best of Breed and the dog, Beardswood Lua was awarded the Dog CC. He too is a
fine example of a Deerhound and not to be taken lightly.
*r'ryr"
FORTUNA: SPAIN
After a shambolic move from Wales to Spain we are
now more or less settled here, "We" being my wife
Delia and l, an eighteen rnonth Deerhound Dougal
Alexander (Anmialchu Beinn Bynac x Regalflight
Gauze), two twelve year old Siamese Cats. Brothers
Solomon and Sebastian and one ancient seventeen
year old Lurcher, Lily, once a champion, but now,
like her owners, overweight, grey and arthritic!
Our first problenr was getting a crate to fit
Dougal that would be airline approved. Making it
was no problem, but the snag was their rules say that
the animal must have a specific amount of space over
it's head height. Dougal is about thirty five inches to
the shoulder and obviously a lot taller to the top of
his head, so the crate ended up nearly four feet high,
which we were told initially would not go through the planes cargo door. Eventually
through an organisation called Trans-fur we found that Britannia could fit it into one of
their planes and better still, they flew from Cardiff. Delia booked us all on the same
plane, which was wonderful until it occurred to me that we hadn't sold the house yet!!
Fortunately allwent well with the sale and thanks to the kindness of Cail& Kinr Lewis
(fellow Deerhound owners) from Pontypridd, who boarded us and the two dogs (and
even offered to keep Lily if we thought the move would be too much for her), we all
departed safely from Cardiff to Alicante with us upstairs and the tribe down.
The Rep was waiting for us at the airport to lead us to the house we had rented whilst
completed the purchase of our new home, and Trans-fur's contact was waiting with a
van to collect the animals, all seemed perfect. However, the plot then became
completely unravelled. We trekked the considerable distance across to the car rental
area in a ternperature of about 103 degrees only to find our car boxed in by two others
from the same company and no representative to be found anywhere. Fortunately,
someone who was going back to the hire desk told the Rep for us and came back with a
promise of them being moved in 5 minutes. Half an hour later nothing had happened so
a phone call was made to the desk, this brought profuse apologises and a prornise to
come straight over. Another half an hour and still nothing. By now tenrpers were becoming
a little frayed so Delia took off on the trek back to the desk, look out Rep!l Her
Spanish is pretty good normally but when annoyed, fluent. I obviously did not hear or
see the ensuing clash, but it seems that when the Rep saw her coming he made the mistake
of pretending that he didn't understand English. What Delia said to hinr I don't
know but it was obviously very effective because the cars were moved ("MUY
RAPIDO").
However, we were late and very tired when we all arrived at the rented house. Afiel ir
careful check around the fencingthe animals were released and all seemed well a_eairr
All was indeed well until the day we were due to move to our new house. This was the
time Sebastian clcciclcd to squeeze under the fence and disappear! We were frantic and
searched fbl nriles but eventually we had to set off for our new home with heavv
hearls. We leli telcphone numbers and notices but we both had a bad feeling ablut
him.
The next problenr to arise was the furniture, scheduled to arrive on 8th June, turned up
on 3rd July, one day before our friends arrived to stay with us! Even worse, after we
had nrade a poirrt of telling them we lived up a narrow country track, they arrived with
a 28 ton articulated lorry. Eventually, the furniture was just dumped on a patch of
rough ground about half a mile away and we had to trundle up and down collectine it
bit by bit in ternperatures hovering around l04 degrees. We were exhausted when at 4
o'clock we received a call from The San Anton Animal Hospital to say that a Siamese
cat had been brought in and " could we come and see if it was ours?" We were
desperate to go but could not leave our belongings on the waste ground. Spurred on by
this, we redoubled our efforts and things were just dumped anywhere to get them in.
Despite this, it was still l0 o'clock before we could rush of to the hospital, and
midnight before we arrived. We were quite expecting to be disappointed but, wonder
of wonders, it was Sebastian!! He was skeleton thin, hanging with ticks and his face
was terribly swollen with some horrible infection. Pus was coming from his mouth.
nose and ears and it quickly became apparent that he was totally blind. Poor creature.
God only knows what he must have suffered in the four weeks he was missing. He was
found near a church in Guardamar, about five miles from our rented house, uia to.trnarely
for us. an old Spanish lady had taken pity on him and taken him into the animal
hospital.
The vet helped us to clean him up and gave him a massive anti-biotic injection, but she
warned us to be prepared for him to die in the next twenty four hours. We were
prepared forthis, but our hooligan of a Deerhound had different ideas, and we are
convinced that he saved his life. The moment we arrived home he took charge of him
and nursed hirn like an indulgent Mum. Lily ( who had raised both cats since their
rnother died when they were five weeks old) refused to
touch him, which made us even more certain that he
was going to die. Dougal however took him off onto
his own private mattress, licked him clean at regular
intervals, slept with him between his paws and refused
to leave hirn for days, We were frightened that he
would catch the infection, but he insisted on cleaning
Sebastian and keeping his face and nose clear.
