THE WOLVERINES IN OVERTIME<br />

Entering the <strong>2009</strong> season, Grove City owns a 4-3 all-time record in overtime. Below is a look back at those seven games.<br />

Game Summary<br />

Doug Steiner put Grove City up 6-0 in<br />

the second overtime with a one-yard<br />

touchdown run. But Wooster blocked the<br />

extra point and on the Scots’ ensuing<br />

possession, Jeff Elser tied the game by<br />

scoring from the 2. Will Schober’s extra<br />

point gave Wooster the win. Steiner ran<br />

for 102 yards.<br />

Game Summary<br />

Grove City overcame a 21-point deficit<br />

and the loss of All-American fullback R.J.<br />

Bowers to force overtime before falling<br />

to the Mules. Bowers finished with 172<br />

yards and two touchdowns before leaving<br />

with a broken ankle in the third quarter.<br />

Jake Dailey hauled in a touchdown<br />

pass while Aaron Kaiser’s 20-yard run tied<br />

the game at 28 in the fourth quarter. Ben<br />

Shreve’s 33-yard field goal in overtime<br />

put Grove City up 31-28.<br />

Game Summary<br />

One year after dropping the season finale<br />

to Muhlenberg in overtime, the Wolverines<br />

picked up their first overtime victory<br />

in the 1999 finale. After Muhlenberg<br />

erased Grove City’s 10-point lead, the<br />

Wolverines re-took the lead in the fourth<br />

quarter on Garret Schmidt’s 41-yard<br />

touchdown catch from Steve Lacinski.<br />

With the game tied at 24 in overtime, R.J.<br />

Bowers scored his second touchdown of<br />

the day on his school-record 46th carry<br />

of the afternoon. Brock McCullough’s deflection<br />

of a fourth-down pass sealed the<br />

win for Grove City.<br />

Game Summary<br />

Grove City needed an extra session to<br />

knock off Kenyon in the 2000 home<br />

opener. Mike Orlando gave Grove City<br />

the lead just two minutes into the game<br />

on a 15-yard run. But the Lords bounced<br />

back and maintained a 21-13 lead midway<br />

through the fourth quarter. Dan<br />

Roseum’s 43-yard interception return<br />

gave Grove City new life, however, and<br />

Orlando followed with his second scoring<br />

run of the day. In overtime, Kenyon<br />

won the toss but did not score on its<br />

possession. R.J. Bowers then bulled in from<br />

the 9 on Grove City’s fourth play.<br />

Waynesburg kept the Wolverines’ hopes<br />

for a third conference title in four years<br />

alive. Ben Shreve’s 40-yard field goal in<br />

the fourth overtime gave Grove City the<br />

lead for good while Jonathan Forbes’ block<br />

of a Waynesburg field goal attempt cemented<br />

the victory. R.J. Bowers ran for 266<br />

yards and three touchdowns, his NCAArecord<br />

32nd straight game with at least<br />

Fullback R.J. Bowers became college<br />

<strong>football</strong>’s all-time leading rusher with his<br />

128-yard outing. But it was his third<br />

touchdown run of the day, an 11-yard<br />

sprint in overtime, that gave Grove City<br />

its fourth overtime win in a nine-game<br />

span. The Wolverines trailed 14-7 in the<br />

fourth quarter before a Bowers score tied<br />

the game. Mike Orlando added 114 yards<br />

on just 16 carries for the Wolverines.<br />
