Diversity consultant to give presentations at UW-L
By: Lynette Prieur Lo
A leader on diversity and cultural
competency issues will give two presentations
on campus Monday, Feb. 16.
Eddie Moore, Jr., who founded
America & MOORE Research and Consulting
that specializes
in diversity consulting
for schools,
colleges and city
governments, will
lead the presentations.
Moore is also
the founder of the
National White Privilege
Conference.
His first presentation, “The Lessons
of Diversity: Personal and Institutional
Assessment and Action,” runs from
8:30–10:30 a.m. in Valhalla, Cartwright
Center-Gunning Addition. The interactive
session will examine and explore
issues related to diversity, privilege,
oppression and leadership across
America, especially in education. The
presentation will challenge participants
to examine their own behaviors and
belief systems, as well as inform them
how to take action against hatred, bigotry,
privilege and oppression. The
workshop is geared toward administrators,
faculty, staff and community members.
Getting in on the Conversations” from
Nelson Lauver to Speak at UW-L
Students Advocating Potential Ability
(SAPA) is proud to sponsor a presentation
by Nelson Lauver, The American
Storyteller. He’s a nationally syndicated
journalist, humorist, motivational
speaker and literacy advocate. He will
be talking about his experiences growing
up with a learning disability which
affects his ability to read. He will talk
By: Tom Link
If you are you interested in learning
more about disability issues or interested
in teaching others about disability
issues, then you might want to join Students
Advocating Potential Ability
(SAPA). In the past SAPA has sponsored
several events throughout the
school year and we hope to continue to
do so. However, in order to accomplish
our goals, we need students who are
about the strategies he uses to meet
those challenges and be successful in
his field.
Sounds dry and boring? Well, think
again. His presentation style is very
humorous and entertaining. For more
information about him and his presentation
you can go to: http://
www.theamericanstoryteller.com/.
His presentation will start at 7 pm in
Graff Main Hall Auditorium on Tuesday,
Looking for a group to join? Check out SAPA
interested in joining and contributing a
little time and effort to make these
events possible.
Any UW-L student, with or without a
disability, can join. For more information
check out SAPA’s web site at http://
www.uwlax.edu/sapa/. You can contact
Amanda Framberg, SAPA President
at framberg.aman@students.
uwlax.edu or contact me at
link.thom@uwlax.edu or at 785-8535.
You can also come to one of our meet-
7–8:30 p.m. in 260 Graff Main Hall
Auditorium. Using the White Privilege
Conference as a model, the interactive
session examines and explores the
topic of white privilege and oppression,
as well as the idea that those promoting
diversity must “get in on the conversations.”
Participants will gain a better
understanding of how privilege and oppression
associated with race can have
positive and negative impact on others,
individually and institutionally.
Both presentations are free and
open to the public. For more information,
Did you know that there are White
people in your movies?! Prepare yourself,
for this is the report that Hollywood
doesn't want you to see. This session
provides a structured forum for discussing
and analyzing the ways in which
Hollywood consistently glamorizes
White characters at the expense of consistently
marginalized minority characters.
Learn specifically how to identify
six primary character patterns occupied
by White characters, and explore the
reasons behind their creation and perpetuation.
We guarantee that after this
presentation, you will never see movies
the same way again!
Virtually all non-White characters in
mainstream movies fit within six recurring
character patterns, which we refer
to as archetypes. These archetypes
reflect and reinforce the marginalization
of minorities in Hollywood. While White
characters can also show behavior reflective
of six archetypes, the speakers
Frederick Gooding and Khalid Patterson
outline the six prototypes that glamorize
Whites and present them as
"raceless" (i.e., mainstream) characters
that appeal to all audiences. Armed with
this critical framework, we analyze contemporary
mainstream movies on an
ongoing basis. This is the report that
Hollywood doesn't want you to see. You
will never see movies the same way
again.