We were really amazed that such a teen-age thug, as
he is at the moment, could be so loving and gentle to
an anirnal in such distress. Whatever he did worked
because Sebastian sloyly recovered, day by day, and
is now able to walk again, has put weight on and
regained a srnall amount of sight, though I don't think
he will ever see properly again. It's interesting to note
that although Dougal gives Solomon no regard, and
has been known to step on him, he is always very
careful not to walk across in front of
Sebastian and always picks his feet up
very carefully and very high to step over
him.
All seems peace and quiet again now,
with us and the tribe doing well. (except
for another visit to fhe satne anirnal hospital
for Dougal to have a grass spear
removed from between his toes) He had
to be tranquillised to do it as he fought
like a tiger, with the two young vets, that
tried to treat him. I think he had two
attending vets because of his size. No
particular comment was made but when the vet was called in to the surgery he said
i.Jesu
Christo" under his breath, then vanished and catne back with reinforcerrtents!
Walking the dogs here is quite difficult, as it is not possible to go out rnuch after eight
in the mlrning,io it has to be early walkies. Trust us to arrive in Spain dLrling the hottest
summer on record with terrtperatures of 95 to | 00 degrees. Tlrele are plenty of
good walks aroutrd as tlre coutrtryside is pretty open and wild where we are. Miles of
i-"ron g.ou", but unfoftunately they are full of rabbits, pheasants and hares, so if the
dogs were let loose in thern I don't suppose we would see thenr again fbr a foltnight'
We aia let them off early one nrorning and Dougal prornptly vanished. ljow cau you
lose somethingthe size of a Deerhound in open country? We found hitlt eventually,
returning frorn a visit to a nearby Finca. Fortunately, being early, only the Abuela
(Grandniother) was about and she flapped a towel at hir.rr and off he went. I dread to
think of th. mayhem that would have ensued had he gone into the house, as nearly all
the Spanish are terrified of big dogs, and will not go anywhere neal thern. Poor
Dougal, he does so love everyone, but only a t'ew will touch him ol'even talk to him
Lily has no such problems, as she is very similar to their Podenco hurrting dogs so no
one minds her. I believe this stems from the time when Spain was a trruch poorer country
and if you spent money to feed a big dog it had to be for a reasorl. TIre reason usuuily
*ut tirat it was a savage guard dog and fionr childhood they learned to steer clear
of big dogs.
Leishmaniasis is a worry of course, but hopefully, living about forty ntiles inland fionr
the costal belt we may avoid it. We maintairr a very rigid anti-mosquito and fly regirre
so do feel we have a good chance of escaping it. We are looking forward to the Autumn
and winter (not sornething we would say in Britain), as it doesn't seern as if it
gets very cold here, although they did have snow on the mountains around us last year
We can't wait to get out into that open countryside and turn thenl loose.
We will write again of tlreir progress (and ouls) after Chlistmas, and although a littlc
early, may we take this opportunity to offer our best wishes for the f-estive tinre to all
deerhound owners.
PS We loved the Summer Newsletter and look forward to the next olle.
Sir John and Lady Cuise kindly invited us to kick off our season with a farnr
walk around their estate. E,xcitenrent and expectations were high as people were cirger
to 'get back out there' after the long sumnler break. The main concern was thc
severe lack of rain, which did prevent us coursing on some of the land.
A number of rnembers had stayed at Elmore Court the night before, including
Katrin Hubert, who had brought her two hounds all the way from Switzerland!! A
first for coursing! She had come over with Toon Van Drunen who nrany of us know
as the gentlernan who sells the lovely leatherwork at the Breed shows. | 'fixed'the
card so that novice hounds ran with a more experienced one. We also ran thern on tlrc
white collar so that they were next to the slipper.
After coffee and introductions we set off to our first set of fields. Our slipper for the
day was Wayne Drew and Andrew Chastney was our judge. These were mainly
maize fields that had just been cut. We found a few hares but managed to only get
one pair off. We then walked over several grass fields but it was not safe to release
the hounds, as there were large cracks in the parched ground. This problern continued
for the rest of the morning. We found another maize field that had hares on it but
again there were large clacks in the soil so we decided that we would break for lunch
and try the water meadows in the afternoon in the hope that there would be better'
running ground.
Lunch was a very civilised and leisurely affair on the front lawn of Elmore Court.
