Gail urges residents
to pay accounts
RPA additional member, Gail van Barkenhuizen,
writes:
I want to urge residents of Ba-Phalaborwa
from townships to please pay their accounts for
services to the municipality. You no longer
have representatives on the Ba-Phalaborwa
Rate Payers Association committee.
The two members that were on the committee,
Joseph Makhubedu and Oulik
Mashego, stopped attending meetings knowing
well when our meetings took place.
They were well informed about the annual
general meeting and that according to our
constitution, a new committee was going to be
elected, but they did not attend.
Membership fees of R150 are due for this
year, and if it was not paid - you are no longer
a member of the Rate Payers Association. We
have to pay the Rate Payers Union and if there
is no money we cannot pay them.
Makhubedu and Mashego, who were on the
committee, misguided you all by informing
you not to pay the whole account.
This is not the Rate Payers policy to do so,
therefore we strongly advise you to pay what
you owe so that the municipality can do the
work you need done in the townships.
They cannot do so if you do not pay for the
services you receive. Just remember: Rome
was not built in a day, work with the municipality.
Toi-toi (protesting) won't get you
anywhere.
The municipality has now sent out letters in
Phalaborwa stating that if your account is not
paid, they are going to cut water and lights and
there is a R50 000 fine as well.
Not even the people of Phalaborwa can
afford that. This is also no way to try and get
rich quickly. These days, people are not made
of money. It is something that is very scarce.
So people please, remember that there is no
Namakgale Rate Payers Association, the only
one that is registered with the union is the Ba-
Phalaborwa Rate Payers Association.

Jordaan, writes about the diabetes pandemic:
November is International Diabetes month!
Diabetes is a disorder that affects the way our
body uses food for energy. Most of the food we
eat is turned into glucose, a form of sugar.
Glucose provides energy to our muscles and
other tissues, our bodies transport the glucose
in our blood.
For our muscles and other tissues to absorb
glucose from our blood, we need insulin.
Without insulin our bodies cannot obtain the
necessary energy from our food.
Insulin is made by the pancreas, which
contain B-cells that produce the hormone
insulin. When a person has diabetes, either
their pancreas does not produce enough insulin
or their body cannot use its own insulin
e f f e c t i v e l y.
This leads to the amount of glucose in the
blood increasing, this high level of blood
glucose is called hyperglycaemia.
There are two main types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes is generally caused by an
autoimmune reaction where the body's defence
system attacks the insulin-producing
cells.
The reason for this is not fully understood. In
the beginning the person with type 1 diabetes
may still produce a little insulin, but after what

diabetes can affect people at any age, but
usually occurs in children or young adults.
They should also follow a healthy meal plan
and enjoy regular exercise.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of
diabetes and accounts for 90-95% of all diabetic
cases.
It is most common in people older than 40
years who are overweight. However, because
of the increased obesity among the young, it is
becoming more common in children and
young adults.
The onset of type 2 diabetes is not as
dramatic as type 1 and is therefore often
diagnosed only when the person presents with
complications. The average time of diagnosis
is 7 years from the onset of abnormal glucose
pattern.
Only 50% of people with type 2 diabetes are
diagnosed. After diagnosis, initial therapy
centres on a foundation of lifestyle changes
such as exercise, healthy food choices, weight
loss etc. to which is added oral medication. As
this condition is progressive, in time insulin
therapy will need to be added.
As part of creating awareness around diabetes,
the Diabetes Leadership Forum Africa
was held in September in Johannesburg to

Daar sal pryse wees vir die beste ope divisie
man, beste senior man en beste dame, sowel as
'n algehele wenprys - met die voorgee stelsel
highlight the urgent need to address the burden
of diabetes.
Chairman of the World Diabetes Federation,
Prof. Pierre Lefebvre, warned that the current
diabetes pandemic has been described as a
tsunami.
The comparison is sound insofar as diabetes
also has devastating effects in terms of death
and disability. Unlike a tsunami however, it is
not sudden or unpredictable - and has been
slowly developing for half a century.
The wave is still growing and it's projected
that by 2030, in the region of 910 million
people worldwide - more than 15% of the
global adult population, will be living with
diabetes and impaired fasting glucose.
Health Minister, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, underscored
that in Africa, most cases remain
undetected, with the result that Africans die of
diabetes and other Non- Communicable Diseases
(NCD) at twice the rate of their counter
parts in the developed world.
"A particular challenge is that, when it comes
to diabetes and NCD's, we're not dealing
with an infectious agent that responds to
medication. Rather, we're dealing with a dangerous
and very complex organism called the
human being, which is highly resistant to the
need to change diet and lifestyle to meaningfully
impact on these conditions", said

Man gets life
for rape
A man accused of
raping his 15 year old
neighbour in Lulekani
last year will
spend his life behind
bars.
Patrick Nukeri was
sentenced to life imprisonment
on
Monday by the
Lulekani Regional
Court.
Nukeri accosted
and raped the minor
in a bush last year in
January while she
was playing outside
her house.
