10. Winter Tyres
Why & When to use winter tyres?
Winter tyres have not been developed without a reason ! Winter tyres aren’t just for snow and ice!
Once the temperature drops below 7°C, winter tyres are more effective than equivalent summer tyres, on bad road
conditions (wet, snow, ice, …) but also in good conditions (dry). Indeed, they are optimized for low temperatures (thanks
to specific compounds) and bad road conditions (specific pattern design)
How to recognize a winter tyre?
The difference to summer tyres is actually visible: compared to summer profile, winter tyres have additional sipes,
which ensure a firm grip also under bad conditions like snow and ice.
Bridgestone winter tyres are marked with the “3 peak mountain symbol”, which is a guaranty for good snow performance.
“3 peak mountain” marking indicates that this tyre successfully
passed a standardized snow traction test and is
therefore usable for severe snow use.
“M+S” or “M&S” or “M/S” only indicates that this tyre has
improved performance on mud and snow compare to
standard tyres.
Therefore, a tyre marked ONLY with “M+S” is not a guaranty
of good snow performance
Different types of winter tyres
Winter tyres can be separated in 2 main categories:
- Mild winter conditions tyres: applicable for central Europe countries (France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland,
Italy…).
- Nordic conditions winter tyres: can be studless or studded, and applicable for Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden,
Finland, Baltic countries, Denmark, …)
What to use?
We recommend using the right tyres at the right time, to always ensure the best performance possible. The use of 4
tyres of the same type is a safety recommendation, as having different type of tyres fitted on your car (eg. Winter tyres
on front axle and summer tyre on rear axle) may lead to instability during cornering and braking situations.
Winter tyres are a safety investment.