The weather was sunny and mild and everyone relaxed in the sunshine. After lunclr
we set off in the cars for the water rneadows. Here, we had much rnore luck and
found a number of hares. Lady Guise's youngster Saintvalery Anticipation coursecl
very well and carried on across a rolled field that was pretty rough under foot. I tlrirrk
wiser hounds nray have pulled up! This was Wayne's slip of the day!
64
A hare had been spotted in the neighbouring field and we watched it come our way and
nip across a land bridge into the next field. Wayne was watching it the whole time and
took the hounds down into the ditch as the lrare came towards hirn. He pulled the dogs
up out of the ditch, made sure they were sighted and then slipped them afterthe hare! |
tliink most onlookers were impressed by this manoeuvre! There was a very good, close
course between Katrin's Amy Bew and Smith's Estrella, they coursed the hare along
but rnost of the novice hounds managed to have a run.
It was then back to Eltnore Court for tea. Well, what a spread! Superb hospitality and a
welcorne cup of tea (or two) after all our walking. lt was great to see everybody having
a chat afterwards as we nortnally all disappear off horne straight after a meeting.
We had a great day, even if the
ground was really too hard to run
in most places, it gave us a chance
to give our dogs a good walk and
get the youngsters used to being
in the slips.
Lodge Park
Lure Coursing Meeting 05/10/03
The National Trust contacted the Deerhound Club, a while ago, and asked them if it
was possible to put a lure coursing event on at Lodge Park. Great idea!! Everybody lurtl
a fantastic day and I'm sure that everyone who attended would agree that it was a gfcll
success. This was mainly due to Gill and Toby Srnith's hard work organising
everything and Patrick from the National Trust who did much of the organisation at thc
Park. So what is Lodge Park? Some of you might be wondering so here's a potted
history lesson! Lodge Park is in Gloucestershire part of the Sherborne Estate, just otf
the A40, near Burford. lt was designed and built to be a deer coursirrg Lodge. ln the
| 630's John 'Crump' Dutton a wealthy squire, with a passion for gambling, created thc
Lodge. The house itself was designed as a viewing platform so that coursing could be
observed from the roof or from the balcony at the front of the building. The style of
Lodge was modelled on Inigo Jones's new banqueting house in London that Dutton
had seen. The Lodge was not built to be lived in but was specifically designed for
entertaining his guests with good sport and fine fbod. There is a mile long walled
enclosure down which the deer would run, with a park and wood at the top, frorrr
which the deer were driven. The original hounds that ran were of a greyhound type and
were called talbots, but the hounds would have had more stamina than a rrrodern greyhound,
as they would have chased the deer over a mile long course.
It would not have been run on a stake system, like modern coursing meetings, but
individual wagers between men and their pair of hounds. The gamekeeper slipped the
hounds. There were two types of course, a'breathing'course which would cost half a
crown a dog, with twelve pence going to the slipper. The winner would be the first
over the pinching post that was just beyond the first ditch. The second ditch, which
was much larger, then separated the hounds fi'om the deer. tf any rnatch were lrrade of
twenty pounds a dog (large amount of money!) then they would have a 'fleshing'
course where dogs would be slipped on a shorter law to enable the hounds to strike a
deer, ideally in front of the grandstand. The winning hound of this type of course
would be the first dog to take hold of the deer. The park was fully operational in 1634.
It was used as a deer coursing Lodge for
less than a century as it was superseded by
racing and fox hunting.
OK, back to the day! The National Trust
asked if we could come in period costume.
We managed to borrow some outfits frorn a
Sealed Knot couple so we were authentically
dressed! | looked like a proper puritan
maid! lt was lovely to see that so many
members made the effort to dress up for the
occasion and didn't we look a rnasnificent sight? lt was super to see everyone parading
66
lunch and then took a break.
park. The local paper interviewed Katrin Hubert, from Switzerland, as this is the first
time Deerhounds have been brought over for anything like this. They have only been
entered into shows previously. Katrin had a fantastic day as Amy Bew got through to
the semi-finals. Both her dogs had been tired from their exploits, hare coursing, the
day before. So I would imagine that the pair of them slept exceedingly well on their
long journey back to Switzerland. What stories they would have to tell their kennel
mates when they reached home!
There was another chance to parade after lunch and then it was straight back into the
coursing. Slipping was made a bit easier in the afternoon as the more enthusiastic
hounds were left in the stake. There were some extremely keen ones still in with a
chance. Wayne had his work cut out as the hounds were so eager that when you put
them in slips they were straining, raring to go and became two hundred pounds of
sheer power! As the rounds progressed, the coursing improved immensely as we were
down to very keen, fast dogs and it made it much more entertaining for the spectators.
