Dubai Education Council<br />
The creation of the new Dubai Education Council is an<br />
<strong>in</strong>dication of the commitment of the <strong>UAE</strong>’s vibrant busi-<br />
ness center to <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g IT <strong>in</strong>to education as the key to<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a successful economy, as well as recogni-<br />
tion of the need to modernise the education system. The<br />
council has been established by the decree of His High-<br />
ness Sheikh Mohammed b<strong>in</strong> Rashid Al Maktoum. The<br />
Council’s board, compris<strong>in</strong>g ten top educational and<br />
cultural figures, is entrusted with the task of devis<strong>in</strong>g<br />
an educational strategy that dovetails with the require-<br />
ments of <strong>UAE</strong> society and the IT era. The Council is to be<br />
funded through the allocation of 5% of the <strong>in</strong>come from<br />
the Palm and Jumeirah Residence projects <strong>in</strong> Dubai.<br />
Dubai Schools – Internationally<br />
Accredited<br />
Dubai Schools is a new <strong>in</strong>itiative by the Dubai Edu-<br />
cation Council that will focus on the development of<br />
branches of <strong>in</strong>ternational schools and new schools<br />
that meet the quality and accreditation standards<br />
of some of the best schools <strong>in</strong> the world.<br />
Dubai Knowledge Universities<br />

Dubai Knowledge Universities, a strategic <strong>in</strong>itiative of<br />
Dubai Knowledge Village provides a ready start-up<br />
campus, allow<strong>in</strong>g universities to <strong>in</strong>corporate themselves<br />
<strong>in</strong>to the market <strong>in</strong> their first few years of open<strong>in</strong>g with-<br />
out heavy <strong>in</strong>vestment of build<strong>in</strong>g their own <strong>in</strong>frastruc-<br />
ture.<br />

Dubai Academic City (DAC) is the next stage of devel-<br />
opment of Dubai Knowledge Village after its successful<br />
launch<strong>in</strong>g of Dubai Knowledge Universities, phase I & II.<br />
DAC will provide its universities to mature and construct<br />
their own campuses for a permanent presence <strong>in</strong> the<br />
region. DAC shall be situated on 150 million sq. feet area<br />
comprises student dormitories, sports stadium, accom-<br />
modation and other amenities. It is expected DAC shall<br />
house at least 25 universities with more than 36,000 stu-<br />
dents.<br />
University Licens<strong>in</strong>g: A university licence is issued to the<br />
branch of reputed and ranked <strong>in</strong>ternational universities/<br />
colleges or to universities/colleges accredited by the<br />
higher education authority <strong>in</strong> the <strong>UAE</strong>.<br />
Accreditation: A university licence is issued after deter-<br />
m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the rat<strong>in</strong>g of the program provided by the <strong>in</strong>sti-<br />
tution <strong>in</strong> its respective country. In addition the program<br />
must be accredited by a government body or an auton-<br />
omous body constituted by the federal government<br />
or an <strong>in</strong>dustry (<strong>in</strong>case of technical courses) or pro-<br />
fessional association (<strong>in</strong> case of professional courses).<br />
M<strong>in</strong>imum factors be<strong>in</strong>g considered while evaluat<strong>in</strong>g an<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitution are : curriculum, learn<strong>in</strong>g, student evaluation<br />
process, teach<strong>in</strong>g, research, learn<strong>in</strong>g resources, con-<br />
sultancy, <strong>in</strong>frastructure, student support, organization<br />
and management practices.<br />
University Classification: Universities conduct<strong>in</strong>g grad-<br />
uate and postgraduate education program are cate-<br />
gorized as: (1) Category–A: Up to 1000 student; (2)<br />
Category-B: Up to Apprx 3000 students and (3) Cate-<br />
gory-C: Above 5000 students.
