Two in court for kidnapping

A landlady and her co-accused briefly
appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate's
Court on Monday in relation to a charge of
kidnapping.
Thandi Nkomo and Isaac Tshabalala were
arrested last month for allegedly kidnapping
Nkomo's tenant in an endeavour to solicit
cash from her husband.
It is alleged that Nkomo had conspired with
Tshabalala and another man from Johannesburg
to abduct her tenant.
Phalaborwa Police Spokesperson, Sergeant
Malesela Makgopa, said the men ransacked
the tenant's house before driving with her to
Johannesburg in her husband's car.
They apparently phoned the tenant's husband
and demanded money in exchange for
the release of his wife.
Tshabalala was arrested at a house in
Johannesburg by the Gauteng Intelligent
Unit.
Makgopa said they could not divulge how
exactly Nkomo is linked to the alleged crimes
since one man is still at large.
Nkomo, who is out on a R10 000 bail, was
told not to interfere with state witnesses and
must not leave Phalaborwa without informing
the investigating officer.
Tshabalala was denied bail and will remain
in custody. The case was postponed to January
16 for further investigations.
Fugitive escapes while under police guard

A fugitive escaped from the Maphutha Malatji
Hospital last week while under police
guard.
Kenny Mashiloane, who is facing a rape
charge, escaped from the male ward allegedly
by cutting through the padlock on his feet with
a hacksaw. It is alleged that Mashiloane's two
friends smuggled a hacksaw into the ward
during visiting hours without the police officer

Willie farewell
A prosecutor attached to Phalaborwa and
Hoedspruit Magistrate Courts, Willie Makwela,
has died.
Makwela sadly died on Saturday at Mankweng
Hospital after he collided with a car on
Friday night on his way to Mankweng Police
Station.

Mashiloane was admitted to the hospital
after he complained about body pains. He was
detained at Phalaborwa Police station.
Police have launched a manhunt for Mashiloane
and a departmental investigation
against the police officer.

Rape case postponed
Two men accused of accosting and raping
two Frans du Toit learners last year, appeared in
the Phalaborwa Regional Court on Monday.
Erick Shivambu and Jeffrey Mathebula allegedly
raped the two sisters on their way to
school near Impala Park stadium in May.
They allegedly took turns in raping them and
then robbed them of their cellphones.
The case was postponed to January for
trial.
Police arrest 17 suspects
Lulekani police arrested 17 people over the
past weekend for various criminal offences.
Eleven people were arrested for public drinking,
two for violating the road traffic act and
one for illegal gambling.
One person was arrested for housebreaking
and theft, one for assault with intent to cause
grievous bodily harm and one for failing to
appear in court.
Court denies bail to
alleged murderer

A man accused of murdering a local artist,
Paul van Vuuren, was denied bail in the
Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Lesley Mnisi Ubisi was arrested at his
homestead in Lulekani last Sunday after he was
found in possession of presumably stolen
goods belonging to van Vuuren.
His alleged accomplice from Seloane, is still
on the run.
It is alleged that van Vuuren opened a door of
his home for his killers two weeks ago after
which he was attacked.
A search was conducted for van Vuuren by
the Community Policing Forum after he was
last seen on October 17.
Police said van Vuuren's body was found
wrapped in plastic bag on a smallholding,
Dalmada, outside Polokwane.
It was reported that people on the smallholding
were alerted by a bad smell coming
from a trailer.
The body had already decomposed badly
when it was found.
Mnisi Ubisi and his accomplice allegedly
transported van Vuuren in his own trailer,
which was attached to his white Volkswagen
Golf.
Police arrest 38 suspects
Namakgale police arrested 38 people over
the past week for various criminal activities.
Twenty five people were arrested for public
drinking, two for violating the road traffic act
and one for intimidation.
Five people were arrested for housebreaking
and theft, two for assault with intent to cause
grievous bodily harm, one for violation of a
protection order, one for common robbery and
one for common assault.

Three people were arrested for fraud, two for
assault with intent to cause grievous bodily
harm and four for theft.
Six people were arrested

A local artist, Paul
van Vuuren, was
murdered two weeks

his accomplice from
Seloane. Van
Vuuren's body was
found dumped in a
trailer in Dalmada
outside Polokwane.
It is unclear why the
alleged killers drove
to Polokwane with
van Vuuren's body in
the trailer.
Van Vuuren was
laid to rest on Friday
at the Phalaborwa
Cemetery. Mnisi
Ubisi will appear in
court again on
November 30.
Police are appealing
to anyone with
information on the
whereabouts of Mnisi
Ubisi's alleged accomplice
to please
come forward. He is
out there driving van
Vuuren's white Volkswagen
Golf.
Van Vuuren was
well known in the Ba-Phalaborwa community
for his contributions with sound and music.
Others described him as a person that did not
see the racial differences in people but saw
everyone as the same.