The front runners were Hubert's Amy Bew who had lure coursed before and ran very
keenly, Coe's Dreamseller (Peggotty), a bitch that ran out a clear winner each time in
the early rounds. She made it through to the final. Churchill's lsauld (Dove), that flew
Iike the wind and ran out the eventual winner beating Peggotty, by a couple of
lengths. There was aprize giving at the end of the day and Mary Churchill was
presented with an engraved glass plate by Joan Wragg (Lady Huntworth!) and the
runner up Malcolm Coe also received one. Throughout the day hundreds of pictures
were taken so the events would be recorded for life as it was certainly a very
memorable day. Apparently, there were approximately 800 people through the gate,
so it was also a very successful day for the National Trust and maybe there will be a
repeat performance next year!
large turn out by Members was indicative of the value that we place ou
this type of slrow, enabling those wlro don't normally get to shows an
opportunity to exhibit their dog and talk to fellow Club Mernbers. There was a
relaxed atnrosplrere throughout the show ground, even tlre coming and going
of aircraft from the nearby airfield failed to disturb the hounds.
Delighted to see Sue Piggott in tlre ring with Hyndsight lcon following her
recent spell in hospital; talking of "hospitals" it was also good to see our
editor, Glenis Peach, at tlre ringside, albeit in a wheel chair following surgery
to lrer foot, slre is recovering now but not patiently! We did however miss
Caroline Dowsett at the slrow, Caroliue lras had a spell of ill health & we send
her our good wishes for a speedy recovery.
A total of 108 Deerhounds had been entered in tlre l8 classes, dogclasses
(l-8) were judged by Mrs Lesley Sperrce, bitch classes (9-16) by Mrs Joyce
llrrnd and the "special" classes (11 &. I 8) by Mr Jeff Horswell who was also
thc referee.
llrc BIS winner by agreement between Lesley & Joyce was Heather & Sarah
llclps' Beardswood Lorna, Jeff was called to decide RBIS between Sue's
.lcarrnie as RBIS, we would not have been that disappointed however, if he
Irirtl chosen lcon, as he was the dog which we had choserr to mate to Jeannie
rrrrtl wlro has produced a lovely litter of puppies. We wor"lld therefore have
I was very pleased to be asked to judge bitches at the Deerhound Club Limited Show
on the 27th September 2003.
'fhere
were some lovely bitches to go over and I was pleased with my winners and
placings. However I did notice some poor hind quarters, lacking in bone, too high on
the hock and moving very close. Not what is expected of a breed that was bred to run
uphill, over rough terrain. There was also a lack of coat. A few exhibits had been
over stripped and some coats were actually broken. The breed standard does ask for
three to four inches ofcoat. I hope that fashion in the show ring does not prevail over
the desired coat lensth.
Another most beautiful of bitches. This is what Deerhounds are all about, combining
elegance with strength. To be commanding with gentleness. My two winners in this
often seen it on a thoroughbred stallion. Jeannie had the most luxuriant coat in excellent
condition. A classic head and for me the best of the day. She had a curvy outline
with a good deep body. Correct lay of shoulder nice sweep from hip to hock. She
CHRIS ARTHUR CONTEMPLATES VARIOUS III'MIiI)IIiS FOR
LONELINESS........... and recalls a small book, Siamcsc cats, the shoe box,
Celtic joie de vie, die valkerie arrd scrcndipity.
The Observer's Series of books was first published by Wirrrrc's around 1948,
and by the 60's had expanded to a range of 50 linle volurnes all copiously illustrated
with photographs and line drawings, and dealing with sLrb.iects as diverse as birds,
horses, wildflowers, pond life, furniture, aircraft and churches. Oul canirre copy was
plinted in 1964, maybe they are still in publication?
So to begin, in the general direction of, our beginning....
When Lynn and I met there was an intelligent, streetwise Toby the rnongrel,
who used to take himself for walks in central London, crossing the main road to the
park on his own (using the pedestrian crossing), he'd wait patiently until the traffic had
stopped or the road was clear. Originally a "rescue job" and so named
'cos he looked
like Mr Punch's dog; he lived with us on a sort of temporary permanent loan but
wisely returned to his previous (post rescue) owner.
After his departure I was told that the Siamese cats were lonely without a dog in
the house. In consequence, Sasha, the enchantingly beautiful, extraordinarily energetic,
mad as a hatter, guilt ridden lrish Setter, leapt into our lives from an ad in the evening
paper; because he needed a good horne. We were your average pet owners and boy
were we a good home! Possibly because he was SO enthusiastic seerned very large
after his predecessor. His predilection for running in ever decrqasing circles caused LJS
considerable stress. On these occasions his controllable deafness would switch in with
great precision and render him oblivious to the increasingly desperate screams of his
fast receding owners.
