Where Your
Electric Dollar
Goes
Most of the electricity we use on Kaua‘i is
generated by engines and turbines that burn fuel.
Buying that fuel is KIUC’s singlelargest expense.
Just like the fuel you buy for your car, the price
of fuel we buy changes every time we buy it. In
fact, it changes so much more often than any of
our other expenses that when the Hawai‘i Public
Utilities Commission set the rates KIUC charges for
electricity, it built in a monthly adjustment that
goes up and down with the price we pay for fuel,
for a given efficiency target.