It was put to me that this was probably because he was lonely and NEEDED a
friend, another dog for company and then he would be MTJCH quieter. I diplomatically
expressed the opinion that it shouldn't be another big dog and in doing so mornentarily
showed a fatal weakness. Almost immediately Lily the Standard Smooth Haired
Dachshund arrived.
She also was lonely, she was the puppy sitting in the water bowl ion the corner
of the cage whilst the rest of the litter played happily at, what with hindsight rnust have
been a puppy farm, she NEEDED a good horne.
This dirninutive scrap rapidly put both the cats and the setter firrrrly in their
place. She was the boss. Unsurprisingly the Setter changed not one wit and continued
blithely to attempt to run into earth orbit. Lily hated men except me. lf we were being
polite we would say she wasn't very partisan ( in other words she was.just plain aggressive)
to ANYONE and ANYTHINC that was not family. Having said that, Lily
did have a lively sense of humour. She had a passion fbr diving dolphin-like into fox or
swan droppings, when her neck was sufficiently gilded she woLrld leap into the arnts of
her nearest hurnan for an affectionate cuddle.
94
lkrth Setter and Dachshund lived to a good age. A few weeks after Sasha's
, \('ntuirl dernise, Lynn said to me that whilst Lily was very "sporting" (see partisan),
I rlr rrirs gctting on a bit and she would feel safer with a large dog around the house.
llr this tirrrc I had learnt. lt had taken a few years but I had LEARNT! Another dog
\\ \S qoins to arrive, and I was being given the opportunity to have SOME say in the
rrr,rllet
Accoldingly ltook The Observers Book of Dogs from the shelf and cruised
..rrt'lullr through the bleeds. Mmmm.... I wouldn't be seen dead with one of those,
rh,r\(' \itl) all the time, they're too small, they need a lot of grooming, they show their
f r,ffrrlf r\. thcy're too big, I came to the Deerhound,27" to 30" tall ... biggish but does-
,r | ,roun(l too big, quiet, noble etc could be OK. I replaced the book and forgot all. A
, ,r1ry11. ol'rvccks later Lynn took the book and went through it. SHE also stopped at the
| \'r'rlrorrrrd page. I realised that this had to be "MEANT"; in any healthy long term
.r l,rnrln\lrip llre nurnber of times both parties INDEPENDENTLY arrive at the same
,.'lr lrrriorl rvithoLrt prior communication can be rare. This makes them rather special
rlrl the r slrould be ignored at one's peril. At the time I was aware that a relative of
I rnn'\ livirrg irr Carlisle once owned Deerhounds and that Lynn had met the breed in
lr r r hrhllrootl. arrd it subsequently emerged that in her teens Lynn had worked for a
t.rx' rr\ ir I'crrncl rnaid for a Mr Joe Braddon, (but that was awhile ago); so she had
rrrx. lr,rt kuround in dogs.
t )rr tlrc othcr hand I was nothing but your bog standard archetypal pet owner.
\urr'l\ rrlrt'rr \tlrr wanted a pet you looked in the pets column of the local paper, or
.rr rrt tl ,t l)('t \hol). ll'it was a bit special and a real pedigree then you looked in the
-...,r11 .rrl.. ol lltc Sunclay Times. Not surprisingly I drew a blank. Look elsewhere, eve-
l Lynn
rernembered that there used to be a special papcl cirllccl "Our Dogs", I
said with ridiculous Victorian sounding title like that it had probably vanished long
ago. Certainly I had neverseen itatthe newsagents. Did thcsc clogs still exist?
Persistence paid off and eventually afterseveral trips to a cou;rlc ol'rcl-crerrce libraries,
I found a listing for The Deerhound Club secretary, Dr Phyllis l)oync'r Wall, and her
address.
I telephoned and said, " Hello I'nr tlrinking of buying a [)eerhound, wltere can I
get one?" She was charrn herself and after quietly questioning nre told nte tltere were
no puppies about at the moment and suggested I call in three Irtonths tirle. lJnknown to
us, we were beginning "the test" what a very sensible procedtrle. I callecl at the due
date, Dr Poyner Wall, regretted thatthere were stillno puppies arottnd. but strggested
that if we ever found ourselves to be travelling in the direction of Bradlbrd-olr-Avotr,
why not drop in for a cup of tea and meet her hourrds.
Yes please! Try and stop us!
On the appointed day we rang the bell at nurnber seven, Glen View, the door
opened and Clrampion Riabhach of lona of Melchior (Roobarb to his fi'iends) quietly
stepped out, and without jurnping placed his paws on rny shoulders and looked rne
straight in the eye. I was captivated! After meeting the hounds and takirrg tea, Dr
Poyner Wall said thatthere were still no puppies available. But if we were passirrgthat
way again, she would love to meet our Dachshund. This was arranged, to otrr surprise
Lily behaved decorously, we took tea, met the dogs again. There was no news of any
pups and we went on our way.
Three rnonths later we received a call from her, one of her bitches had just had a
litter, and there might, just might, be a puppy for us. lF we were still interested. She
made it very clear that we would not be able to choose (there was a great deal of sense
in this because we really wouldn't have known what to look for!).
Which is how twenty sornething years ago we came into Deerhounds. Phyllis
asked if we wanted to show. As comparative innocents, who had been brainwashed by
the media, we had the impression that everything in the show ring was highly show
trained, transporled in cages, coiffured, prirnped and lacquered, so we thanked her
kindly and said no thank you, we didn't really think it was our scene. We.itrst wanted a
normal dog, a pet. Thus we becatne owners of our first Deerhound puppy.
'l-he
Phyllis kept in close contact to suppoft and monitor our progress. ledoubtable
Lily eventually moved on to the great running ground in the sky and I was told
that (GUESS WHAT) our lovely young Deerhound was lonely witltout one ol-his own
kind. Miss Cox was prevailed upon to part with one of her show quality puppies. Sone
tirne later we received a call to say that there was a little local show at Chippcnharn
Corn Exchange and all the litter brothers and sisters would be there. woLrldrr't it be rrice
to see thern all together? Of course it wouldl Never having entered a "rcal" dog show
before, and second entries being so much cheaper than the first. we crrtcrccl three of
four classes with each. To our absolute anrazement we callre away rvilh a buttclt of
varied coloured rosettes and began to look upon ouryoungsters irr a rrcw light.
We entered a few more shows and under the careful tuition ol'thc lrvo breeders
thus began our long and continuous learning curve. Deerhounds lravc irrtrodrrccd us to
News from Scotland
Show news is a bit thin on the ground,
apart from August SKC, where newlycrowned
Jean Blandford's Ch. Flaunden
Flora MacDonald went BOB and took
fourth place in a very strong hound group.
The dog ticket went to Mick and Glenis
Peach's Pendrethan MacCallan and
reserves to their Kilbourne Etta and
Angela Randall's Ch Kilbourne Celtic at
Hammonds. Best puppy (to rny delight)
was my 'Gang of One' , Lyart Lyra
Belacqua. For once the show had excellent
weather. SKC can be rniserable when it's raining and blowing a gale, bul when the
sun shines, it's a pleasure to watch the groups from the banking rather than
huddling under the BIS ring tent.
The Scottish Pedigree whippet Racing club held their annual open day fbr orher
breeds on the 14"'of September'. This event is completely unmissable as far as I'rn
concerned. Again, the weather held and we had a reasonable tLrrnout of six
Deerhounds running in two heats of three. Heat winners were Marjory McKinnon's
Moireach Flyer at Fingon (Midgie) and Nell caine's Killoeter caileag. My girls were
both second in their heats and Stranwith Handsel and Tartraven Stoura Stac were
third in theirs. (Handsel was far more interested in checking out the girls than in
chasing plastic and Stoura didn't quite see the point.) Midgie revealed a hitherto
unsuspected talent for constructive interference and bowled Ruin over with a wellplaced
shoulder charge, then tripped up andjoined her on the deck. However. both of
them leapt up and ran on after the lure with Midgie getting there first. Lyra being a
pnppy had never been racing before but got the idea straight away thanks to caileag
lrurtling off in fi'ont of her and thoroughly enjoyed herself. Nell had to lcave early in
order to see to dogs at home, so Lyra and Ruin were drafted in for the final r-un
against Midgie. Midgie went off like a rocket, but cut across the bend in the track in
her determination to get to the lure and was technically disqualified, not lhat she cared
a button. My two went off neck and neck in quite an exciting run, but Lyra _qot her
nose in front at the end for an official win, although everybody got prizes. l-he food
at the SPWRC is always wonderful and this year was no exception - our gratefll
thanks to the Whippet people for their kind hospitality.
Two of our older Deerhounds have recently died. Marjory McKinnon save a home to
Ardkinglas Yatzi after Miss Noble's death and Yatzi settled in inrrnediately with the
Fingons and began her long-planned carnpaign of world dorrrination. The ord Bat
seemed indestructible, but died in the middle of September followine sLrrgely fbr
torsion. She would have been ten in october and was dearly loved. Miss Nobre
didn't show her often, but she began a whole new career with Mar-ioly and was
98
rronrl in vcteran at the Houndshow under Jay Phinizy in August tlris year. I had the
This brought back fond memories of when I first started showing in the early 80's and
the SKC picnic. lt is a pity they fellaway. could we not revive thenr? lt is always good
for us all to get together, I don't think we do it often enough, I know that I have made
some good friends over the years but with the hustle and bustle of life we ruslr to
shows and then rush away whereas a picnic or gathering would be tlre excuse needed
to stay for a while and say hello.
My grandson and future vet started at Liverpool tJniversity two weeks age. He had had
Karen and myself running round like headless chickens, buying this arrcl that. Clothes.
I rrrrrrl say the Wolfhound people are really nice and welcoming. We have found this
Sad news from Peter Coull, his beloved
Deerhound Darkglade Aaragon has
died.25.09.03, Peter is devastated. Aarogan
was Peter's first Deerhound and known to us
all as 'Jake'. Jake brought Peter so much
happiness. He was bought frorn Stacey
Booth who bred him. (Regal Flight Sedge x
Ardneish Edwina,) purely as a companion,
but Peter was persuaded to take hirn to a
show and then he was hooked. Jake did well
in the ring and though not a top winner was
always well placed. Jake really came into his own when Peter decided to take hirn onto
the coursing field, Jake adored the coursing scene. Once he was on the hare he never
knew when to stop. He ran for rniles, always with Peter in hot pursuit. Peter would
nranaged to catch him and bring him backjust as he was needed back in slips
again. There is no wonder that Peter looks so fit! We shall all rniss dear old Jake on
the coursing field, he gave us so much entertaintnent. A lovely boy, who broLrght so
much pleasure.
Monica and Steve Cibbs, fiom the [J.S.A., have recently moved into Milton, a village
Shagiead x Dufault Dawn Rose. The hounds they have brought with thern are honre
Kassandra who is a multiple group winner, she is four and a half years old and very
much like Charm. The third is a very nice, fourteen rnonth old dog Jaraluv
Maxwell and definitely one to watch out fbr. This is a third stay in the tJ.K. for
Monica and Steve. They are signing up to becorne members of the Deerlround Club
and looking forward to conrpeting in this country, nraking their debut at'l'he llound
Club of East Anglia in November. Good luck to thern. Monica exerciscs her hounds
quite close to her horre on the banks of the river Carn. She is enioying the Ilritish
countryside. Monica tells me that she saw her first deerlround in Texas as a child and
had wanted one from then. When she was in tlris country, in 1993. thcy wcrc looking
to buy a German Shepherd and by mistake she dialled a wrong nunrbcr ancl couldn't
be no problem and is a great relief when I've spelt out the address very slowly and
carefuf ly to just about everyone in the world, or so it seems. It really is quite anazing
how many people, service providers, government bodies, banks, insurance companies
etc. etc. need to be notifled, the list seems never ending. The dogs were truly rnagnificent
on rernoval day and put up with everything we tlrrew at them. The day dawned
bright and clear and we all enjoyed our rnorning walk and they were then put in a srnall
secure enclosure with no possibility of anyone accidentally letting thern out. This
worked beautifully for about half an hour and then it stafted to rain and as you all
know Deerhounds can get absolutely soaked when out walking and running but left to
stand out in it ! oh no! they whined and whinged and looked as pathetic as only Deerhounds
can. lt really was not torrential just a little light interrn ittent drizzle wh ich became
absolutely unbearable after all of two nrinutes, we hurnans were not even wearing
coats. Plan B was to put some of tlrem in the car and some of therrr in the van this
seemed very acceptable to thern all, tlrey didn't even seem to rnind when we had to use
the vehicles and drive them to and fro between tlre new and old properties, anything
but get wet! Of course removals being what they are, never quite go to plan and our
removal van arrived at Preswylfa only to find that the existing owners renroval firm
getting on and there still seemed no prospect ofgetting the dogs out ol-their respective
A WATERY'I'AI,I,]
A few years back I looked after a neighbours cldcr ly l.atrlltlor ovcr tlrc New Year
holiday. Come Dec 3l I took the rather arthritic old lrourrtl orrl lirr its cvening
constitutional and as it was late walked around sornc rallrcr crpcnsivc lrousing which
surrounded the local RAF Quarters to see the valious Ncrv Ycars livc parties.
Various self styled "celebrities" lived in these dwellirrgs arrtl sorne cluite busy
celebrations were in full swing. One particularly large rnock ludor'/(iothic/Regency
style Wimpey construction had many expensive cars outsidc arrd a very enthusiastic
bash going on inside.
The house and environs were well lit which didn't really catclr rny attention
until a slight tug on the lead caused me to turn to see Angus raise his poft rear
undercarriage and direct a stream of lukewarm liquid straight at a floor mounted
lkW floodlight.
I watched the liquid make its way downwards and splash gently on the glass.
At this point there was an enormous blue flash and thunderous explosion. The lights
went out everywhere. Temporarily blinded I heard a shrill screeching from the
mechanism of the retractable dog lead followed by a smaller bang and bits of plastic
from the shredded casing hitting rne.
The nrusic was replaced by silence and then much swearing and sounds of breakage
from inside the (now dark) house so I felt it best if I made my way nonchalantly
away trying to hide what was left of the dog lead under my coat.
On my way out of the close I asked a passer-by if the had seen an aged Lab, they
said "No" but a dog they had assumed was a young whippet had passed therrr at
some considerable speed heading down the road. About half a mile away I found
Angus with his head firmly stuck in a privet hedge (the rest was sticking out, he
wasn't the brightest of dogs).
Dragging him out revealed one shivering but otherwise not noticeable harrned dog
except that any attempt to inspect his nether regions was met with that woebegone
look Labradors specialise in.
Never again in the several years he lived there could anyone persuade Angus to go
down that road again.
the dogs played with each other, ran through the watel and thcy all lrad a great time.
While the dogs were resting from their walk, we all had a srnall lunch. In the afternoon
there was a show for the young Deerhounds up to 24 rnontlrs of age. Mr.
Gerritsen, a Greyhound breeder and -judge for several breeds.judged the young dogs.
All the young Deerhounds got a report, and after each Deerhound he told the public
alound the ring what he thought about the dogs. He made it very clear that sonre
young dogs still had their.iunior faults. Everybody f-elt really pleased with his opinions,
his way of explaining the standard of the Deerhound, he compared it with the
standards ofother sighthound breeds. lt was very interesting to hear his ideas and
opinions. He also explained that younger dogs still have to glow and to develop the
things that they now are missing and pointed to all the good things he found in therl.
He also explained that even thoLrgh there were different type's of Deerhounds, some
stronger, sorne with lighter bone, some with lots of coat they still fitted part of the
standard and that it is very irnportant for the breed that they were there. If you need
t, News from Norway and Sweden
I arn sitting at my computer looking out over the
garden and the wonderfll autunrn coloLrrs that
gradually spread across Norway as the weather
gets cooler. The time has come to write a few
words about Deerhounds in oul part of the world
for the last newsletter of the year. The news fi'onr
Sweden is of course fronr the Swedish
breedshow at Tarnmsvik where Norma Sellers,
IJSA, was -iudging. The show took place on the
last weekerrd in July in the grounds of the
Tamnrsvik Hotel.
As usual the weather at Tarnmsvik was superb, in fact it was a bit foo hot. ln previous
years the Deerhounds and their owners have been rather spoilt witlr our showring by
large and leafy trees, so we could find shade when necessary. Wirh the ford a stone's
throw away it was easy to keep the dogs cool too. We also had the bar and caf'e just
beside us, but that I suppose is illelevant...This year, unfortunately, we had a ring in
the rniddle of the park with no trees in sight. The dogs were vtry hot and thirsty. so we
battled to keep them cool and well hydrated.
The results from Tarnmsvik can be found on the Swedish Deerhound Club's homepage
with pictures ofthe all class-winners and winners of the special breedshow
classes too. Best bitch was Jaraluv Karaoke, best dog was Aftdoc Allister. tJntypically
4 bitches were first in the final line-up.
t6.y, in June, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Western
rtrrtmsl Specialty and Western Sighthound Combined Specialties, in
, drrnra The shows are held in Lompoc in a beautiful park, and even the
.ern In the afternoons After the Regional Specialty, the West Coast Club
prnxled a superb ringside lunch, and we all sat around under the trees and
lo start my west coast show 'experience',
I was the substitute judge for the
grxxl quality Best in Sweeps went to a very sound, nice moving young male
While I was in California, an English friend of mine who lives about an hour or
so from the shows, came to stay the weekend with me in the hotel, and we
managed to squeeze in visits to some local wineries and to the Danish town of
Solvang. Solvang is a bit touristy, but we had a lovely day out; we shopped,
took photos, and of course drank some very nice California wines! lt was a
long flight to California from the Washington DC area, but well worth the trip
Nearer home: In September we travelled up to Finger Lakes Region of New
York State to attend the Wine Country circuit of shows (Anyone notice a trend
here??) | drove the motor home packed full of dogs, and Ned brought the minivan,
also full of dogs, and we set up camp in Romulus State Park where the
shows are held, right on the lure coursing field This is very handy for the
coursing on Saturday and Sunday but is a very long way from the rings, so it
took quite a bit of juggling to get up and down to the rings with several
Deerhounds, including two six month old pups who acted like mountain goats
on leashes, and several whippets At least we didn't have torrential rain like
last year, but maybe we will rethink our entries for next year. Anyway, on with
the results for these shows
